Interior spruce up

Well, I'm not too happy with the color of my dash and seats in my car. I was wondering if there was a kind of spraypaint or paint that i can use to change the color. I would like it to be all black with a few red accents. The color of the body is the dark red/ burgundy, so I was thinking a black inside would look nice.

Thoughts, comments, opnions, suggestions welcome :D

And right now i have a tan/greyish interior.

Hmm, reupholstering seems like it would be alot of work and money. me with no job = me with no money. The dash is allready fading a bit up near the defrost vents, and i figured I would just paint over that. instead of painting it the same color I figured i would just go and paint it black instead of the stock color.

And i dont know how to fiber glass a dash?

Well. I figure i might as well try it. Cause the dash is all ready starting to fade near the winsheild. If it looks like crap, peels, fades, or chips then i'll get a new dash :p

Got any paint suggestions?

Really the best thing to do is use a product called SEM. It is applied like paint but it penetrates the material like a dye. It will not crack or chip over time and it is a very durable product. Almost any auto body supplier will carry this product.

Can this SEM be used on the seats, or will i have to get new seats?

Well it would depend if you have fabric or leather. Im told it will work on leather seats.

Why do people like to paint there interiors paint is ment to be on the exterior of the car. Why don't you just get some suede and re upholster the seats and what ever you want red and black. it will look a lot better than paint and it will last longer and will not chip.

I dont have the knowledge needed to reupholster the entire interior. as for the seats those are getting replaced with red and black ones anyways

you do not have to get suede. Also there are vidoes on line on how to do it. There are also step by step directions on how to do it.

Ok then. I dont have the TIME to do it or money to have it done for me. All I want is to change the color, no reupholster. I appreciate the advice but I want this to be done using paint/dye because its cheap, easy, and will take me maybe 8 hours to do the entire interior. so please can someone tell me what paint/dye is good for this?

thank you, has anyone ever done so without having chipping or cracking? well you will want to do like 2 or 3 coats and then use clear coat. also make sure u sand it down so the paint has something to stick on. I did that when i painted my first alero's interior all black and it came out good. the clear coat is what protects it.

ok. like a matte clear should look ok then. how long did that last?

after you sand it, make sure you use a primer too. or else it wont really stick and it will come out blotchy.
from personal experience i wanted to do this same exact thing and learned the hard way.
you will regret painting your interior. trust me.

i would go with gray or white primer.

wash all pieces with HOT SOAPY WATER, this release`s the molding agent, if its still slick then washing with the same hot soapy water but now with a GREY SCUFF PAD

thats it 2 times of washing

now your going to use a ppg product dx103 and not a wax and grese remover using that will ruin the preping process

after that APPLY ADHESHION PROMOTER!!!! bully dog or sem what ever you can find ya need it!!! 10-15 mins to dry it has to dry!!!!!!!!

never do you apply paint in and or on wet its always medium from a rattle can, letting each coat flash off

same goes for the clear coat

thats it super easy, no need for primer, no need for any other redunkalouis step, so easy a monkey can do this

I will post pictures of mine later. I used SEM vinyl dye on the dash (don't prime, just clean first) and SEM flexible paint for the plastic. That was several years ago and it still looks fine. I sprayed the dash when it was 35 degrees out. That stuff works great.

Thank you, as for vinyl though is this the same process? I understand the plastics bit, its no different from hydrodipping where you have to flame treatr the plastic to get all the release agents out. Thanks this will help alot bdyman.

I can attest to Duplicolor vinyl/fabric. It worked well for me. You will need multiple coats though. It is quite runny and the "paint" (more like a dye) absorbs into the vinyl the first coat or two. Krylon plastic paint has also worked well for me. Here's a few pics of my current interior project:

will dentured alcohol work? Living in alaska I do not have acess to SEM porducts or that solution PPG DX103

Damn I like that! Only downside to that is the car is 10x hotter when the sun is shinning on it..
