I am thinking of getting 17 inch Grandprix GTP rims... main reason is that the tire I'm trying to buy doesn't come in the right size for 15 and I also don't want the aftermarket look. Any suggestions? Anyone else here has some OEM 17 5x115 or 114.3 that fits well and doesn't have a huge logo in the middle?

What tire are you looking for?
There are tons of GM wheels that will fit... Almost anything FWD that isn't a j-body and even some RWD. Lots of other cars have the 5x114.3 as well. Logos are no big deal, you can replace those. My wheels were originally on a CTS.

Tires: Dunlop Z1
I have the specs needed for the rims, just cant find many 17 inch oems. Most are 15 and 16.

why OEMs with your autocross fetish i would think aftermarket rims would be a much better choice....

does not want the look, but i second the fact that you love to autoX, so aftermarket would be better

looks like we will both be running Direzza z1's, im going to try them. they are the only tires in their class so far i can find in the sizes i want. my falken azenis did badass but they dont have 265/40/17.

Why not 16"?
Either way, this style would look good with a set of olds center caps (or blank ones)

Why? I don't really see the advantage of aftermarket in autocross. Lighter rims do increase acceleration but have hardly anything to do with handling. Shorter tire/wider rim however has positive effect by giving you a stiffer side wall. Other than the looks, I can get a set of used OEM rims for $200 with the money I'm saving, I could have a set of wet tires too! ;)

Again the shorter the side wall the stiffer the tire and also my choice for 16 inch and dunlop z1 would be 225-50-16 vs. 225-45-17 which seems to be a closer fit.
BTW just finished my first auto-x after the mods (shocks, springs, and front swaybar) I'll report my findings once the results are up.

how wide are they though? and 225 width is the stock alero tire width size, so i really don't see what you are gaining other than a shorter sidewall.....

Mine came with 215 as well (not a nice alero lol) but the main thing about tire grip is the tire design and compound. For an every day driver who lives in a rainy area, the dunlop z1 is the best street tire I can get.
I hate to turn this into a tire grip vs. width thread but tire width has little to do with grip... most of the time you will get a little more grip and sometimes you actually loose some grip by going wider.... many variables to consider.

i know this, but you said wider rim for wider tire above, which is why i brought up the width thing. For me personally though, wider is better for straight line racing...

My main reason for changing the size was that Dunlop z1 comes in limited sizes only and I had to pick something... On the tire calculator this seemed to be the closest fit.
And I do agree with you that in straight lines wider tires will most likely help... specially on dry roads. I have to worry about hydroplaning though and wider tires are more prone to that.
Back to the rims.... do you think $200 is reasonable for those?

ah ok, well that fits, me personally i have potenza re050A, 255/40/17s in the front and 235/35/17s in the rear...

Looking at the ratings the re05a seems to have bad treadwear.
Comparing the two:
#16 on max performance:

#2 on extreme performance (better wet traction than #1):
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/surveydisplay.jsp?type=EP
A couple of people autocross with these and result wise they are right below the r-compounds.

See, me personally i don't care about the treadware. Why, you may ask? Well your d1z or whatever they are have a listed price of $171 a piece for my 255/40/17 tire size, I didn't even look up the 235/45/17s. I paid $120 total for my barely used re050a tires, and should get me by this summer with some drags and autocross thrown in there no problem.....
