View Full Version : Sway bar group buy?
bentiac

Anyone interested in a 3rd Speedbuilt group buy? I missed the 1st and the 2nd group buy and wonder if there is anyone else out there who would want this? If so I'll contact them and also get some GA owners to join in.
If not .... someone please sell me their rear sway bar... if you are not autocrossing or going to the track you probably don't need it :p

Last group buy was $144 for 1 and $288 for 2. I'll email PFYC and MP racing now to see if they are willing to do it.

01-04-2010, 04:34 PM
They are going to want all of it up front before they do anything. They got hosed the last time because of non payment. You will need 20 orders for each bar and a way to hold everyone's cash since they will want a lump payment when they place the order. It's not gonna happen. Ill sell you mine for $500. lol.
bentiac
01-04-2010, 04:36 PM
That sounds impossible now :D.
Just saw a picture of them... are the front and rear exactly the same shape and size except for the thickness? Anyone who has both should know.
alerored04

I don't think they are. You could check with your stock front and hold it up to the rear and see.

Okay good news... Mark from MP is willing to help if we can get enough people interested. Please post here if you are interested and I will post this on the GA forum too:
I would be glad to help with this however my main interest is to make it
so that there will be bars available for the whole community as a result
of a group buy. We have already talked to Addco and they dont have the
ability to make such for us. They did give us contact info for Eibach,
Hotchkis and a few other potential manufacturers. As for having
Speedbuilt make them... this seems near impossible due to the only
contact for them being PFYC and PFYC already told us the only way they
would do it is if we have 20 of each paid for up front. Addco was going
to just make 10 of each at their own cost and sell them through us (MP
Racing) but obviously that did not work out due to them not being able
to work out the bends properly with their equipment.
If you can drum up enough interest in this (10-15 people with money in
hand) I will gladly start making contact with the afore mentioned
companies and see what we can work out.
Please keep me up to date about this and I will do everything possible
to make this happen.

from my previous research expect cost on 1 bar to be anywhere from 125-200 depending on the manufacturer and how quick they think they will be able to sell them..
in order to get a price set in stone we are going to need prospective manufacturers see that we (the Nbody community) have a real need and want for these bars and that they wont be wasting their time in having them made.

lvemy3100

I am sure it cant hurt to ask... however I would say the chances arent that great considering how our luck has been so far with just getting the standard oversized bars made.
I certainly will look into it though ;)

Yea s&s ripped off everyone and closed shop and I am paying them all back out of my own pocket. So how was I or anyone else supposed to know what s&s was going to do? Also how is that my fault?
I have been serving this community for over 5 years now and the only issue to date is the ordeal with s&s. I dont recall you doing anything for the community in that time so as far as I'm concerned if you don't want in on this then that is your problem.

What kind of sizes are we looking at? Lager bar = better handeling ftw
bentiac
01-06-2010, 12:26 PM
Well larger bar does not always = better handling on our cars as you probably want some independence side to side. The speedbuilt I believe was 28.6 F and 22.4 R... I would be happier with a thicker R like 29 F and 24R.
Also let's not bring up past blames as Mark is trying to help us get this done.
Could anyone post this on the grandamgt forum as it seems like their admin is ignoring my activation.

If anyone has a problem with Mark/MPRacing or anyone else acting as an intermediary, I will gladly volunteer my services.
There are many people here who I'm sure will vouch for my trustworthiness and character.
The Speedbuilt bars were 28.6mm F (1.125") and 22.2mm R (7/8"). The car is very neutral with both bars, and I'm happy to give "Oh, snot!" rides when the weather warms up here in northern IL.
lord2heart
01-06-2010, 04:47 PM
question, what do you mean when it gives the car a neutral handling? does it mean whether it gives it more of an over-steer or under-steer?
bentiac
01-06-2010, 05:33 PM
He means it almost neither oversteers or understeers but it depends on your input too... I prefer a little oversteer... A FWD car with a loose ass is always fun.

We need to:
1) Get more people show interest on the GrandAM side
2) Decide who the middle man would be. I'm fine with MP racing doing this but some people seem to be unhappy.
3) Send the orders and be patient.
If this doesn't take off, I'll either buy a 3 piece swaybar (less likely) or order through a custom sway bar builder I found. You send them the OEM sway bars and $200 and wait for 6 month ... they'll send you back a thicker version... I've seen a few pics of their work and it looks good.

