I bought that Alero I posted a link to in my other thread today. A 2003 Olds Alero 5-speed with the Ecotec. It has 98xxx miles on it, only 1 previous owner, all for the price of $3300 lol. Great way to start off the year if you ask me, anyways here are some pics. The Malibu will be up for sale soon.

Going to pick a newer version Hayne's Manual (the one I have only covers thru 2000 lol), and change my oil tomorrow.

Here's a pic of the engine bay, haven't done anything to it yet. Took some time today to look the whole car over to see if anything needs to be replaced, come to find out someone cut the wires to the horn, and the high tone horn is shot. I guess I should have tested the horn when I bought it lol. The driver's side window doesn't roll up and down that easy, seems to slip, so that's got to be fixed, other than that its all good.

UPDATE: So the Malibu got sold yesterday, and I've been enjoying the Alero a lot. It's really a great car, other than the horn and domelight not working right lol. The Getrag trans. is ok, not the smoothest, but you get used to it quick. Also been enjoying the factory XM radio, which will expire end of this month, unless I renew it.
Going to wash the car this weekend and give it a nice wax hopefully. Oh yeah, I cleared my corners this past weekend.:p

I might actually go with 17's also, I don't know yet, depends what I come across.
Anyways got some more stuff in today. I will be getting a 2.5" cat-back very soon, which will consist of two magnaflow mufflers, one in the stock resonators location and the other at the end of course. I've already bought an oval tip to finish it off.
Also got my valve cover in from heineck today, which I will take my time prepping and painting it. This way I will still have my car, and don't have to rush the valve cover.

I leaning more and more towards 17's, anyways I found four 17's for a grand total of $4.01 at $0.94 each. Discount Tire effed up, here's a link. I should place an order and see what happens lol.

Did a test fit today on one side. The rims won't go on until Spring, because it definitely needs the Eibach's to get rid of some gap, plus I'll get new tires then too, this will hopefully give me a better idea what size tire I will go with. Feel free to comment...

Got an estimate for a mandrel bent exhaust yesterday from Hanksville Hot Rods, Inc in Littleton CO. I told them that I have all the parts already (muffler, tip, etc) and that I just needed the custom bends and the install.
So they gave me an estimate of $400, which isn't bad all considering they bend it out of one piece in house, instead of welding a bunch of various bends together.
So that's my plans for beginning of Spring, as soon as it warms. Just thought I share lol.

Update: Hanksville will be installing my custom mandrel bent cat-back in April, since they are currently busy with numerous roll cage projects.
This will cost twice as much, but it will be mandrel bends instead of crush bends, and they did seem a lot more professional than your average muffler shops. I also went to the same shop that did my 2.5" crush bent setup on my Malibu last year, but the guy that used to work there left, so the tards that work there now, told me some BS about 2.5" not fitting and rattling, so I left as fast as I could lol.
On a side note, I got pulled over today by the Fort Collins Police (old ass cop on a motorcycle, same guy that used to stalk my high school parking lot, waiting to pull kids over), he pulled me over for going 78 in a 75 on I-25, and "tailgating" him, I was like 4 car lengths behind him, and he said I should be 8 car lengths behind (1 car length for every 10mph). He let me go with a "warning", figures.

Guess I'll have an extra, I didn't expect to buy this kit, originally was going to piece it all together.
The instructions that come with the kit (on a CD) are much more in depth, so this will be a cake walk. Sad thing is, I won't install it until at least August... Also need to get parts for a heat exchanger...

But that install should be routine for Hank, I think he mapped out the SLP when he took it off my car to install the custom stuff. Have you already been over to his shop?

Yeah, too bad there's no time to do before and after scans with HPTuners, that would be interesting, but you'll pick up a few more horses for sure. If you feel like dropping by send a pm, I'm not far from I25 off 92nd. "The beast" is up and running, but got some drivability issues. Nothing wrong at WOT, though.
I don't think it would get stranded :p

So I got the magnaflows installed today at Hanksville, he did a really good job. I'm very satisfied.
I will post up pics and a video tomorrow since its dark out here. Hank took some pictures on the lift that he will e-mail to me that I will also post up.
Also stopped by Greg's (AleroB888) today after the install, and want to thank him again for showing me his Alero and taking me for a spin in it, he really put a lot of effort into it and it shows...
Just a picture for proof lol and a little glimpse of my muffler and tip...

I have to say, I'm more impressed with your car, that 5-speed really hauls! I wish I could have bought that car . And the tune even looks great, as far as I was able to read it, fuel trims almost perfect, and locking at zero at WOT.
Makes me want to buy wheels...

