View Full Version : Problem with my truck...

Ok, here's the deal... I have a 1995 Dodge Ram 4x4 truck with 166k, 5-Speed stick with a Supercharged V8 which I did not install, it was on there when I bought it. I purchased the truck for $2500 around 3months ago and has ran magnificently until now, took it to the shop the day I bought it and got a tune-up and they said there wasn't anything wrong with it other than it needing a routine tune-up, which is all I've had done to it.

Besides the S/C, everything is stock engine wise. I first noticed my problem around 3weeks ago. There will be times it runes fine, and then I can shut it off and then the next time I fire it up and take off and when my RPM's get between 3500-4k (Right before I shift to second) it will spit and sputter like I'm running out of gas. It will also do the same thing up to mid-high 3rd (Cruising comfortably at 35mph at about 3400RPM) as well as low 4th, and as for 5th gear I dunno cause I haven't taken it on the highways since I've been having this problem.

First time I popped the hood open and took a look, I noticed my distributor cap was loose and thought that might be the problem so I tightened it up and that didn't fix it. So then I thought it might be my fuel filter or my fuel lines so I changed the fuel filter and checked all of the fuel lines and they are good and immediately after I did that I went and topped off and ran 2 bottles (The guy at O`Reilly said 2 bottles because of the size of my tank) of Injector cleaner just in case, and that didn't work either. So then I thought it might be my fuel pump, Took it to my buddies shop and he checked it out and said the fuel pump was almost new and working fine. So now I'm thinking that it might be my injectors which I have no clue how to check them myself.

Other than my injectors I have absolutely no more ideas of what it could be, so this is where you guys come in... I need some ideas cause I'm fresh out of 'em. I'm sure Injectors on my truck aren't much different than any other Injectors so I was wondering if anyone could give me a small walk-through on how to check my Injectors myself so I don't have to take it to the shop again?

EDIT: I'll throw some pics up tomorrow of my truck for sh!ts and gigs, It's a beast...The guy I got it from fabricated a bad ass one-off front and rear bumper, The front bumper is like a brush guard on steroids. It's mostly made from 1/4 inch diamond plate steel with some 1/2 inch steel pieces on the top of bumper and it's welded straight to the frame. The back bumper is just a normal beefy 1/2 inch steel with a couple Eye hook holes welded on to like hook a chain on or something. One thing I thought was kinda cool is that the guy I bought it from gave it a Rhino Lining paint job and I'm guessing it was self done cause there is some over spray on the wipers, I've never seen it done before though, Lol... Funny part is, there is Rhino Lining on everything but the bed! Hahaha!

Here is a general idea of what it looks like with my failed impatient attempt with diamond plate... Everything on the bumper is 1/2 inch steel, the rest is 1/4 inch diamond plate steel....

I haven't had it tested yet, I think I will stop at O'Reilly on the way home from work to see if it throws any...

I'm thinking electrical possibly. With the motor so modified, you have no idea what's going on with your wiring harness and if all the necessary sensors are even hooked up properly. We see this a lot when things have been swapped. Maybe a cam or crank pos sensor? I don't know, its a shot in the dark. It's a 95 so it should have obd II. Get it scanned, like everyone else is saying.

Also, if an injector really is toast, no amount of fuel injector cleaner will help (in my experience) you are only fouling your plugs with all that crap.

i still say get the codes read first so your not chasing your tail. but was the light on when you first got the vehicle? was it having this issue before the tuneup? if not did it start having the problem as soon as you ha the tuneup done?

That's a good point, esp since you found your dist cap loose.

Not showing any SES light, taking it to get it tested here in a little bit anyways... It started about a month and a half after the tune up...
