So i finally got sick enough of the lousy 4x6s GM placed in the front of our cars and decided to give it a facelift. Stopped at the American Bass HQ in Maple Heights today and picked up a few speakers:

6 6.5" SQ-65CBs
2 SQ-T2 tweeters

http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/76/speakersz.jpg

Ill be building the panels tomorrow. Im not sure if i can add the 4x6 to the panel as well. would that work? i dont see why it wouldnt. updates to come

Are all of those going on the door panels??

You're gonna need some 26z and candy paint, too, if so. Lol j/k. But don't do anything with those stock 4x6s.. throw them away.

MattismodderX
05-09-2010, 01:43 AM
yea 3 on each door + the tweeter. i was gonna throw the 4x6 on the door as well just for extra cone area. would make the design look pretty cool

Have you thought about using kick panels? 2 will fit into the door much easier then 3 http://www.qlogicdirect.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=222_258_341&zenid=4610f252c9d1f0dde71765564fbdee39. Amp? Crossovers? Tweeter placement?

I would of only went with 2 6.5's per door to maintain a normal ohm load.

I would of only went with 2 6.5's per door to maintain a normal ohm load.

i was thinking of adding the 4x6s to even out the load. does that work? or even the 5.25s in the back

and i didnt have enough cash on me to get another pair

the tweeters came with a crossover, and i have a sony 4 channel amp im pickin up tomorrow. 300rms over 4 channels.

Ryan from Ohio
05-09-2010, 11:04 AM
That wont work.

Because its a different speaker. Must all be the same speakers to function in that fashion.

MattismodderX
05-09-2010, 11:11 AM
this is how i was gonna wire it

http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/7547/77733181.jpg

even with each @ 2ohm this wont work?

Ryan from Ohio
05-09-2010, 11:17 AM
You will have like 1.5 Ohm load.

It will work providing the amp can hang with it.

MattismodderX
05-09-2010, 11:19 AM
Ok so fk it. ill add 4 to each door with matching tweeters. why not go ape shit. gonna have 2 per door hooked up temporarily until i pick up another pair with more tweeters

Afugy
05-09-2010, 11:49 AM
I thought those are 8 ohm speakers? 3 of those will give you 2.6ohms per channel.

MattismodderX
05-09-2010, 11:52 AM
yes they are. so is that ok then?

Ryan from Ohio
05-09-2010, 12:31 PM
Ah

Well that will work. Its just an odd ohm load.

MattismodderX
05-09-2010, 02:36 PM
sweet. im glad i dont need to drop even more $ on this. apart from the extra tweeters. i think ill add 4 more tweeters on the headunits built in amp, but thats a project for another day xD

I'm doing something similar.
http://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/4/615694.jpg

Two DD 6.5s per door along with 2 DD tweeters.
400rms a side. Should be pretty loud. :scpimp:

So it figures just as soon as the doors come to place my sub's tinsel decides to explode. the terminal got knocked loose and it touched the basket, thus melting it (pics of the dmg below)

The doors are all ready to be cut for tomorrow. spent the time today planning out how it would fit with the contour lines and such. got a few tricks left up my sleeve but thats for when its going into the door.

drawing up the lines to see where to cut the panel

not really sure what im gonna do at this point. hopefully it can be fixed with a small piece of tinsel. other wise im just gonna have some serious mids for while

just picked up the amp to power the doors
does any1 know where to buy these little gold screws to screw in the speaker with?
http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/2473/0510001234.jpg

also the american bass 6.5s came with no instructions/wires of any kind so i need to pick up some wire to attach to the terminals (picture 2) where do you purchase these for the low?

I would highly advise soldering the wires to the speakers. Make a bundle somewhere and use a set of bullet quick disconnects there.

ill probly just end up soldering the wires to them, i didnt even think to do that. derr

also the speakers dont have any kind of labeling as to which side is positive and which is negative. both are 3/16". ive heard about connecting it to a AA battery but theres still a small possibility to damage the speaker. any other ways to find this out?

Run a phase test with them hooked up.

I can email you the test if need be.

Im with Grim.

What your about to do is create yourself one hell of a nightmare.

The work involved in sanding that bish out will kill a person. Your gonna have to glass the hole thing to. If you think just the pod area you are wrong. Unless you find a way to attached it with fasteners.

Mine looked good for most the summer. Until the glass broke free from the door panel...

cherrington17
05-12-2010, 10:40 AM
how are you getting around the problem of the window? it comes down right where speaker 2 and 3 are?

the fiberglass forums have a thread on an interesting way to glass TNUT fasterners into the mold, so you can bolt it into place.

