View Full Version : Hood Scoops and Stripes

So I'm looking at some non functional hood scoops to put on the Alero. I masked off the hood to show where the scoop would go on one side. I would do the same on each side of the hood.

The front horizontal line closest to the headlight is 24" from the rear horizontal tape line and the end of the vertacle tips closest to the headlights are at 28" long. The width I masked out is 13" as shown.

I'm wanting to know if you think I should go with the 24"x11.5"wide or the 28"x13" scoop? I think I like the larger ones best.

Also, I'm wanting to to a custom stripe. I want it to run from the front Olds logo to the Olds logo on the trunk lid. Each logo will be the beginning and end of the line similar to the Intrigue 442 concept.

What do you guys think?

I want my stripe to run up the center of the car from one existing logo to the other similar to this.

http://www.oldsfe3x.com/intrigue442concept.htm

I showed the masked off scoops and stripe on my car here.

I say keep the hood stock, but tell people that you had put scoops on there, realized it looked awful and felt shame for putting fake crap all over your nice shiny car, then you went through the trouble of removing it all and having the hood repainted. They will be impressed.

Ohhhhh! I like that haha

To OP; Non-functional means no use. As in no use in spending on it.

Haha. That's not quite what I was looking for but amusing all the same. Still, this is much cheaper than the bubble hood which is also non functional and should add something to the bland hood.

I think the stock hood looks fine...it has just enough protrusion to make it some what sporty.

Oh. I looked at the post after someone installed it and I saw a lot of comments about opening it to make it functional so I thought it wasn't.

The site I saw the Intrigue 442 on also stated that those weren't functional but either way with some cutting i can make them functional once I find something I like. I am also looking at the duraflex univeral scoops if i can get one for a decent price.

Yeah! but it probably a car for dirt racing , demolition derby or something not road legal that for sure...

Anyhow as for a scoop if i ever put one it will be functional for sure why add something that you're not gona use?

I thought about it when i first bought my car , i wanted to order a scoop & then get a hood at scrap ward make the hole put the scoop blah!, blah! & when all done switch it with the original on the car , since this will be a "cheap" mod to do i may still do it one day , maybe?

EDIT: forget to add this -->http://www.oldsfe3x.com/intrigue442concept.htm
I first thought it was an Alero then realize it was an Intrigue/Aurora but man! i like the front bumper & the hood on this 442 concept
i would put that on my Alero for sure

That's the look I'm going for. I may have to have it custom made to look right though. I am also considering the green Alero OSV Mustang style hood. I got an estimate to have one fabricated out of my original hood for $360. It would vent but not feed air directly to the box.

Look at this hood. This is the 442 look that I am going for along with the Razzi kit and GAGT side skirts and moldings and I want to incorporate that awesome Olds logo stripe one way or another on my car either from bumper logo to trunk logo or on the sides higher up than what they did on the prototypes.

Well, I got hit and run in the rear quarter before that happened. I do have some bodyshop connections so I went to my buddy and gave him the $1700 that the insurance gave me, $500 cash, and a quad Calais that I put a rod through the block....lol.

I also help him dissassemble the car, and did all of the taping myself. I created a template on the computer first that emcompassed the logo and the start of the stripes. I had a reverse cut out of vynal and stuck that to the car, then taped the rest of the stripes off of it. Then pulled the vynal and tape off when it was dry!

Okay, so I've heard a bunch of "don't do its" on the hood scoops. I probably will still do something to the hood, just not 100% sure what yet.

What about the stripe? I think it's pretty cool to incorperate the existing logos on the car into a stripe. Otherwise I was going to do something similar on the rockers like they do on Mustangs or starting high on the fender and running to the end of the quarter panel like the striping on the new Chargers...If only I had photoshop... I may try to GIMP an image together of what I'm thinking.

So I am having some trouble remembering how to remove things in paint, but here is a VERY rough mockup of my car with the stripe I'm thinking about.

I want it to begin like the Alero/Intrigue 442 with the Olds logo high on the fender, with the body of the stripe running under the windows and after the rear door turn into a fading block pattern similar to some of the new Charger/Challenger stripes.

I know that things add up as you can see from my ongoing list. I will have over $9000 rolled into this car when I finish the work that I've already bought parts to do.

I was wanting the look of the Alero/Intrigue 442 as far as hood scoops goes, but I'm starting to reconsider. I may do a photoshop rendering at some point after my kit is installed. Otherwise I may just wait until I can afford a spyder hood or something? I'm not fully sold on the scoop idea yet... Just kicking it around. I need to figure out if I care enough to have the hood fabricated. I was quoted $400 to fabricate my hood with real cowls.

I don't think my paint will be "custom", I am just painting everything back to the factory color. The custom decals will be vinyl so that I can peel them off later if I decide that I hate them or want to change them up a bit.

Unfortunately, I know that you do AMAZING quality of work... I mean, I saw that beast of an Alero you had... Nearly flawless! I wish I could afford you. I'm working in the $2000 range. I found a small custom shop nearby who has been in business here for 25 years that will do the kit, full paint, minor hood and door repair (seam seal) for $2000 and they will have the car back to me in 7-10 business days.

I don't want to low ball you or anything like that, but I've got 2 non Maacco shops that have decent looking work on their books and references and both quoted me $1500-2000. Keep in mind, this is NOT to paint the trunk, door jams, engine bay ect. This is exterior visible panels only and I take the lights out, window and side trim and door handles off before I leave the car. But it also includes repairing my chips and seam pop on my hood, and digging out the very small amount of rust on the inside lip of my rear passenger door and seam sealing it again as well.

ok so its kinda like a half of a job in a way, no door jambs, no removing of some parts, just kinda freshing it up , and thats fine if thats all you can afford

but keep in mind if you ever decide to do anything else there is not only the factory sealer, e coat, base and clear, now there is primer, more sealer, more base coat more clear, which in turn will cost more money to take off what another shop did

also keep this in mind too body and paint labor up here is 48 a book hour, restoration is over 100, custom work too, so pricing down in the sticks is going to be different then coming to chicago

i really dont think im that expensive around here my pricing is competitvie to allot of shop in the area, the cost of material has sky rocketed through the roof so i have to price accordingly

but best of luck to you

That's fair. Really, my paint overall is in really good condition. My hood has chips and my roof and deck lid have some scratching but otherwise everything is still glossy and whole.

My thought is, I need the kit painted and it will be, but he won't be painting underneath the kit. This means that the hood and fenders will all be painted as well as the top portion of each bumper cover and the top half of each door and quarter panel. In the long run, I could buy a new dog house and bumper covers for the car to avoid having the double paint work if I decide to drop the cash on a REAL paint job later.

I want the kit to be installed properly and the paint for the kit to be matched. On another note... I was told that a two tone would look sweet on my car. I can only think of using black or forest green as a two tone. One guy suggested gold. Any thoughts bdy?

i like blue and silver, black and silver, if ya do black do black ontop and the green bottom but with a matte clear over the whole car, would look fuckin amazing, having a pinstripe to break up the 2 colors, not a tape stripe a real hand painted stripe

thats my thought, but think again before you drop 2k on a half of a paint job

I want a color to go with the current Dark Bronzemist Metallic on the bottom if that would look good. I am fine with one solid color.

This shop is charging $1500 for the freshen up, rust repair, hood repair and kit install.

I'm going to look and see what a matte clear looks like.

So, if I paid you 5k and you had my car for 4-6 weeks, are we talking about a complete tear down, repair and repaint or would any repairs be additional?
