I would like to add a free flowing muffler to my car, however I have no idea what the sotck exhaust size is? Also is it neccesary to remove the resonator to increase flow? If some one could please get back to me on the stock size today, that would be great... Thanks in advance.. -Nate

The stock size is 2 1/4 I believe and removing the res will help you out

What are you planing to put on? What size engine do you have?

If your putting on a rice muffler though I'd say leaave the res on. I have a rice muffler but it doesn't sound like rice at all. Some people say it sounds like a Mustang. If you go with a Flowmaster muffler or a SLP or Bolra exhaust, they all would not need the res. They sound good on their own

Is the resonator b4 or after the cat?

BTW I have the 3400 and I am looking to purchase either a borla or flowmaster (ABSOLUTLY NO FART CANS), money is no real problem for me, but I would rather piece together my own custom setup.

resonater is after the cat. Deffinatly take it off. It's very restictive.

SLP owns..... u will not be disapointed if u go that route.. :)

Hmm I'm going to build my own exhaust system too.

But I tought it was 2" stock?

Well, I got under the car and tried to measure the stock piping, and to me, it looked more like 2" than 2 1/4", if that is the case... WHAT WAS GM THINKING. I mean really.

Stock pipe is 1 7/8 (I believe that is ID, not OD). I went to 2 1/2. Don't go any higher than that or you will lose too much back pressure.

I went 2.25" or 2.5" with a high flow resonator....increased flow soo much

Was that a bad thing? Did you notice a loss of low end power?

Did you replace anything cat forward (exhaust manifold/header to cat)? Because to me 2 1/2" cat back would be useless if it was only 1 7/8" before the cat.

The inside diameter of the factory downpipe is 2". I just measured it and can provide pictures if you'd like.

actually the smaller pipe from manifold to cat doesn't hurt and some have said with higher flow they loss power or only gained maybe a 1-2 hp.

i have noticed that the smaller pipe then dumping into the 2.5 actually works out great.

Thanks to everyone for all the quick replies, I will be ordering 2 1/2" piping to fab up a custom cat back system along with either a borla muffler or possibly a flowmaster 40/80 series... I will try to post some pics up when it all gets done, thanks again.

What do you want to know? I've had a Borla cat-back on my car for 3 of the 4 years I've owned it.

I love it. Very mellow and refined, yet aggressive when I open 'er up. Not at all ricey, but bear in mind, I have a V6; I'm not certain how it sounds on a 4. Fit and finish is excellent. It's expensive, but you get what you pay for.

Yeah, I noticed no loss of power, actually low end seems to be just the same if not more so. I get good power out of the system

thanx for the help, when I pay up my debts to my parents, and maybey after an intake manifold, i will definately be getting an exaust. And I think the borla will do fine with the 2.4l i4 engine, if its too ricey, Ill find somethin to do with it.

A few more questions:

is the SLP 2.5"?
has anyone had any problems with losing low end power in the 2.4 with SLP?
what muffler are you guys using that has a 2.5" inlet? All magnaflows have 2.25" except the 3" race series (at least that I can find)
Is the resonator not just a straight through core with perforations?
anyone bought the new pacesetter alero/grand am 2.4 header?

SLP pipes are 2.5" with the exception of the flange where it bolts up behind the cat....that's only 2.25".

For Magnaflow mufflers wih an inlet of 2.5", two choices are #14210 (my old setup that Oldsman has now) with a single outlet on the same end as the inlet, or #14266, which is a Camaro-style single-inlet, with dual 2.25" outlets. These are both in the Universal Stainless series.

Yes, Magnaflow resonators are straight-through with a perforated core.

i have a question since were all asking them--i just got a flowmaster 80 series for my alero 3400 i dont want it to be all of that loud, just throaty, should i take the res off or leave it?

well, SLP said that the exhaust is on back order for at least a month...lame
If it is 2.25" at the cat, does that mean that the stock exhaust is 2.25"? It looks like 2 to me, but I hope it's 2.25".
The resonator I was aking about is the stock one, not magnaflow. Is the stock one straight through?
Thanks for the magnaflow part numbers though, but I think I'm going to go for a muffler that has seperate ends for inlet and outlet.