Well they apparently are working on this with a quickness as they already got back to me. Looks like we are going to need to get a group buy going. They are asking for a minimum order of 25 of each bar.
Bars will be 28.6mm (solid) Front and 22.2mm Rear (solid).
I will post pricing as soon as they can get it to me.

As far as I am concerned, they were responsible for marketing the only swaybars for this platform that I'd ever recommend (I have had two different sets over the years, and one set is still installed on my car). I have no idea who their manufacturing partner is.

I asked matt to be intermediary yesterday since nothing happened at the last time and i will buy a few sets too just to make this happen also .
If this does happen there will be strict guidelines
and a 100 percent chance you will pay up front and wait For those of you who want cheap i dont think it will happen without a larger number of sets being made , so a smaller run WILL be more expensive per unit
Also i seriously doubt you would be able to buy just one front or one rear So lets make this easy and make it SETS

Here is today's reply from Brian @ PFYC:
Hi Matthew:
If the company who made them is even still willing to do it, the last time we checked several years ago they required an order of 25 bars in order to do it. We'd probably not be willing to even attempt it unless we got a full 25 pre-paid (in full, non cancellable) orders. I wouldn't think that'd be easy these days.
And my response:
Brian:
Would you be willing to either contact the manafacturer or provide a contact name/number for me to directly contact them?
I understand that for the project to be worth their while, they would require a substantial committment.
I guess the first step is to find out if they'd even do it.
Kindly let me know.

Well someone should post up on www.grandamgt.com, http://www.gaownersclub.com/ and the malibu sites to get more then just us.
Also on a side note, how will we be pre-ordering? I assume when we have enough guys with cash in hand, the guys from PFYC will have a swaybar pre-order purchase set up in their store correct? I've never done a group buy so I don't really know what to expect lol.
Edit: Maybe there should be some sort of poll made for people who are in on this so that it's easier to keep track rather than having of a list of people that has to be constantly updated. That way it would be more organized. Just a thought.
tw0123
12-01-2011, 10:28 PM
Also i seriously doubt you would be able to buy just one front or one rear So lets make this easy and make it SETS
I understand your point on this, however I do know that some people have been able to get one or the other and just need the complimentary bar... I have a rear, and need a front, Bentiac, who started this thread, has a front and needs a rear... so between the 2 of us, that would make a complete set... I think if you rule us out because we only need 1 bar is highly unfair and will hold out on a set being spoken and paid for especially when it is a minimum of 25 of EACH bar, not 25 sets... so if you can guarantee one or the other, why hold that against the people who are willing to commit and pay for the bar they need?
adrian13
12-02-2011, 03:11 AM
I'm willing to give this another try. I'm in only for the rear swaybar. I had purchased the last front swaybar through PFYC a few years ago. The company that they had went through is speedbuilt.
How this worked (not really) last time with the group buy was that everyone gave their money to Mark of MP Racing and he held the money insisting that Eibach was going to make the swaybar for the N-body. Through a few months of not enough serious buyers he gave money back or accepted store credit. I think that we should give maybe PFYC the money (if they're willing) and have them get the savings/transactions going.

I don't know yet how any of this is going to work, but the first thing to do is see if the manfacturer will accept the project. Then if we have a positive response, I will work out the details on how payment with be made with the vendor (be it through PFYC or directly to the manufacturer).
I will not be posting on other forums until we get a positive response from the manufacturer.

I think that if the manufacturer and the vendor gives us a go, we ae going to put a fairly strict time limit on this - I will not let this string out over 6 months. If people want in, they'll have to pony up quick. It isn't fair to anyone to take a month to get all the orders and funding together.

Racing/Ricing season is over so things are slow for this type of business and they would be more receptive to small runs when they have more time And with more time we will get a superior product Also theses things dont start right away this is the lead time ( usually 30 to 60 days) needed to "get in line " for a small run
WE have a alot better chance now than we would in april to september
thats why i waited

Fair enough, never really thought about the "off season" factor... It makes perfect sense to get in the odd parts for a smaller production run when they are not as busy doing the mainstream stuff... Also the timeline of 30-60 days should give people enough time to plan... If you cant save $200/bar then, hope someone can buy some extra's lol... I know it will be tight even for me, but I hope to be able to get 1 bar... I also know being a Canadian, it will be closer to $350 with the extra shipping and duties we suffer from...