Reading that data off of HP Tuners for my car was really interesting to look at, this will give me something to compare to once I get the S/C kit installed and tuned.

They can replicate the bends, they usually keep them on file. Then in the computer and whamo bamo, in house computerized mandrel bender does the work, Hanksville is really a quality business....

Here's the response I received from him...
I do not have the bends programmed. I couId do this, but the tight fitment over the rear crossmember/axle would be difficult to replicate accurately each time. I’ll give it some thought and see if I can come up with a solution. Thank you.

Another update....
The initial bends, before the rear axle, would be straightforward. The last two bends, just above the axle and just before the muffler, would be require custom fitment and welding since the angle and position of those bends will vary depending on the type of muffler used. We could provide those bends in a kit, but it would not be a direct bolt-in as fitting/trimming and welding would be required in that area.

I understand what he says. I wouldnt expect to be bolt in, I was expecting to be some welding obviously and maybe some cutting at the end. The bend right on top of the axle wouldnt be a problem if we keep the same style muffler you got which is offset (IN) center (out) correct, if anything at the last bend right before the muffler maybe they can leave some few more inches on pipe cause it depends how long is the muffler. But again im not a muffler guy.
Btw thats a pretty clean install and looks good. Im happy and its not even my car lol... just missing the header down and before cat but im sure you getting that cover at later point.
Thanks for taking your time to get in contact with him.

Well the supercharger kit is gone, sold it about a week ago... :( At least I got most of my money back out of it.
I'll still do some mods to the Alero, but nothing major. Need it as a daily driver and don't want to take any chances, I was originally going to buy a beater to DD, but plans have changed.
I'm also considering selling it. Anybody looking for a 5-speed/Ecotec combo??? Looking to get $3400 for it (won't be sold with the 17" OZ Racing wheels though) Exhaust install pictures should give you an idea of what condition it's in lol ... just throwing it out there.

I dont want to hear that excuse now lol... my car its Daily driving, snow driven and all with a not so good tune, and it had 113k right now. You have way lower miles and you were planning on having the car TUNE so it would of been perfect. In another note the GM reflash got unlocked by trifecta, so will be having a better start off base tune.
I bet you got your are eyes set to another car, so spill it out..

If you seriously put it up for sale, I would probably wind up buying it, although I really shouldn't. Nothing bad has happened to it since I last saw it, right?
I think you should hang on to it for a while, even if you don't mod it further, but it would be a shame to let that new exhaust go to waste.
Malibu369258

It will most likely go up for sale after ASS '10, the car is still the same since you saw it, last mod being the exhaust...
Only thing is, it won't be sold with the 17 inch rims, that'll be extra. Don't know how much I'll add if someone does want them.
Would be nice to have a fellow Aleromod member make the Ecotec/5-speed combo reach its full potential...

Now, take it to Bandimere this Sunday for the Street Tuner event.... Ya gotta time it at least once, even though you'll lose a full second of E.T. at that track.

06-05-2010, 12:10 PM
Well I thought about it some more last night, and will definitely keep it until I graduate from school, which will be in 2 years or so... Then after that if I can keep two vehicles I might even drop a built motor in.
Even if I were to sell the Alero, I would only buy a vehicle in the same price range, maybe $5000 tops, which didn't make sense at all. Seeing that I would have to put up with another used vehicle which I have no idea how the previous owner treated it.... Plus I was looking over the pros again over my Alero.
(1) It's just shy under 60,000 miles on the engine
(2) The trans and body only have 105,000 miles (glad I don't have an automatic)
(3) Previous owner had a new clutch installed at 9X,000 miles (Poor guy paid $2,000 at the dealer for the install)
(4) I only paid $3300 for a clean '03 5-speed
Sure it has a few cons that still need to be fixed, but its nothing major, such as having no horn or a domelight that stays on after the doors are closed
Now, I would definitely like to boost it, because N/A mods on the Ecotec are pretty much useless.
So I've been thinking of getting another supercharger kit towards Fall '10, or even look at a custom turbo setup (everyone here has their opinions of s/c or t/c). If I go with a turbocharger, I would like to talk to a few shops in the area that could get me a setup installed.
My goal is at least 210whp
Therefore, I wanted to know if anyone knew any shops that they could recommend in the Denver area or Colorado that I could discuss with about this matter.
Vic28
06-05-2010, 05:42 PM
Im glad to read this... Anywayz for that whp your shooting you can easily do that with the M62, for its simplicity of installation thats what I would recommend. Turbo charger is what im sure everyone loves including me, but if you are gonna have to pay a shop to do a custom job im sure thats gonna cost ya a big chunk.
