I need an exhaust that will give me some more hp, looks good, and doesnt sound like a beat up old chevy. This is my christmas present to myself so help me out. I wanna buy a good product but I dont wanna spend a whole lot and I don't want it to be loud and annoying...maybe quiet with a higher pitch noise than a lower pitch noise...i dont know...someone help me out.

Check out this thread: http://invision.aleromod.com/index.php?showtopic=285

One recommendation is the SLP exhaust, it does sound low but still raspy. This still might be too low and loud for you though. If so, then the flowmaster (as aleropimp1 recommended) should be a good fit.

You could always check out google search for "flowmaster sound clips" (http://www.google.ca/search?q=flowmaster+sound+clips&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&meta=) and listen to the exhausts that way.

I've never heard the SLP on a 4 cylinder, but on the 6, it doesn't sound raspy... it seriously sounds low and muscular... espcially once its broken in. I have heard the borla on the 4 cylinder, and it doesn't sound that great. It has the popping/backfiring sound and it is not loud enough.

Flowmaster would probably be too loud for you...

I would try out Dynamax or something like that.

Figured the SLP was too much, I thought flowmaster would be a better fit. I have the dynomax at home, got it from a friend and it sounded good on his 2.2 (shouldn't be much different sound than the 2.4). I think I'm going a different route with the exhaust so I'll sell it to ya if you like :)

SLP is raspy
Borla sounds good but a little quiet
Flowmaster and Dynomax sound very close to the same. which is not raspy, louder than Borla and has some what of a deep sound.

I know I'm gonna catch hell for this, but have any of you 4-cylinder owners ever considered an exhaust that was designed for a 4-cylinder? Mugen makes some of the sweetest sounding silencers I've ever heard......yes, they're made for Hondas, but I've never heard any 4-banger sound so ballsy.

johny_boy32
12-02-2003, 06:45 PM
first of all....lets see some pics...and second of all...Mugens huh...i will check into that but i still want quiet at idiling and ballsy when floored....?

matt......did i hear you say mugen? lol

maybe for a muffler it wouldnt be a bad idea, but there arent many full exhausts for us that sound good to be honest. No matter what we are gonna be a little raspy

there must have been something wrong with the exhaust I've had mine for almost 1.5 yrs and never had and problems with popping/backfiring. Springs said the borla sounded BETTER on the 2.4 than the 3.4 :P

my borla is quite at idle but gets quite loud at WOT, esp above about 3K, but then I have a few other things

The exhaust is more than just a muffler or silencers/resonators. The sound comes from a variety of factors like those but the ID of the various components, the flow rate of the gases, even the size of the tail pipe can play a factor. So just b/c a muffler was designed for a different disp. engine it may sound good on a different size engine (see posts above :D ) (i'll have to compare the sound between my 2.4L 4 banger and my inline 2.8L and see which sounds better  )

Also the difference between main difference btwn hondas and aleros is engine size which can be compensated for by a variety of things but your comparing a 1.6/1.8L engine to a 2.4? guess which flows more gases? Unless a FULL exhaust is designed for a GM 2.4L application you could have just as good, if not better, luck mixing and matching parts, for less $$

A VTEC 1.8L Honda with high-lift cams at 7800rpms is probably flowing more air than the 2.4L

There are dozens of things that affect the sound of an engine including displacement, # of cylinders, # of valves (4-valve DOHC V6s sound good, but, IMO, most 2-valve OHV V6s sound poopty, a stock GM 3.8L being the worst ever.), size of exhaust manifold/piping & muffler, and size/type of intake manifold

But that's not the point...

If you want the best-flowing exhaust and it's naturally aspirated, get 2.5" piping and the longest free-flowing perforated-style muffler you can get to help kill the sound..

its not sagging theres just no room to move it up any higher thats as high as it will go theres a bunch of braces above it for the bumper so thats about as good as it will fit

Get the Borla exhaust now before they stop selling it. I also heard it's better on the 2.4 than the 3.4 I have the 3.4
:D I have some crappy Ractive fiberglass pack muffler right now, but I going with a flowmaster 40 soon (I have it right now). My exhaust is all custom. I have a Random Tech. cat. and Ractive chrome tips. I also had the bumper cut out for a secnod set of tips at a body shop. It's pretty cool because it looks stock. I've even had the dealer (which you know they hate mods) say it looked good

An intake will also help with the sound.
