my transmission is starting to bug me.
when i first got my car i would back out of my driveway pretty fast and while gliding back i put into neutral and then into drive while still going a little backward. I think ive done some damage. ive started to be more careful and what ive noticed is now when i stop and go from R-N-D i have to wait a few seconds for it to go into gear, because if i dont the car will shake if i give it gas too soon. any tips on fixing before the problem gets too far? or do i have to live with it. - or sell it off to some sucker
all input appreciated.

If you want to gear it while still rolling back, get a standard.
Take it to a mech. and explain to him the problem. If it's fixable he will give you a free quote. Otherwise live with it.

it will cost enough that you will learn not to tranny drop like that anymore...

Does anyone know if it's usually the internals in the transmission that go or maybe just a torque converter problem? my uncle recently had 3 ford windstars come in the same week all with transmission problems the customers were complaining about-he replaced the torque converters on all 3 and it fixed the problems...i don't know if its the same with the alero though.
bigshot-if it's a torque converter problem, you lift the engine and the torque converter sits right there. it's not that hard on the alero, maybe a couple hundred labor plus parts.

when you trans drop its my understanding that its the internals...however Ive had a 700r4 with a bad torque converter and I didn't catch it in time and it smoked the trans...I'm not sure about the alero trans but if its a bad converter on a r4 it will kick out of OD and back in instantaneously

lol. if i just ignore it and stop neutral dropping will it stay as it is or will it still get worse if its not looked after?

take it to a shop, don't ignore it as that might make it worse

Seriously, we'd have to know what engine your car has to get pricing that's even remotely accurate. I could probably get a rebuilt transmission put in my 1995 Escort for under $2000. I see used transmissions on eBay for Alero's as cheap as $300 plus shipping. One of them is in upstate NY, plus you would have installation. For a completely new one, I'm guessing it's at least $2000.
Of course if they have AAMCO in Canada, they will charge you $4000-$5000 for a transmission that will fail in a couple of months (if not sooner), so don't go there.
Also, even though ths $US = $Can in value lately, I bet the prices for everything in Canada are still higher. I'm sure you can explain that, but that probably belongs in off topic.

Two years ago I bought an auto from GM for my Malibu, cost was $1,800 for the trans alone, labor extra. Does have a 100,000 mile warranty though and all the factory improvement mods... better than original.

psssh nobody does that anymore, the junk cars always get pawned off to high school kids looking for their first car.. thats why I only buy from the elderly  common courtesy went out the window with y2k

I got mine from a dealership, but I'm the second owner, and the first owner was old and kept the car looking like brand new (other than a couple scuffs and a ding in the driver's side fender). It's great too cause I'm pretty sure it has a fairly new head gasket in it, so that won't be an issue any time soon.

Ive never bought a car from a dealership (I don't like getting robbed) I always buy them outright with cash and from someone who I know has taken care of it usually the elderly, I bought my first truck from a retired Boeing engineer, it was in IMMACULATE condition oil changed every 2k with mobile 1..still had the window sticker from 1989 and every receipt for every mod and maintenance...but unfortunately when your 14 a 600 hp truck can get away from you fairly easily..payed $5500 and wrapped it around a telephone pole 7 months after I got it, engine was untouched but while I was working one day my stepbrother decided he was going to help me and start pulling the engine, he left it uncovered and it rained...filling the cylinders with water
Then I bought my 90 step side for $500 and have put in the ballpark of 600-620k on it...and alot of money

The nice thing is the dealership had just gotten my alero in, so they hadn't done any of their cleaning stuff(which it didn't need), so it was cheaper for that, plus I talked them down a thousand dollars, and got 4 new tires thrown in as well.

back to the main topic, I would take your car in to a trans shop and have the fluid changed. More than likely there will be some very small metal shavings in there from the tranny drops and it would be good to get them out and get a new trans filter and some new fluid in. don't bother with any additives and don't get it flushed, just get it changed. other than that, you could try resetting the transmission by disconnecting the battery for an hour. this would allow for the transmission to re-learn driving habits and may make it shift better. those are the two places I would start at.
