View Full Version : is this normal? Cutting out

I took a right turn way too fast, but maintained control of my car and the engine cut out altogether. all the electrical stayed on, but all the alternator powered stuff (steering, for example) went to manual. but when I parked it and restarted, it started as if nothing was wrong...
what was this? was this just simply "all the gas was on the side away from the pump during the turn so no fuel = cut off"?

ive had it where if i was in reverse and went into drive too quickly, then it would stall. maybe its similar?

could be oil pressure sensor detecting no oil pressure so it shuts the car off to be nice
dunno

something short on the PCM?
it was probably starved for fuel when you turned hard all the fuel was thown to one side of the tank and leaving nothing for the pump to suck up, it has happned to me before on exit ramps, how much fuel did you have?

I was thinking more of you have a bad ground or one that is not connected?

I figure the pump is on the right...was a right turn, therefore all the fuel sloshing to the left. make sense??

Allthough the engine doesnt use up all of the fuel in the lines that quickly. theres prolly close to a half of a gallon in the lines and fuel filter.
But thats def not normal. I take very hard turns and have never had it cut off on me.

^ that's why I'm asking. it only happened this once.

when was the last time you changed your fuel filter? or ran some injector cleaner?

lmao...filter...prolly 50k miles. injector cleaner probably 25k miles ago. I am so against spending money right now too....

A fuel filter is like 13 bux. Worth it especially since fuel filters are supposed to get changed like every 30k or so.

Every 30k? What do u drive, a diesel? Lol. Anyways, ion's comment about lost oil pressure is something I agree with... Does the oil light come on ever? You can try a manual gauge to ck it.

i dubt our cars ahve a feature like that. if that was the case you would hear more: "why is my car not running?... oh the oil was low" im thinking maybe more of an electrical issue. or even just a fluke. yeah check your oil. but maybe go to a parking lot some night and try and duplicate it.

lol noo the haynes book says 30k and i believe it. I changed mine after 20k and there was little blobs of black gunk seeping out of the old one. lol
I guess it depends on how clean the gas is in your area.

it actually does recommend it every 30k all vehicles are like that.
and yes the oil light is actually on our vehicles my 2000 alero does it when I first got it and took some turns too sharp ( low oil it was on the add oil mark )

im just thinking low oil pressure probably wasnt the reason it "just shut off"

i still personally think its a ground somewheres on the car

*holy shit* CANDACE!!!! Miss ya babe!
I think it's the oil pressure thing. took a similar turn today and the oil light dinged at me but no cut off.
And we must get some pretty clean gas here. I haven't changed the gas filter in a really long time and I still get ~27mpg. Still do my 90day/3k miles oil/filter change though.

Hey randy ;) hope your well! But my car did that oil light dingy thing when u turned quickly too.. and we had an impala in the shop that did the same thing. I later blew up my motor (oops) but the impala had a failing oil pump.

Im pretty sure the engine wont cut off by itself because of low oil level or low oil pressure...

Well on the side of oil pressure problems and such, when in revers at idle with the steering cranked all the way the my engin will drop down to .5 rmps ish then bounce back up a few times before it levels off. Could be related? Not really my area of to much knowledge. I have the 2.2btw. But buddy also has the 3.4 and has talked about your exsact problem happening a few times.

i agree. if that was the case engines would be smart and not run when you forget to put oil in them :p

do you have an automatic? if so i belive being in reverse will max your line pressure put stress on your engine and then to top it off iwth the steering on lock (cranked) your probably also dead-heading the pump which is really bputting stress on your engine causing the low RPMs.

That makes sence... Yes it's auto. Thanks!
