View Full Version : Pinstripe Covering For Taillights

This is a great alternative to eurolights or blackouts, and it only costs about $20 to do. I've sent this out to 3 people in the last 2 months so thought i'd post a how to.
This is a much cheaper way of doing your tails, and can be done in any colour or pattern you like. I'll tell you how i did them and then you can modify the procedure anyway you like.
I bought 4 rolls of chrome 1/4 inch pinstriping and 1 roll of 1/8th inch pinstriping. The 1/8 inch is just used for spacing so it can be in any colour you want as it will not be staying on your car. The vinyl pinstriping goes on easier then the chrome or gold because it stretches a bit, and the vinyl is more transparent when your brake lights are on. You should be able to find it to match the colour of your car.
Find a line on your taillights to use as a starting point to make sure everything goes on straight, i used the seem just above the clear reverse light and the blinker light. do one section of taillight at a time, say start with the outside of the drivers side. Now stick a stripe of the 1/4 inch all the way across the outside section, following the line and rub it on well with your finger. it can hang over the edges of the light for now because your gonna cut all the extra off at the end so that the stripes all line up in the end. Now place an 1/8th inch strip right above that one, and then put another 1/4 inch strip above the 1/8th inch one and rub it on good. Peel the 1/8inch one off and place it above the 2nd 1/4 inch stripe.
You can use the 1/8th inch stripe a couple times before throwing it out. Just keep doing this leapfrog of stripes until you get to the top of the section of tail light, then do the bottom part of the light. when the section of light is covered cut off the extra pinstriping hanging over the edges of the light with a blade and rub all the stripes on again with your finger so that they are well stuck around the edges of the light, you don't want them to peel.
Do the same for the other 3 sections of taillight and your done. Try to get creative, put them on at an angle, or change the direction for each section of tail light. I think i'm gonna cut flames in mine to keep with the pattern on the inside of my car. anyways heres a picture of how mine turned out. I had silver vinyl on mine for 3 years and decided to peel it off and put the chrome one on. My chromes been on for 1 1/2 years now and i will be redoing it again this year as it has a few bubbles in it.
Takes about 2 hours for each section of taillight if you use 1/8th inch spacing, so about 8 hours in total. You get quicker as you go from tail to tail and fall in a groove. Hope this helps.
Post pictures on here after you've done the procedure so everyone can see what they turn out like. Keep modding

FormulaNERD
08-14-2004, 03:04 AM
yea, i saw this a few years ago on a jetta, white car with white pinstripes on the tails... looked nice
and marie, i'd look for a color closer to your car, but black might look good too, it's fairly cheap, so you could try it and if it didnt look good, no big loss...
turtles_ride

i think it would look almost like blackouts on yur tails. One advantage to this tho is that you can leave your reverse lights uncovered so you can still see where you're going when backing up. If you put the stripes only 1/8th inch apart you can barely see the red until you step on the brakes. Then the tail is so bright, and the vinyl so thin that it looks like the stripes aren't even there ta all. I did this on my front orange blinkers as well, before i learned how to clear them out :smokin: Let me know if you have any other questions.

In Canada they sell the pinstriping at a store called canadian tire. Like i said its pretty cheap. I don't know where they'd sell it in the states tho.

Same here....I think that the black would look good on a black car. My only question is this: Will the black pistriping allow enough of the light to emit through so the po-pos won't bother ya? I realise that the stripes in the how-to are an 8th apart, but I'm wondering if the brighter colors of vinyl allow more light through. ;)
Oh, and turtle? could you post a pic of your car farthur ( <---did i spell that right? ) away so that I could see what it looks like as a whole? thanks.

No problem, regarding pigs, i've been followed by em a few times but i think theres enough light shining thru when the brakes are on that they don't care. if they're picky about the blackouts in whatever state you're in tho i'd be prepared to peel it off if they want you to.

Since mine is black, how do u guys (girls  ) think the chrome would look. (too hokey?) I'm not real keen on blacking out a black car, specially since I don't want to blackout the headlights to match.

Since when is there such a thing as too much chrome? And you're one to talk pat, sportin 18 inch bling that you need sun glasses to look at! Chrome goes with any colour, and it takes on what ever colour your car is around, whether it be the green grass, white snow, or the 3 primary colours reflecting from your girlfriends lollipop!!! ;) LOL

My photoshop skills are pretty shoddy, so use a little imagination. I was thinking about using the black pinstripe in circular patterns with 1/8" spacing around each lens in the taillight, and then using 1/2" chrome stripes with 1/2" spacing to let some more of the red show thru The chrome could also be done at 1/8" to give the more Euro look, too. Personally, I really like Turtle's, but I do more driving during the day, so I want to be sure my lights shine thru. I grabbed mixmastercase's pic from the showcase cuz I don't have a digi cam yet.

