View Full Version : Humming Noice in the front

I have a 2004, and I noticed a humming noice in the front the other day. I thought it was the brakes but they are fine. I checked the back brakes and needed the pads and rotors. So I changed those. The noice is still there. Sounds like I have those over sized tires on a truck that is lifted. I was thinking about changing the rotors in the front as well. Do you guys think that this is the issue? or something else?

Is it more of a grinding sound that increases with speed? Sounds like a wheel bearing is going out on you. Start looking for shops with good prices and/or lifetime warranties.

+1 for a wheel bearing, its a common issue for these cars. It's a pretty easy repair, my current best is changing one out in 40 minutes. If you plan on keeping this car a while get one with a lifetime warranty......you will be changing it again.

Does the sound increase or decrease depending on which way you turn?

sounds like oversized tires? possible flat spot...?

The sound does increase with speeds. Should you replace both sides then?

When I turn the Sterring wheel to the right it sounds like the right side gets louder!

Pretty sure its not the tires. I rotated them last night and I still have the same sound in the front.

Jack the car up and do a wiggle test.

Just try and wiggle the tire back and forth.

It is the bearings. If one side is bad, the other was soon to follow on my car. But do not throw money out the window that you do not need to. Find a shop near you that offers a lifetime warranty on the bearing. That way when it goes out again, you pull out the receipt and pay much less.

When I turn the Sterring wheel to the right it sounds like the right side gets louder!

That would indicate that the drivers side wheel bearing is most likely the one that's causing the noise, or at least most of it.

How long did u wait until you repaired it? I wont be able to do anything until a few more days. I gonna have to drive the car. This started last week.

It will be fine to drive on. But the louder it gets, the worse it is getting. If you never repair it, it will eventually seize the tire up.

EDIT: whoop whoop! Post 1,000!

Mine were going out for a month or so. All the sudden while driving it went from the normal growl to a banshee screaming. I ended up changing them in the parking lot of my work... Because thats where I was.

This has only been an issue for about two weeks now. But the car sat for a week, I am having it looked at on wednesday.

the funny thing with wheel bearings is one second they can be fine and the next it just drops right off and your stuck with more damage.

or it can last over a year and not do any damage just noise

I had both hubs replaced this morning. Took about 2 hours from the time the wheels and tires were taken off until they were put back on. Car drives so much better. Actually steers better too.

Thanks everyone for your help.

So...it was the hubs? Or wheel bearings?

bearing on the passenger side. You could hear them. But on the Driver side the hud would spin free about a half turn then u had to almost force it.

If you were in park then that's totally normal, it has so much free spin then the transmission lock kicks in.

Why would it lock in the hub?

How many miles on the car before they went (I still have the originals on mine at 30K miles). If you don't mind saying how much did you pay for this?

The hub is linked up to the CV shaft, and if that didn't lock in park you have a problem cause your car will go wherever it wants when you're parked. I know with some rear wheel drives rather than a lock in the transmission the rear wheels just turn opposite each other in park, therefore it can't move.

The car has 129k on it. The sound started two weeks ago. I got the parts for 166 bucks and I was charged 100 bucks to do it.
