Whats the details on the car?
What alternator?
What size wiring in the big 3?
What size power wire you running?
How much money you got to spend?
You are getting into an area thats going to require a high output alternator, ample wiring and quite possibly a secondary battery in the back. Total cost on these items will set you back a minimum of $500 upwards $1,000 or more.
I would advise against the JL. The basic answer is because its a single 3 Ohm coil. So you want about 750 WRMS @ 3 ohms. That alone is NOT cheap and finding something rated like that is impossible... So you would want 1000 WRMS @ 4 ohms... To be comparable.
Heres some other options:

DO NOT GET THE HCCA
Also be VERY aware that if you buy a single 12 of almsot any of these subs, you will NOT have a trunk or much of one.
You can kiss about 6 cubes of space goodbye- outside dimensions.

Oh and lastly...
if you want deep rich tight bass you want a sealed box. Many of these subs are aimed at ported ONLY- hence my previous remark.
You will not get the transient response out of a ported box you get out of sealed. Also when you go sealed you need a sub with more xmax...
Keep this in mind before your upgrade is a downgrade.

Good call, it's hard to make serious suggestions without specs.

Or you could go with a cute little DD9515. ;)

We need specs and pricing!
I would go 2 12" Memphis subs with at least an 1000w Memphis amp. Just going by experience and what I have owned before. I would hit 159dbs at least at any comp.

Head Unit i wish i owned... http://signature.crutchfield.com/S-3ndjyWclNCt/s_113KDCX993/Kenwood-Excelon-KDC-X993.html
Owned 3 kennwood units (KDC-MP238, kdc-mp242, kdc-mp538u), happy with ALL of them. Also installed for two friends, again, not a single problem. Auxiliary input as well as direct usb control for iPod/etc, so you can control your iPod through the head unit itself.
$270.00 crutchfield/ $215.00 ebay.
Just a suggestion... :)

i have a pioneer AVH5700DVD and as far as features/fitting in the alero- it does a great job (after you gut the inside of the dash). its got its own subwoofer channel which is pretty handy i might say. got mine for $200 off craigslist. have an Fi BL 12" in a 3.9 ported box. hits 137 @ 29hz on the dash, but i think if i tried to increase the spl i could get it closer to 140. a lot depends on the box

I had lots of issues with Kenwood gear, but that was in early 2000's
Its been about 8 years since I messed with their stuff. Maybe they have turned it around, I hope.
The remotes were notorious for being weak- more than one item being turned on warranted adding a relay...
