View Full Version : Wiring Gauge Overlays...

So I got a set of the speed hut gauge overlays from a member here, and from what I have seen most people just run the wire to the cubby light... I was hoping to put the switch in the little pocket to the left of the steering wheel, and if I go with the cubby light, there is not enough wire to run back that far...
My question: Has anyone wired it directly behind the gauge cluster off the original harness, and if yes, which wires were spliced for it to work? I also believe back there will give me a cleaner look overall...
Any and all help is appreciated

what switch are you talking about? the dimmer switch built in?
what i did was turned that dimmer up all the way, tapped into the grey wire for the interior lights, then installed. they will dim off the factory dimmer

cut out the in line dimmer when u wire it to the gray wire on the cluster u you dont need a second dimmer.

I was more looking at keeping the switch as it changes it from blue to green, so depending on my mood etc, I can change it up... I see a concensus on the grey wire for the dimmer, what about actual power and ground though?
thanks for the input so far...

Just a quick update... Apparently I am really bad at wiring... I have tried using the grey wire behind the cluster but they still do not work... There are 2 wires on the gauges, a red wire and a black wire... I am at a complete loss at this, and I know I am probably over thinking this completely and missing the simplicity of it...
Please help!!! Which wires do I use from the factory harness to splice for the power and ground?

The Grey wire from the cluster is illumination (12v DC) hook that to the red wire. Then hook the black to any ground.

Cool thanks Phil... I figured I was over thinking!!
EDIT: I finally got around to getting this done... Used the grey cluster wire and the black ground from the trip reset button on the left side of the dash... Works great now :) Thanks to all who helped!!