...I have a rear, and need a front, Bentiac, who started this thread, has a front and needs a rear... so between the 2 of us, that would make a complete set....
Thats why he only wants a front only.

YES....as said in the posts before you....this is one of the best/most noticeable mods you can do to our cars. The stock sway bars SUCK....and they bend/twist easy.....these new ones are a lot stiffer and will help with "sway" while turning.
We need everyone we can get....BUT if you say your in....PLEASE stick with it.....dont back out last second....cause there are a lot of people depending on you to buy that set....every person counts.
Also....i though maybe if we couldnt get a CRAZY amount of people....would the people that want the bars be willing to pay a little more? so we can get this done....if this doesnt get done i will be looking elsewhere for some custom sway bars. Words cant describe how bad i want a set!

Email from Brian @ PFYC today:
Matt, we've got the information and are still evaluating what to do with it.
If we do decide to take a shot at doing another run, we would end up needing a 50% deposit on at least 20 bars (or sets - we could do front only, rear only, or both but it would have to be 20 of each bar) to get it going. Do you think this is even a possibility from what you've seen?
I'll let you know when I know more.
And my response:
Brian:
I'm fairly confident that we could get together orders for 20 rear bars; especially if we advertise on other message boards. 20 front bars may be a bit of a stretch, but we'll see.
On the Alero message board alone, we have nearly a dozen people who would want in. Some have even suggested buying multiple bars to ensure that we meet a minimum order requirement, so there is a degree of committment here.

I hope you guys can pull this off. Bars are a sweet upgrade, and I agree, installing them is no fun at all. Having to remove the torque mount at the back of the enging is a dam mess. Then, if you have headers, you are really up shits creek as you will have to remove the rear one to gain access to the bolt that goes through the torque mount. I spent 3 seventeen hour days installing full suspension kits on both my 2000 and my 99.... never again.... lol
Here is a pic taken close to the end of day two.... Im on the left, my brother-in-law on the right. Don't we look happy? Im working at taking the stub shaft apart in this one

Good morning Brian:
As with wildfire, the word that we are trying to get a run of anti-roll bars produced is spreading. Now that we have shared the potential with a few other message boards, we are looking at 19-20 front in addition to 19-20 rear bars, not counting members who have suggested they would buy multiple sets if needed. So I think we might be good on meeting the manufacturer's quantity request.
Kindly let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

The last group buy attempted was to be for Eibach swaybars at $185 per bar + shipping: http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=127800 (info at the bottom of post #1).
The previous successful group buy in 2008 through PFYC was for the Speedbuilt swaybars, and the cost for those was actually less at $139 per bar (not sure about shipping, but probably not included): http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=87968.

I agree the $139 price is better, but at the same time, that was 3 years ago, the market has completely changed, inflation has gone up, as have so many other factors... I still say be prepared for $200 + shipping, and this should give everyone a good buffer to play with to ensure our numbers do not drop when they announce the final price... this of course is providing they will even make them for us this time....

Dont go and buy OSV wheels.....honestly i dont think you will go through with this buy....your already looking at spending money on wheels that need A LOT of work.....and he wont even take your offer.....jeeeeeez

Black_Mamba... this was back on page 9... I know you don't want to read the entire thread, but it does have some important information... such as this...
We are estimating $200 per bar + shipping to be safe and guarantee people can get the bars... so plan on $400 + shipping and you should be safe...

