Rear Defogger question

I read Redog's how to on the rear defogger and I found that I had the exact same problem as him. My connectors were melted pretty badly. I wanted to solder the connectors to the module but I'm afraid that it may eventually come loose again. I am pretty good at soldering so that is not the issue. I just want to know if anyone has had a problem with reliability after doing this.

:nuts: I have the same problem. I havnt tried to fix mine cause i dont solder.

could always just get a new module and connector with a length of wire and splice the new wires together. thats what i did because i also didnt have solder or a soldering iron.

I fixed mine a year ago and I've had no issues since then. Just make sure you solder a segment of wire that is the same thicknes as the the wire going into the connector. Otherwise it could overheat and melt.


Its a 15 min fix!

Mine is still going strong and I used soderless connections ;)

I still think that sodering is the best way to go, however, I had a very hard time fixing it because of the panel. I didn't want to remove it completely. On the 4 door I took the replacement out of, it was a lot easier because the panel removes easier

I didn't solder at all. I just spliced in bendable clamps, hooked those up to the contacts and shielded them with rubber tubing. Still holding strong 6 months later.

i solder mine 2 years ago and its still working great. and that was my first time soldering too

Solderiong is no big deal.

I did a day camp when I was a kid. The project was to solder a light to a curcit board and then hook it up to something and the light would light. Mine worked. I was also 10 years old ;)

I found the module and I soldered the wires to the board, but I guess that when I soldered them, I caused a short. It was working for a bit and I guess I shorted it out. I just went to a local junk yard and picked up two new ones with the connectors .. I was lucky to find those two because most aleros there already had them removed. So all I gotta do is hook them up and I'll be good to go for this winter.

So I installed a new module but I noticed that only the defogger plug on the driver's side is heating up. The two on the passenger's side are cool. I checked the voltage across the driver's side defogger plug and the lower passenger's side plug and I'm getting 10V. I thought it was supposed to be around 6-7ish but i might be wrong. Each one of the defogging lines are at around 1.2ish volts a piece. Is this all normal

Sounds about right. Did you test for continuity across the heating element?
