This time, a-la clutch style.

Had nothing to do this weekend, so I decided to add this little mod. I've wanted to for a while, so.... it was that time.

btw... this took WAY longer than I expected it to.

how-to?

cherrington17
11-07-2010, 06:17 PM
nope. its just 3 leds. 2 red 1 blue. epoxied into the front of the panel about 3" down from the top.

spliced into my leads to the vents (up in the front) and wha-la. done.

but it took an unnecessarily long time to do. fishing the line took FOREVER

I can imagine, couldn't you have just taken the panels off? instead of fishing through..

cherrington17
11-07-2010, 06:48 PM
no, i mean fishing the line from the center of the backseats, up to the center console...

I didn't want to remove all that, so I fished. And it sucked.

when i'm bored and have the time. School has been brutally busy lately. I had a weekend to myself (between exams) so yeah... just kinda started doing something.

I have another idea in the works, but I gotta figure out how to do it first.

Nice :)

those holders are going to KILL your glow. its way to directional with those.

..and that much heat shrink... (just the quantity is funny... it looks like you did a good job with it)

it looks clean, but i can almost guarantee your going to have issues sometime. I hope you don't... but I can almost guarantee you will.

i put hot glue in the tips to diffuse the light and make all the colors blend if i dont theres 3 rings of color lol and those tips work great actualy there crome inside aswell with the hotglue they put off the nicest glow!!

it was clutch's idea. he did it in his car a while back, and posted it in the showcase (with his buick, iirc) I just liked it, and used it in my car.

Back in the good 'ol days us glow guys used to feed ideas off each other, and nearly compete for "best in show" in the showcase.

I have a 6 position rotary switch, that changes the "scheme" in my car. 2 colors, 3 settings.

gauge red
gauges blue
gauges/vents/seatbelts red
gauges/vents/seatbelts blue
gauges/vents/seatbelts/floors red
gauges/vents/seatbelts/floors blue

its not like they strobe or anything. I originally had blue, and it looks dumb with a red car, but the color is still nice. So i like to change once in a while. It makes any lighting project ungodly more difficult... but its just what I do.

well damn cherry i think you could probably make some extra cash doing that on the side couldn't you cause yes ik you stole the idea from clutch and yes his looks good too but your damn near an LED god imho if i had the money i would pay you to do something like that for me :) but that's just cause i know i not good with soldering anything together.....

I've had offers, and even was doing work for a little bit...but never finished it. I kept him up to date, with all the trouble I was having keeping the thing working... and before it was done, he killed his car. So the project fell through (no money was exchanged, so no harm no foul)

But I normally have zero free time to do this stuff... And the money I'd have to charge to make it worth my time, would make it not worth it to you guys. I'd like to do my work as cheap as possible... I'd be getting screwed price wise.. then if I charged enough to make it worth it, I'd never be making anything. :glare: Its a no-go. If I did it for a job, then maybe... but being a student, no way.

The rotary switch is a badass idea for sure.

I feel your pain dong things for people. I get that quite a bit, people wanting junk done. Pretty sure I charge peanuts... I've put decks in for like $10, subs in for $30... I damn near did it for free this summer for a bunch of random people I didn't really even know lol.

It would be a really cool job, but the market's just not there. You'd have to be a full on installation shop that also carries lighting accessories...sigh if only.

Wasn't sure where to ask this, but since I'm doing a major LED upgrade I had a quick question, mainly for Dr. Cherry. Has anyone used Scotchlok's to tap into wires? I've heard they are hit and miss but I really don't wan't to splice anything for this.

cherrington17
04-19-2011, 08:02 PM
Scotchloks??? Never heard of them.

The best (and only preferred way) is to cut/solder. IMHO.

these are scotchloks http://www.mcmelectronics.com/content/productimages/s4/108-010.jpg
and i use them for most of my small gauge wiring i do. they are pretty good for tapping into power or ground

also WTF is google

Ehh... I don't like 'em. I prefer a solid melted metal on metal connection. I know it'll never break then.

I've seen them used, and they seem to work fine. I'll never use them though.

scott192
04-20-2011, 02:22 AM
not a big fan of them myself i used them for the brake light resistors and there a pain in the ass id rather cut and splice!!

lonnie
04-20-2011, 07:55 AM
Don't use quick connects...they will eventually fail or cause problems troubleshooting.