OKAY GANG......I HOPE EVERYONE HAS THEIR FUNDING LINED UP BECAUSE WE ARE ON A DEADLINE HERE IF WE WANT THIS TO GO THROUGH.
From Brian @ PFYC:
Hi Matt:
Here's what we'd like to propose:
Pricing is same as before, $279.99 for a combo Front and Rear set. Shipping will be a flat rate $20 to anywhere in the lower 48 states. Canadian orders will ship for flat rate of $35 via UPS, but Canadians also need to be aware of UPS taxes, duties and brokerage fees that they'll be responsible for that are collected upon delivery by the UPS driver.
To get started, we'd set up a deposit page. The deposit is $150.00 and is NON REFUNDABLE unless we fail to get the required number of deposits which is a total of 20. If we fail to get 20 deposits, refunds will be done minus 5% (or $142.50). If someone with a deposit changes their mind, it is up to them to find a person to take their spot. Once an agreement has been made for the person to take their spot, we'd refund $142.50 to the original person immediately after the replacement person pays the $150 deposit to us directly (this MUST be arranged beforehand). If someone with a deposit changes their mind AFTER the bars have been made and are on their way to us from the manufacturer, that person's deposit will be refunded in the amount of $142.50 AFTER the replacement person has paid for the set IN FULL.
PFYC is required to order a minimum of 25 sets. Once we have 20 deposits on hand though, we'll place the order with the manufacturer. We must have the 20 deposits on hand by Jan 31, 2012. If the 20 deposits are on hand prior to Jan 31, 2012, we'll place the order for production. Production time has been quoted to us as 4-6 weeks. We have no control over that number though and I believe the later into spring this might go, the longer that quote might stretch, that's why I think having the order in by Jan 31, 2012 is the necessary. If the January 31st date does not work out, it is flexible by a couple of weeks if we've received 14 deposits by then and the majority of the group would like to extend it. This can be determined by using PFYC's Facebook page where we'll post a poll if required.
Once the bars have been shipped to us, we'll start collecting the balance due which will be $129.99 plus applicable shipping. Transit time from the manufacturer to our warehouse is about one week. Anyone with a deposit must pay their balance within 2 weeks of the time we ask balances to be paid.
Sorry for all the specific terms but we're trying to answer the "what ifs" that are likely to come up so that everyone knows up front what they are agreeing to.

How long till they are ready to buy. i have to replace all of the struts and springss ( i am getting some GR2s and sprint springs , and both front wheel bearings. If i get everything fixed i might be interested in a set if everything is fixed when the deposit is due. If i have the 150 bucks could he hold the sway bars till i have the rest of the money.

I don't know who exactly the manufacturing partner is, but they are/will be Speedbuilt bars, which is PFYC's private label brand.
The minimum ordering requirement from PFYC was 20 bars of each type - that means if any rear bars were to be made, we must order at least 20. Likewise for front bars; to get any made requires an order of at least 20.
My understanding is that in addition to full sets, individual bars will also be available.
More details will come when the deposit page is up.

We could do either Buffalo, or Windsor... Ross and Ryan are down that way, they might have some cross border buddies that would help out!!! I am not sure if there is anyone close enough to Buffalo... Or Possibly Guiguilandry down in Quebec... maybe someone close in Ganagoque?(sp) might be able to receive delivery and then cross over with them from there...
Any Canadians have any ideas??

ok... I am confused... I might be able to buy a full set if I can wait until just before delivery (estimated 7 weeks- 4-6 for manufacture, 1 week transit to PFYC) but the details are not clear...
You have the option to pay the $150 deposit now, and the remainder before January 31, 2012 or you may pay the entire amount now
Once we've confirmed the bars are on the way to our warehouse, we'll begin collecting the balances due. Balances must be paid within 2 weeks of us notifying you of this.
so does which statement is true? we have to pay in full by the 31st, or we can wait until they are finished??

Hi Matt;
I'll have Brian look that over and make any necessary changes but the balances are not going to be due until we get word that the order has shipped to us from the manufacturer (probably late Feb-early March). The only thing that might cause this to be sooner is if we get the 20 orders in long before Jan 31st in which case we may place the order earlier than Jan 31st and if the manufacturer gets them done and out the door faster. If that becomes an issue and there are a few people who need the extra time to pay their balance, I don't see that as a problem as long as arrangements are made ahead of time. But balances will not be due on Jan 31st. The option to pay in full now is just that, an option for those who don't want to mess with balances and just want their order out the door as soon as the shipment arrives.
Mike Lewis - PFYC-PartsForYourCar.com
EDIT: Brian has fixed the language regarding deposits and final payments. Please read the details on the ordering page.
