you dont compress the spring you will find out the hard way when you knokced out or missing teeth or have a broken hand and wind up in the hosiptal
get a spring compressor, or just have a shop swap over the springs
I didnt ask about a spring compressor, I was asking about an impact gun, as in the changing springs how to there seemes to be alot about the need for an impact gun..............

well all there is to get them out is the 3 nuts on top, no impact needed there. then there is 2 big ones down on the knuckle. that is where a impact is VERY helpful getting those loose. if they have never been off before they can be a bitch. if you don't have a impact, make sure you have a long breaker bar. if you have that you should be able to get it, just make sure you tighten them up really good too since you have no impact.
also, like bdyman said, do not try to take the spring off the assembly without a spring compressor. you could actually get really hurt or disfigured if that thing flys off at your face. just pay someone with a spring compressor to switch them.

if ya dont compress the spring, a impact gun is the least of your worry
we use impact gun aor air tools to make the job easier, and faster
and to break loose old rusty bolts

To make it easy, just use a couple bigass ratchet straps while the strut is still on the car.
Aside from that, noooo, you don't need an impact gun. I've had struts in and out without one... it's a big pain, but doable. Just make sure you have a BIG breaker bar. BIG.
Once that's off run the top nut off, relieve the strap, and toss on the new spring (sprint doesn't need to be compressed to go back together!)
