View Full Version : Replacing Factory Speakers

Well, I recently bought and 04 Alero fully loaded with the 3.4L V6. (Pics Soon), I traded in a deathtrap 96 Ford Taurus, And which I ripped out my stereo I had installed, I am currently running my factory cd player in the Alero (because I learned I needed wiring harness, dash mount, and a module to control the CHIME B/S, total over $350), with 2 12" Orion Cobalt subs, on a (don't judge me :p ) 360W SPL Amp, this little amp actually makes some loud noise. But anyways I was looking for some input on replacing my factory door and read deck speakers with some affordable, clean sounding speakers. In the old Ford I ran front 6 1/2" Rockford's, and Sony Xplod for rear deck 6x9's, Although was not able to retrieve when I traded it. Any input will be helpful for something that can complete my install, Thanks.

Dude its like 30 bucks to install a radio in our cars. U need a din kit, wiring harness and antaena adapter. Its like 30 bucks d00d eff the chimes... I have an extra antenae adapter for sale 8 bucks shipped and as for speakers pioneer are better than stock and fairly cheep, but I'd say talk to ryan from ohio, resident audio guru. He'll point u in the right direction

So, my 2000 still has the chimes after I installed the generic wiring harness for the stereo. Are different years wired differently?

Perhaps, I had ABC warehouse and Best Buy tell me I need the Module, or i Take a risk of harming dash controls, I've never had it happen, Only reason I care is because I would never hear the end of it from the woman if it looks ghetto, or messes sht up.

Well, the dash kit doesn't quite fit right, I still need to take care of that. I haven't really cared enough, I'm not out to impress with looks. Maybe someday, but for now, with this car, it gets me from a to b in a fun fashion

i'd get the chime module. if you already have a deck, it shouldnt cost you too much.

when i did my stereo he's about the costs

the chime module was the most expensive at $70
but the wire harness was 20 bucks
and the dash kit is 20 bucks at walmart. and they sometimes have the chime module there. i'm not sure if they are the right ones though.

i'm not sure what your buying for 350

nope chimes only. wont mess up anything they say it will but it doesnt. Did buy it though but from buddys shop was like 20-30 bucks.

$300 for din, wiring and antenna adapter?

I better raise my prices...

I carry Metra Products.

The fit kit will be about $20, Wiring Harness $60 (w/chimes) $20 without, Antenna adapter is $5.

For front speakers, if you dont want to much modding:

http://americanbassusa.com/front/showcontent.aspx?fileid=47 $45

http://americanbassusa.com/front/showcontent.aspx?fileid=45 $85

Plus shipping from Toledo Ohio to you. Or you can pick it up.

Also if you want, I can pre-wire your harness for another $15- but you gotta send it to me. I use Solder and shrink wrap FYI.

I believe it was 03 where GM started using the chime BS, prior the module wasn't needed, but everything after it does.

I recommend Rockford Fosgate, at least the Punch Level, but if you can afford it go POWER.

But you have to remember anybody that loves car audio has their own brand that they stand behind.

In other words, just don't buy some speakers from the bottom of the Car Audio brand spectrum and you will love them.

I just installed the wiring harness for my new radio and I hooked up the radio and all of a sudden all my speakers started vibrating really hard. What is the problem? i checked all the connections and mapped everything perfect(took me 3 hours :S) so whats the deal? and what is a chime module and what does it do?

Stickybuddz420
02-17-2010, 11:29 AM
I agree on the Rockford's. And as with the vibrating speakers, seems as if u have wires touching somewhere, or if you're factory speakers have small crossovers or a small black box integrated, it may have to be removed, this happened in my ford Taurus, i couldn't use any speaker untill i removed them or they would fuzz loudly/vibrate. I'm not positive, but hey its worth a look!

No offense here guys... but the OP has 3 choices. A/B/C
A: well known audio guru who is also a dealer. Supplies many members with top notch equipment.
B: A total newb named stickybuddz420 (read into that as much as you want)
C: Chipmunk... who...well.. speaks for himself. (and not even himself some the time!)

choice is obvious. Any advice other then A's... can be omitted.

as for the buzzing.. you probably screwed up the harness somewhere. Our cars DO NOT have crossovers for the back. Some have a in car amp, which complicates later audio installs, but nothing other then what you changed could affect your speakers thus far. The fronts have a small cap in line, that runs up to the speakers... but thats the front, not the back.

Ok,

The harness for your car is $75, fit kit is $20.

These are Metra units- not that Schoshe walmart junk that warps...

I already quoted the speakers.

$225 total with quality equipment here, with a 1 year warranty on the speakers from manufacturer.

Wait... so it's $45 and $80 for front and back pairs or PER speaker? I thought it was the price per.

only subs are sold in singles. (unless your buying replacement speakers)

any standard speaker kit is sold in pairs.

Ryan from Ohio

Well dont expect bass out of speakers in this area, simple as that.

If you want bass get a sub.

I didn't say I wanted thumping bass, I just want BASS. The ones I have now just can't handle it. They're impressive treble speakers, but crackle on lower frequencies.

4x6 and 6x9 down to a 5.25 and 5x7, that's how much surface area lost? I made a mistake and didn't think the difference would be as drastic as it was. I simply wish to go back. The only reason I changed them out in the first place was because when I got the car, two of the speakers were blown.

"B: A total newb named stickybuddz420 (read into that as much as you want)"

Well, I am a newb to owning a Alero, so naturally I would be a newb to the stereo that lies within, but I do have past knowledge of car audio. I am far from expert, and always willing to learn, I figure more insight from different angles is more helpful than 1 idea, Just my opinnion though. =)