MattismodderX
05-12-2010, 10:47 AM
its being wrapped with vinyl. bunch of 1" blocks around it to keep it on the same plane

Gr1m
05-12-2010, 11:49 AM
yep ur gonna have to glass the entire panel, and ontop of that, you will probably have to invert the speakers and then it will be very uncomfortable for the passengers in your car, judging by the amount that the baffleboard sticks out from the panel.

MattismodderX
05-12-2010, 12:56 PM
those photos were just to show the cut panels. almost everything has been considered and will be delt with. i just set the baffle on top of the panel lol

You are not going to be able to close your doors if the way I'm looking at it is right. The edge of your pods closest to the dash is gonna interfere.

You guys are wimps, lol!! Glass is the way to go.. it's not THAT much work if your layup and filler spreading skills are adequate.

the baffle was just set on top of the door panel just to show it. there was enough room cut to where it will still close on the dash. and if it doesnt for some reason, it is wood lol

Ok, baffles are wrapped in vinyl, all ready to be attached. hopefully done in the next week or so.

So i have the sony amp which is a 4 channel, but im not exactly sure how this wiring will work out
currently 8 drivers total. 6 speakers 2 tweeters. (8ohm speakers, 4ohm tweets)

This is how i was thinking of wiring it. is there a better configuration then this? im open to all input.
Channel 1
Both tweeters

Channel 2
Speakers 1, 2

Channel 3
Speakers 3,4

Channel 4
speakers 5,6

widbyj
06-01-2010, 04:29 PM
That's a great setup for MONO

You're gonna want to use two channels for the 'tweeters' - left and right.
Ditto for the 'speakers'. So now you've used all four channels with a huge load balancing issue, 1 tweeter vs. 3 speakers per side. Not to mention the rears at all....

Maybe just get another identical amp so you're using one for each side?

07-27-2010, 02:34 PM
well i have it all hooked up. its just sitting all over the seats xD. 2 6.5s on the front seat and 4 between the back 2. tweets up front as well to provide better sq. my right ear might explode soon. passneger side door panel is now useless. was gonna fiberglass it but then some1 broke it trying to close it. no now i need a new one of them. drivers side front spring is broken. sounds amazing tho! haha

EDIT: oh! and i forgot. my one buddy who was helping me build the original wood baffles but busted by the feds for certain things and when his garage was raided the cops destroyed the vinyl wrapped baffle that was ready to go in....bastards. so then i decided fiberglass would be a better option rather then going back to step 1 again. but then panel broke. etc.etc. now i need a new passenger door panel

well. FML

sub is blown to hell. was running it off the one voice coil for a good while now on about 600rms (2000rms sub). this thing was a monster and always sounded clean/sharp. never abused it, but the other day it stopped working. my buddy hooked it up to the multimeter and it read 46ohms. when he pushed the cone in it read .2 and .3 ohms. no idea wtf is wrong with it. time to sell the motor and get a new setup x_x. 1 door speaker got blown due to careless friends fucking around. 2 more are slightly damaged. center cap pushed in = fail

MattismodderX

the terminal got knocked loose when i was taking it out of the box (the fker is heavy) and i glued it back on but i guess it came loose and touched the basket- which then fried the one side's tinsel

That's was running the subs as such:
http://i389.photobucket.com/albums/oo331/Terrortodadeer/0418001454.jpg

After taking the video I threw the dmm on it and got a 2.2ohm reading outside the box. (The tinsels snapped on one side completely.) So therefore I was running "half the sub." Not technically, but without going into detail, it was seeing 1.2 to 1.4k in the video... The recone came in, which had bad glue on it from the shop and when I did the recone the cone tore from the spider. After calling in and bsing witht he owner he explained the situation, then sent me another recone with epoxy joints and 4 spiders! :yahoo: Just did the recone three weeks ago and I'm loving it. I'll have to get a new vid on the net. Hence my signature, I got some goodies that'll be in Friday. It's completely different now...

Anyways Matt, sorry to threadjack a bit. But really, DC Audio ftw. If interested I can pm you a price. (Honestly) Hope stuff gets figured out man.

well after a long drought of little to no work im now working 3 jobs and the income will slowly be coming in. i want to put 2 DC Audio lvl 4s in by spring, or something better if it comes around.

wanted to do a little update- installed my new kicker 350.4 last night and i can notice a different between this and my older sony 300.4 amp. much cleaner sound. this is the setup im currently running. yes all of those speakers are connected since the doors produce no sound. the tweeters are sitting on the traction control button area lol

theyre so loud it sounds fairly even behind me with the position of the one on the left compared to the headrest location. bout 30 seconds and your ears start hurting. bass just isnt as fun without screaming vocals. winds of plague is brutal