08-17-2004, 11:40 AM
well this was kinda a rush job and not very straight, just like me. lol but anyway, i half assed it today just to get an idea on what it's gonna look like. ya'll can tell me what you think, as i know you will. like i said, it's not straight or even for that matter but i didn't use anything to space it. started out just using the backing off the pinstripe and scotch tape but i didn't care much about how even it was since it was just to give me an idea. oh and ignore the dirt. ;)

looks good so far, the great thing about pinstripe is that it will come right off if u don't like it. Or you can do cutouts with a razor (olds symbol or sumthin) to break the lines. On the red car, looks good, prolly smokin further away. Can't wait to get started on mine.

Lookin good Marie ! I wouldn't worry all that much about the lines being perfectly straight ( although it's nice ) 'cause i'm thinking that when the project is all done, people are looking @ the big picture, and not really scrutinizing it. When you finish the rest of the tails, take a pic from about 6-8 feet away...you'll see what I mean.

Like i said before if you put it closer together the light still shines thru fine, especially if your using the vinyl striping. I just hate how the taillights control the whole look of the back of our cars, that's why i've covered them up so much.

well since the spacing is smaller than the pinstriping, and the pinstriping is the same 1/4 that turtle used, i'm guessing no :P
it's 1/8th, but i think the black makes it look like more, i dont know.

You don't have to take the lights out to put it on, just do it on the car. The bubbling with the chrome is the reason i'm gonna redo mine. I think it just doesn't stretch enough with the curve. Next time i'll pull it really tight. having put both black and chrome on your car, which would you say is easier to put on?
cutelilcntrygrl
08-18-2004, 01:36 AM
pat, you should try that.
and talking about the bubbles around the corners, i had that problem but i pulled it back just about an inch and then heated it up with a hair dryer just a little bit (for like 3 seconds since it's so thin). hold the free end in one hand and use your index finger on the other hand and stick it back on, slowly. i'm not sure about the chrome because it's probably thicker, but for those that are gonna use black, you can try that.

well the black and chrome were just as easy, but the black looks perfect, the chrome is a different material, and doesnt really stretch, for me anyway. so im gonna go all black, with less spacing...
i also found that using 1/8th was pretty much a waste of alot of time, it's pretty easy to eyeball, and as you can see, mine looks pretty good. too bad i spent 5 bucks on some white 1/8th i'll never use again, lol
and i know i dont have to take the lights out, but would you rather do it sitting in a/c watching tv, or outside in the tennessee heat? exactly.

typical vinyl pinstriping from an auto store. i wouldnt reccomend the chrome, as it's not flexible/strechable like vinyl.
DCAleroGL
08-24-2004, 01:59 PM
I used the chrome 1/2" and black 1/8" The black is extremely flexible and the chrome is so not. Since my lights involved curving black lines around straight chrome lines, it worked out. I am trying to get them done soon so I can post pics. So far have 1/2 done. BTW, I think they look freakin' awesome! Will post ASAP, prbably in appearance.
turtles_ride
08-24-2004, 02:06 PM
1/2 inch tape is definately too thick if your using chrome, but will work well if your using the vinyl. 1/4 inch tape will work but you have to pull it real tight when you put it on. if you wanna use the chrome and not worry about the bubbles you could use 1/8th inch, it will be perfect, but it will take longer to put on cause you have to put on twice as many stripes.
DCAleroGL
08-24-2004, 02:12 PM
Something I forgot, the chrome does bubble easily if there is anything underneath. Clean the plastic with a good abrasive plastic polish like meguiar's plastiX to make the surface perfectly clean and smooth, otherwise the imperfections will show in the reflective chrome.

if I went with the same green as my car, I'm going to have to get it from a sign shop that deals in cutting vinyl, as my local Canadian Tire doesn't have ANY green pinstriping whatsoever, and I'm not sure how good that chrome would look on green, the black might look good though, so I might get that if the vinyl from the sign shop costs an arm and a leg.

yeah, i think covering the tails with the same colour is eye candy, looks sweet when you match your scheme or accent colours too. I'll be redoing mine soon tho, the chrome tape loses its gleam after 2 years of being washed and scratched. I'm thinkin of 1/8th inch chrome tape an 1/8th inch apart. I'd like to see what this would look like on a white car. I'm debating whether to color match it with white stripes or make the tail lights darker with the black. What do you guys think?
turtles_ride
11-04-2004, 10:14 AM
I think it would look good white, i've seen a VW thats had it done in white, and i think there's been a grand prix or grand am or something from the earlier 90s that came with white stripes across the lights stock from the factory. the nice thing is its cheap enough so that if you don't like it, its just a couple bucks out of your pocket. Although, it your windows are tinted, or if you have other black stuff on your car(like a bra, wind deflector, or window rainguards) then i think they'd look better in black.

