This is what happens when you over drive your LFE (sub)... Try turning the juice down some, and you should hopefully avoid this problem next time. :) Must have been a sight though!

gains at half and the deck is at half not the issue at all!! its just from a bad tincel in the spider

On that power you had to of been clipping man. :( And if it was indeed a "bad tinsel" then tell Fi about it and they should cover a recone kit under warranty. Sorry to hear about you luck though! :(

with the BTL im shit outta luck there is no warrenty since it takes so much power lol and it burnt where the tincel meets the cone... i dont think it had anything to do with clipping since the coil was mint!! its still copper lol no smell nothing!!! i think its from too much glue on the spider and the tincel inside spider #2 and #3 and it made a weird pinch on it... ill take some pics when i find my camera

I'm sure all your neighbors are happy about not having to hear your music whenever you drive past their house.

I'll be honest, I have seen firsthand experience of what clipped music can do to tinsel leads. The overall quality of tinsels can only stand so much in thermal handling before they begin to heat up too much. When I first got my subwoofer, I had it in a 4 ft^3 box tuned to 30Hz and facing the trunk. Due to the fact that it was facing the trunk, it took a little while for the smell to reach the cabin. By the time this smell had gotten to me, the damage had already been done. Doing this numerous times lead to the stitching holding the leads to the spider to snap. At first I thought this was manufacturer defect, but actually, the tinsels warmed up enough to burn the threads and actually leave minor burn marks on the spider itself. Similar to what you are seeing. Eventually, I reconed and learned my lesson. Since I have had my box aimed into the cabin I have only noticed smell once. This was when I was playing full-tilt for 10 minutes with a single battery, Hifonics amp, and 11.0 volts. (Clipped.)
Honestly, with your box firing into the trunk, I would say that it is safe to assume that this was a clipped signal played continuously, heating up the coils enough to actually begin burning the spider itself. People have ran 4,000rms all day to BTL's on those same tinsels. Difference being, they are clamping that power and keeping their voltage above 15.0 all day. Just be careful once you get the recone man. According to your recent threads, I'd start beefing up your electrical more. I follow your youtube channel too. You love to play full tilt, (who doesn't?) and your electrical is your weakest link. Just my $0.02. :thumb:

yea i got a mechman alt on order and if needed i will add another battery
and for the smell it smelt like burning amp and by that time fire was already going lol oh well thats why i got this sub cheap recones
to top it off the last week or so i thought i had bad rca's it would cut out at low levels... so the tinsel had been shorting out for a while i think

well to add to the last post i got the voltage control module from mechman aswell with the 270 amp HO alt with 165amp idle!! gonna have some crazy power... also id like to go to the 14v batterys
and if you plan on getting a h/o alt for your car mechman is the place to go at the moment for our cars "3400" its $425 + 50 shipping to canada and the VCM is 50! so thats $75 savings only until dec 31!!

Sorry, I have to comment on that statement "break it in". In my line of work I get to talk to speaker techs that have been build, repairing, and designing drivers for many years, some of them in their 60's. A few times I have asked them if they have ever heard of a "break in" for drivers, all I ever get are laughs, like when you go up to the guy working the sound board at a concert and ask him how many watts he's pushing.

Thats very odd the vets laugh at break ins. perhaps seince they are 60+ years old they dont know the newer speakers NEED to be broken in to be able to reach maxX without cracking rubber, I have personally seen many new speakers get pushed hard and they all have got messed up in the process, but with people who let the rubbers wear in have far far less problems/longer speaker life, IMO break in 12" speakers and larger for a short period to allow the rubber to gently and WARMLY stretch to its max so it is comfortable with that much movement. also IMO don't break in subs in the winter, its a lot of stress on them just to play them cold, so a break in period in Michigan weather would be hideous, as i have seen subs warp like they got put in a oven.

M2 Monster finds your reasoning crazy, cracking rubber, should I break in my condoms too?

It's a D&B M2 monitor wedge, nicknamed the "Artist Killer" because of it 145db rating.

well im guessing you have never seen an fi btl lol when these are new you could stand on the sub and it wouldnt move!! the spider is so stiff you can rip it off the glue joints!! its not a concert speaker lol it has nothing at all to do with the rubber

ya i am getting a 15 inch BTL how long did u break it in for.

Really, because you can even go to the FI forums and they'll tell you the same thing, you don't need a break in period, it is a myth. They'll just break them selfs in through normal use, if you have glue failure it's your own fault. Plug it in and turn it up, you're not going to hurt your speakers.

ive ran my 12 inch memphis for the last two years in summer and winter. I wake up go to my car and start it up and as soon as im on the road its cranked ive been doing that for the past two years plus however old it was before I got it ( btw I own a ported box ) with 0 issues ive never once believed in this break in period and if there was one it would but already broken in before you got it from the factory like engines are

If you have ever owned or ran a new "high-powered" subwoofer, then you would be able to understand the actual stiffness. That is not directed at anyone in particular. Whether it be out of the box or fresh from a recone, before it has been put on its 1500-3000 rms, the spiders are typically stiff as Hell. Odds are you will not damage the speaker, but after time, the soft parts will loosen up, and the subwoofers Fs will drop.
Fs is a speaker parameter meaning "resonant frequency." The lower the Fs, the greater the driver's ability will be to play low frequencies. Lower Fs = lower notes) The trade-off, of course, would be difficulty in playing the slightly higher frequencies it was reaching before the break-in.
A "myth?" Meh not so sure. A necessity? Absolutely not People have been playing full tilt for years as soon as the glues dry. Recommended? Well... if you are worried because you are running 3X the rated power, sure, break it in.
