I want to put a roof rack on my 2000 4dr Alero. I'd like the standard type simple bars so I can transport my canoes n kayaks.

I tried to use an old rack I had with a universal clip system. The pads rest on the sheet metal roof about 3" from the door edge, but I notice that my 50 LB kayak is denting the roof. The roof has absolutely no cross member supports inside, no roll bars to sit the rack pads on.

So I'd like to know if the tower style racks that mount at the very edge of the door frame on the roof will work. Thule n the Jap brand are mush too expensive for just a basic rack that I can get in a no name brand for $30.

So my question is will a tower type rack work for my load of about 100 lbs at most? I'll be driving on the thruways at speeds of 70mph. My boat is also tied at the front n back by 2 lines, underside of the bumper where I had eyes welded to the steel member and the cross member under the the hood by the latch so there is no side to side movement of the boat, just roof squish.

Any thoughts? Any experiances?

I have an Alero not an SUV and would never even consider buying a pig to get my boats around.

Yakima roof racks FTMFW!!!

I've used mine primarily for bikes (I've transported 3 at once), but they also have carriers for skis, snowboards, kayaks, canoes, etc. I don't take chances that any of my cargo will move when I'm barreling down the road at 70+.

You may need to consult a manufacturer's fit guide, as most cars have a limitation on how much weight you can safely carry on the roof.

I saw those at the store, tower style on he door edge of the roof, with universal clip system to the door gasket. The no name brand I was looking at had the same exact setup for $50 instead of $240.

You're mounting it on an ALero right? 3 bikes would be about 60lbs-90lbs? My kayak is 50 lbs and my canoe is about 80.

Great, I'll pick it up tomorrow.

Thanks.

Yes, mounted on my 2000 Alero sedan.
I like the Yakima because once the initial setup was done, I can remove or install in about 5 minutes. It clamps secure, with minimal wind noise around the doors, and leaves no marks/dents on the roof (and the roof metal is pretty thin). I can also lock the rack to the roof, and I can lock all of my cargo to the rack (important when I'm carrying $2500 in bikes).
Also, if I want to move it to my wife's Mazda, all I had to do was get a different set of $40 door clips.