I guess I'm stupid. Do you precut the strips or do cut them while on or do you just go from the roll? and are you suppose to stretch it while applying it?? haha
Youngblood77
11-14-2004, 04:21 PM
Just pull some off the roll, and hold it up to the tail light ( with the paper still on the back ) cut the vinyl like 2 or 3 inches too long, so that some striping hangs off @ each end. Place the stripe on the tail light, rub on it hard with your thumb to make sure the adhesive sticks well to the plastic, then cut the excess off. The vinyl does indeed stretch some when applying it, but don't worry too much about that. The main thing is that the stripes are evenly spaced, and make sure you follow the small squares in the plastic in order to keep them straight with the tail light ( left-right ) Hope this helps hun. B)
cutelilcntrygrl

And post some pics when you get it done too! I'm anxious to see how it turns out.
turtles_ride
11-14-2004, 07:35 PM
stretching it helps to get the airbubbles out and keep it nice and tight on light. you can do it with the vinyl, but the chrome and gold metal stripes don't really stretch at all. i start in the middle of the light and use the straight line along the turnsignal and reverse light to make sure i start out evenly, also that way if you start going off along the length of the strip, it doesn't look so bad at the the top and bottom of the lights. also press the stripes down really well with your nail, cut the extra off with a box cutter right against the plastic light, and then press the ends really well with your fingernail again. If you do it well it will stay on for 3 or 4 years no problem. Good luck, and definately post some pics
Youngblood77
11-14-2004, 09:06 PM
I'm currently in the process of try to get a patent on the whole white vinyl stripes on a white Alero idea, but noone will return my phone call.
One thing I did that I hope will help with durability, is to take a foot and a half of the striping, and run 1 pass around the circumferance of the light, covering all the ends of the horizontal stripes. I think that with a stripe covering all the ends of the other stripes, it'll keep the ends of all the others from "fraying"

I just finished mine, black stripes on a black car, and it looks way better than without. Now all I gotta do is buy a digital camera so I can share the joy. Definitely a great mod for the $$$. I did 1/8" stripes and 1/8" gaps so it's a bit finer, and I went over the whole thing, I didn't leave the reverse lights or signal lights uncovered.

you might wanna clear out your reverse lights just use a knife to cut the tape, they're really useful to have. I used to have the blackouts on my z24 and it was wicked at night without reverse lights.
I may look into picking up some silver pinstriping and doing an outline of my talight, like... outlining the light itself, then the different colored sections... i've seen it before, it looks nice

I did. You can read the whole thread if you dare... but I think the pics of the design are on the last or second to last page. Enjoy! (http://invision.aleromod.com/index.php?showtopic=10177) :)

Is there anyone else with me who does not think pinstriping looks good?
smlzalero
03-09-2005, 10:16 PM
Yup, lots.
I like it from far away, but when I put it on my tails, I thought it looked a little cheap, so I took it off.
(No offense to anyone whatsoever)

depends on the car
i thought it looked so so on mine, nothing special, but i really like it on maries, turtles_ride, and the recent bronze mist (cant remember who)
i guess it depends on the color of the car.
turtles_ride

^and if you don't go with the colour of the car, how many other things you have on your car that are the same colour as the pinstriping you used.

auburn night huh? dont recall hearing that color before... looks the same or similar to bronze mist though :)
and queen_b, check this thread again, there is only one comment about your car, and it wasnt even directed toward you, but you know that... you just quoted it.
get over it.
I haven't either, I just called a GM dealership and gave him my Vin# and he gave me the color name and paint code so I dunno. hehe

^ Either way, it's a sweet color! I'm thinking it's a little more brown/umber than the Mist is... maybe?

