Filter, in prospective views, can and most likely will be more important than the oil itself, look at it this way
filter lets a particle by
particle gets lodged in rod or main bearing
digs in, makes two particulates, those make four, those make eight
those make sixteen, those make thirty two
those make sixty four, those make one twenty eight.........and so on
use a better filter

^^ yup since I bought my beater, I dont drive the alero, its been sitting for a while, I drive it around here and there, checked the oil last month and looks brand new. Once i get the car up and running then i will change that too, its on my list....serpintine belt was replaced at the same time and need new one, brakes are about rusted thru and rust is back on the quarter panel. Once i get the money for the interior/paint work, I will be taking care of all that. Sad part is my engine is probably still in better shape then most the 3400's on here

Mileage?
i have a 3400, had Severe Coolant into oil issues, when i bought it
147K then
171K now
155PSI Comp across all 6
28MPG
Will start in 0* weather, and 100* weather, never heats over, runs strong, breaks the tires loose on every attempt, no noises (except tappets..) a great car.... i think i need the LIMG done again though...
does not use any fluids, does not leak any fluids....i <3 my 3400

Mileage on mine is just over 140k, and all but 5 miles were put on by me ORIGINAL OWNER. I know every place that car has been, never ragged, neutral dropped anything. LIMG replaced 2 or 3 times (dont remember, but have every single reciept invoice and documentation including tire rotations and oil changes from 5/19/1999 through the passing emmisions report from Tuesday) upper IMG replaced once. Never any collant leaking into oil, no leaks......except for absess after any changes. Just a lil old and needs some maintenence, but I am waiting on that, since if i do it now, its just gonna be wasted ie new serp belt will crack again by the time I am ready to show it again.

people who go solely on mileage should know that oil still breaks down when not in use, at the absolute min of barely any driving it should be every year to be safe, if longer and the oil gets a chance to break down, it will actually eat away at your seals instead of protect them.
i use mobil clean 5000 mile oil. change it every 3k, nice and clean every change.
PF46 filter, acd is just as good or better than the advertised performance ones.

Everyone seems to like to throw the blingiest rims they can find on their cars for the sake of being a "show car." A lot of show cars don't use chrome and stick with the clean aggressive look.
This guy can take his car to shows, or the track..

DansGen1Alero
11-05-2009, 03:37 PM
yea but points could be deducted off non attractive looking rims (all based on judges preference) Most shows are for bling pretty, and out of ordinary. the street cars which want the lightest possible would go with the others since looks are not important.
and yes I know oil still breaks down over time regardless of mileage.

First true synthetic available to the public and constantly improved since then... maybe not the 'best' but very reliable and does the job. I buy the big jugs anytime I see them on sale no matter what viscosity cause I have kids/friends who rely on me as their first-aid mechanic. All of them comment on the 'expensive oil' I let them have and they've all told me their vehicles seemed happier ever since. Not scientific I know but the stuff just plain works.
No, I don't work for Mobil - hee hee

11-06-2009, 11:17 PM
usually valvoline, but castrol is on sale right now, so that's what sheeba got. 5W-30.
questions... for you guys talking about using thicker oil, is that something to do when the mileage gets higher? sheeba's coming onto 130,000, and i feel like her lifter noise may be getting louder... i didn't know if using a thicker oil would be easier on the car?
also, i've always heard not to go from conventional - synthetic, but i've always wanted to run synthetic. is it really a big deal to go from one to the other when changing the oil? note: not saying mixing them for topping off, i mean complete oil change?
NOOB
DansGen1Alero
11-06-2009, 11:21 PM
you can go conventional to synthetic, I did on my other car, you just dont want to go reverse....synthetic to conventional.
I dont know much about consistancy, but I am using a high mileage in mine now. (140k)

Mobil 1 15W-50 is rated as the best oil to use in a turbocharged engine. It can withstand the heat.
Mobil 1 15W-50 is formulated with SuperSyn, an extra-high viscosity synthetic fluid, plus extra anti-wear additive to provide extra protection for severe service applications such as towing, hauling and racing. Mobil 1 15W-50 is recommended for high performance vehicles including turbocharged and supercharged engines where a thicker oil film is desired.

Alerogirl,
The reason they say its not a good idea to go from conventional to synthetic at high mileage is because it tends to clean the gunk that have incaked the seals over time. What this means for you, is after a short period of time, you may develope an oil leak through those seals.
TheEdgeofSanity
11-07-2009, 07:31 PM
lol, i must say that my one friend has a 2004 Chevrolet Venture with the 3400 and all he runs in it is Super Tech oil and oil filter from walmart and it seems to be fine. Van is at 178,000 and it runs like new.

Question for y'all. I have 270,000Km on my 3400 Alero. I am pretty sure it's used good old dinosaur oil its entire life. Would it be bad to switch to straight synthetic now? There shouldn't be any ill affects from switching to synthetic aside from possibly some gunk being removed that's sealing a leak or two, but I doubt even that.
What you will gain this time of the year is some better cold starting because the oil flows better, especially if it gets really cold up in your area.
