View Full Version : guage sweep mod (VID)
i did this earler today and i love it,
the beeping is my escort powering up and the last beep was my phone telling me it was dying, and i know the tach is a little twitchy but its always been like that, also the dash lights do come on with the key not with the headlights
enjoy awsomness

awesome! i've always liked how grand am's do this and so far the only way i ever got my alero to do it is if the battery is nearly dead!
lol
all i did was cut the orange wire on the plug going to the guage cluster, thn ran a switched power wire from the fuse box and connected that to the orange wire comming from the plug.

Are you basically saying you connected it to an accessory wire?

So the orenge wire eh?... Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. Also I like the red needles and back lighting.
Those needles are off a passat.

Theres no reason I couldn't just run the wire to the cubby light for it to work is there? That way just keeping everything more central instead if having to run it out to a new fuse.
edit: yes, it works great, needles sweep anytime the interior lighting comes on. its pretty nifty.

unless you only want the cluster to work when the interior lights are on. i dont think it would work that way anyway since it would almost be run in a closed circuit since the cubby light wiring has the same wiring to the cluster. it would be the same as running the orange wire (hot at all times) to the gray wire (interior lighting) in the same cluster pack leading into the gauges.

Its working good so far. The positive to that light is grey, the needels sweep any time the interior lighting comes on, and they have enough of of delay that when starting they only sweep once. So far so good. It only took about 30min to do it all so if somthing starts screwing up it wasn't to huge a loss of time.

I'm with Luckilero7. How bout a how to. I have so many questions! How did you get the red dash lights? Did you get your A/C controls the same color. I wanna do this!
ok guys i did not use the light power to power this mod, i taped into the fuse box to a SWITCHED power source ( i chose the wiper fuse), and ran that wire to the ORANGE wire at the plug of the guage cluster, if you use the light (grey) wire the guages will only work when you have the lights on, also the reason my dash lights come on with the key is because i wired it to do that, they DONOT come on with the lights, every time the key is on the dash lights are on
OFFICIAL WRITE UP

this explains how to make the gauges sweep on start up,
first take the gauge bezel out, then remove the gauge cluster,
unplug the connector at the back of the gauge cluster,
find the orange wire and cut it, leave plenty of wire at the connector so you have room to work with it,
next run a wire from the fuse box that is switched with the key ( i used the wiper fuse), you can tap into the power wire for the radio if you have a aftermarket radio
nxt you connect the wire you ran from the fuse box to the ORANGE wire going into the cluster connector,
then connect the cluster and re install it to the dash and reinstall the bezel,
turn the key on and enjoy full sweep on startup,

the ac controls are the same color as the dash
the bulbs are stock.....
but i took the cluster apart and applied a light filter film to the back of the gauge face, its actually called light filter gels and are available at most photography shops

Ya, I found out the intiror light was a bad idea. The sunroof fuse is a good one to tap into though.

lol told ya so.
I figured a better and easier way to do this altogether. If you look at the pinout of the cluster, the orange wire is in A12. There are two purple wires, but the one you want to use is in A2. This wire is hot in accessory/run or start. Splice the orange wire into that purple wire and you are good to go.

I figured one of those wires up there would do it... And I spent an extra 5 minuets running over to the passenger fuse pannel for the sunroof. Gash dang it.

hmm.. I wonder if this will work in the Malibu?
So in summary, cut orange wire, splice connector end into purple wire..
Right?
correct, to be certain use a volt meter and test the wires, but the orange wire on the alero is the power wire for the cluster

Hmmm ok i understand now. You need to use a switch source that goes dead when the car is starting.

Idk about dead, but you want to use wire that only has power in ACC or ON. I used the one I did bc it was right next to it, and only had power in ACC or ON. Idk how you would keep the trip meter going.

I just did the mod, i'm gonna see how long the trip keeps the memory. If it's 5 seconds or so, it will be easy to put in a relay with a normal set of close contacts. And they will open when the car is starting, and close back.

I used to use my trip gauge all the time so i could calculate fuel mileage...I will just write down fill up mileage on the car until someone figures out how to make it work with the gauge sweep...would it be possible to have the trip wire connected to the constant without anything else?
yea but then the trip would always be on

That's what the orange wire does. I'm toying around with ideal of getting some diodes, and a 9volt battery. Just enough power to keep memory
super cool , shall be done b4 breakfast lol

i just wired it the sunroof fuse for the power source to the Orange wire. works fine... could be the difference between your 01 and my 03. I know there gauge pods arent interchangeable.

Could you explain how you did this by any chance?
did you use a fuse tap? Those tend to worry me...have heard bad things about them long term?
I'd love to do this if there was no drawback :d

I dont have a sunroof either but the fuseholder still has power. I took a 5 fuse and cut ad sodered it to one side so it would still be fused.

At least I know it IS do-able though!

there other power sources with the same imputs to them and stuff. doesnt specifically have to be the sunroof one..

I did it using this method and it worked perfectly. Takes only about 10 minutes, longest part is getting the dash pieces and gauge cluster out!

does anyone know were i could get a wire diagram for my gauge cluster?
i have a 99 alero GL
i wanna find out what wire light up the gauges when the lights are turned on, i have reverse glow gauges in, but ones the cars turned on they come on because i didnt know what wire on the cluster was for the light so i just ran it to the ignition power on the cd player

Most of this type of thing has been covered, the search button can find most things that you need...it may not be for the cluster wires, however it is how most people do it

i loooked up if there was like stuff on google, but a bunch of diffrent shit come up everytime
and i just finished my gauge sweep mod not even 10mins ago, i love it, just curious what does that orange wire do anyways haha?
and thanks for the help
still figuring out how to do this alero mod forum stuff

01-24-2013, 02:34 PM
orange is the constant power...you are just rewiring it so that both are switched power...ideally to have everything work you would have to find a way to have a small amount of current go through to remember the trip data, but not enough for it to not sweep
wombatslayer
01-24-2013, 05:51 PM
just for a quick rundown... you take the gauge cluster out, get the orange wire, and either tie it into the purple one, or extend it into the fuse of something, say... power windows? i don't have a power sunroof so i'm trying to think of something similar.
03glgold
01-24-2013, 06:22 PM
basically, I just clipped into the purple wire...you could still use the sunroof as the sunroof fuse is still active and in place
wombatslayer
01-24-2013, 06:30 PM
i'm gonna gave to give that a try. i don't use my trip. but, if i did want to keep it, i would extend the wire to a fuse right?

I think that is hit and miss but some have done that and retained the trip meter, however it is totally reversable