Its weird, at night it looks deep dark blackish purple, but in the day, it seems more brown. I can't really put my finger on it, but its gonna be black soon.
I picked up 2 things of pinstriping yesterday at pepboys, same color silver as my car... i'll try to do that, then if i don't like the silver i'll try the black.... just have to think of a design that would look nice... and for you guys that like... left the reverse light cleared, did you use an exacto knife to cut off the pinstriping around the light? or did you just not stripe it all together?
FormulaNERD
03-16-2005, 10:52 AM
i ran a pin stripe around the border of the reverse light, if that makes sense?
yeah, i saw yours, that looked pretty nice
Youngblood77
03-16-2005, 05:44 PM
I just never striped it, but I did the same thing Form did, and ran one pass around the light, covering the ends of all the horizontals. It's the cleanest looking method IMO. G/L Sno. B)

Hey for anybody that has done the "touch-up" strips at the end of the horizontal strips or around the reverse light, (what Eric did), how do you get the pinstriping to curve so nice around the reverse light spot? if that makes sense.... thanks

^^BTW your custom cut out look GREAT Sarah!!!
anyway...i'm going to go out and get white pinstripes for my white '04. i thought that looked damn good!!
i'm either going to cut out my custom logo for myself (artist sig) or do the olds symbol, i can't decide!!
(how many rolls of the pinstripes are needed for the mod?)
cutelilcntrygrl
03-29-2005, 10:27 AM
It shouldn't take more than 2 rolls.
Stealth, just heat it up a little bit and use your finger nail, if you have any. That's how I did mine. Or you could *very gently* run a razor blade over it. Just be sure not to cut the light. And then just peel the pinstripe off.

Good call Marie ! :thumb: Exactly what she said...and her 2nd suggestion will work for you aswell.
Just to further emphasis on what Marie had suggested:
** Unroll the stripe, then with the paper still covering the adhesive, apply a SMALL amount of heat using a hairdryer set on low, from several inches away. If you can feel a difference in temperature, that's enough. The added heat should allow you to stretch the stripe a little more, thus making it easier to negotiate tighter corners with the vinyl. If you don't want to cut the vinyl while it's on the light, this is definately the way to go.**
Hope this helps ya man. If you need anymore help or clarification, don't hesitate to ask....that's what we're all here for. :thumb:

I'd "chalk that up to" crappy pinstriping material. There are SO many brands out there, it's truly tough to pinpoint the good and/or bad ones. Sorry that mod didn't turn out for you Sarah, I'm with Kurt...it looked truly badass while it lasted.

wow looking through this, all you turned ugly tails into nice asses heh... thx to YoungBlood i know exactly what it looks like on a black alero.

i have two questions. the first one has anyone had problems with the police because of there pinstriped tail lights? i don't think it is illegal but i just wanted to know before i go and do it. the second one is what color should i get. i have a tan colored car but if it helps my windows have 15% tint on it and maybe i should get black to match the windows. do i just go to autozone to get the pinstriping?
Youngblood77
05-12-2005, 06:31 AM
I've yet to have a problem with any authorities with regards to my tail lights, but I supose that totally depends on how strict your local laws are. If your windows are tinted, I'd say the black would look nice. And for your last question: The pinstriping is available @ almost any auto parts store, just make sure you buy 2 rolls, as 1 roll one do the job. ( I know that from experience, and I felt goofy driving back to town with the job 1/2 done. )
cutelilcntrygrl
05-12-2005, 06:37 AM
^ Glad to see that I wasn't the ONLY one who didn't buy enough the first time  I was taking back roads and side streets to get back to Advance so that nobody would see me
But anyway, yeah I'd say black would look good on your car. Let us know how it goes and if you have any questions.
One tip real quick though, make sure you go around the outsides with more pinstripe, like others have probably done. I didn't do that and now mine are starting to look kinda crappy. I'm gonna have to do that soon.

yeah... it does look pretty good huh? looks like i'm going to be switching mine too black....not a lot of people on here liked mine white!! Good job BTW....did you do it the long way and use something to make sure it was straight? or did you eye-ball it?
cutelilcntrygrl
05-13-2005, 12:37 PM
That does look good.
Yeah Zee, change yours to black.. looks much better imo. No offense but the white just looked weird. It made the rear just blend together, if you will.
I think, since I'm going to go over the ends of mine, I'm going to get a thinner pinstripe and add to mine to give it more of a black out look. What do you guys think about that?
smlzalero
05-13-2005, 12:38 PM
^Don't do that just because some people said it didn't look good! I think white looks way better than black on a white car. The black makes the tail lights look enormous.
cutelilcntrygrl
05-13-2005, 12:39 PM
But with black windows, the black tails would just look better. White just looks too plain... imo.
Kurt, just do it and post some pics.. we'll vote on it. lol
