View Full Version : Got A Problem

After having my cd player and subs sitting in the closet for 3+ months, I decided to get it installed today. Well, it didn't turn out so well. I'm pissed. First of all, I lost the wiring kit somewhere when I was moving so that raised the price of the install from 50 bucks to 175 including labor and taxes. Then they tell me the box won't fit in the trunk but it fit in there perfectly on the way to the shop. That's minor because I can get a new box but anyway, I didn't get my subs installed. They mounted the factory deck in the trunk behind the lining. Everything looks clean and they did a good job, appearance wise. But now, when I turn the car off, the radio goes off and makes a really loud static noise. I don't have any door chimes or anything like that. I thought the kit was supposed to let me keep the chimes? Plus, there is NO bass at all. Granted, I know the factory systems don't have much bass but now I have NONE at all. Treble rebel. I talked to a friend of mine and he looked at it. He knows quite a bit about car audio but he isn't familiar with the RDS and all that. Is there an easy fix to this that my friend may be able to do or do I need to go back to the shop and practice some country kung fu on their asses? Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

why do people refer to RDS as it's some magical sound enhancement. all it does is retrieve station text information while listening to the radio, and it doesnt even do it very well.
so you had your box in the trunk on the way over and then they said it wouldnt fit? you should have left and went somewhere else.
and you say you had the stock radio mounted in the trunk... just curious why.
i'm not sure about the static noise you're getting, or why you're not getting chimes.
and i know you arent stupid, but did you try adjusting the treble/bass? and are the crossover frequencies adjustable?

Probably should have. But the place I went to is the same place that I've always went to, and all my friends have as well. It's a very trusted and well known shop.
and you say you had the stock radio mounted in the trunk... just curious why.
Doesn't make sense to me either. I thought with the wiring kit they used, that I wouldn't need to have it mounted. But I'm not the one that gets paid to do this kind of stuff so I took their word for it.
and i know you arent stupid, but did you try adjusting the treble/bass? and are the crossover frequencies adjustable?
I read the manual before even touching the deck. I adjusted everything how it should've been. My friend double checked the adjustments and said that it's right.

hmmmm, so is the stock radio in the trunk or like a cd changer? it's not making sense to me.
and whats up front?

The factory deck is mounted in the trunk. The cd player I bought is up front. I'll go take a picture of the trunk.

maybe someone else can give me a hint of why this was done.
yea... get pics. i'm curious.

I'm not sure how well this pic will show it but it's mounted on the drivers side.

ok, well i dont know what to tell you, i have no idea why they'd do that.
the factory HU is just gonna get messed up right there. and i wouldnt try to play a cd in it either.
again, i'm still confused... it's back there, and connected and everything?

The factory head unit is mounted in the trunk with a wiring harness connecting it to the aftermarket deck, somehow under the carpet and door panels in the car, I think. I have no idea really where it's connected to but I'm assuming it's connected to the cd player. I'm just as confused as you are. But this (http://invision.aleromod.com/index.php?showtopic=2028) is the thread that I was directed to when I first bought the cd player back in May. Maybe that will help you understand it more. Myself, I have a monthly miagrane and I'm just ready to say f*** it. It just pisses me off that I paid $175.07 (can't forget the 7 cents) to have a cd player installed that I already paid $165 for and the sound quality isn't worth a poop. Let me try to explain the static noise. You know fuzzy sound you get from a tv when the station goes off the air? That's what I'm getting out of my speakers when I turn the car off. It's not constant. It goes off when I open the door but still, it shouldn't be doing it. Even I know that.

Also, the factory deck is mounted pretty solid. It's not going anywhere. And I don't think it would be a good idea to try playing anything in it either. However, the lights are still on, on the factory deck.

try the info in this thread for help (http://invision.aleromod.com/index.php?showtopic=2028)
down the page you can find the class 2 modules, then you dont your stock radio.

hmmm sounds like the RAP is on with the stock radio, but since your sound is coming from the aftermarket deck, it's just static till you open the door.
i think i'd rather sacrifice the chimes and put the stock deck in your closet or up on ebay.
luckily i dont have RAP or a class II chime system.
sorry, i'm not being of any help, i seriously dont know what to tell you, hopefully jabartram can help.

Yeah, that's the same link I used earlier. So, I'm thinking I should just take it back to the shop, tell them to take the factory deck out and just not have any chimes. Any suggestions?

Get one of the class 2 modules, it will keep your chimes and everything will work the same, chimes are louder, so put it somewhere its muffled, I'm using the Metra-GMRC-01

I was kinda hoping there was something I could do without having to buy another one though. Or at least something I could do until I can afford getting a new one. I guess I'll just be opening the door before I turn the car off for a while. :(

hey jabartram... with the class II module, she wont need the factory deck in the trunk right? so she can have it taken out, and live with no chimes till she gets cash for the classII module.

The class 2 module is what lets you still have the factory chimes, without the factory deck. and it's only like 50.00$ I'll loan you the cash if needed?

1. go back to the shop and make them fix it.
2. put stock deck on ebay...sell...
3. with money from stock deck, buy class II module.
there, problem solved...

I think you should go back to the shop and get your money back...they don't sound to professional. They put the stock radio in your trunk because you have to relocate if you want to keep your chimes or you can live without them. Don't change your box, if it fit when you took it why waste money getting a different one. They didn't want to put it on for some dumb reason.
If you do get the metra thing it will make your chimes a little louder but you'll get used to it. Mine is stuck behind my radio and it looks like a little 4x2 inch speaker.

I got the cash to do it if I wanted to but I just don't want to spend more than I already have on this. I think I'll just go back up there tomorrow and make them do it right. For the money I paid, they need to do the job right. I was rather pissed after my last post on this topic so I went outside and unhooked the damn thing. lol Don't worry, my brother checked my work and said I wouldn't fry anything with what I did. (He's an electrician btw)

Yeah, once you have the right harness, you should be fine. Relocating the stock headunit is a bunch of crap, if they use the right harness, it's not an issue.
I'm so glad I have a '99 so I don't have to deal with that crap, nor do I have to deal with the Theft Lock / Pass Lock garbage either.
Best of luck getting everything sorted out.

I tried taking it back to the shop on Sunday but there was a big car show so they were closed for that. Anyway, I printed out this thread as well as the other thread that was mentioned here. They open at 9 in the morning so I will be there waiting on them, papers in hand. This will be fixed tomorrow and my subs will be installed or they will get to experience the wrath of a girl with a bad case of PMS. ;)

These GM radios are the most annoying to work with. They place a security system on them but no thief is going to steal the thing. Here is the bad news. It is only going to get worse. GM passes the delco units through our factory for final testing. The sytem that communicates with the radio is called a CAM. Some cars use the chimes, engine service light, dome light, and ABS light to comunicate with the radio. Some say the air bags do but I have yet to see a model incorporate it. The 2003 models have a serial number saved into the radio eprong from the CAM. This means that the radio will not work in another vehicle. It can be cleared by a technician, but be aware of this before buying or selling a radio on ebay. Here is the kicker. GM's new model of xm ready HU's will have a serial port that allows the factory or dealer to change the firmware. This means that one model year of a car may have multiple variations from a identicle radio. The good news is that mp3, aac, decoding and so on can be uploaded for a quick upgrade to the head unit.

Just thought I would update everyone since I've had several people ask me about this. I took my car back to the shop, they attempted to fix it but fried my cd player. So I bitched and bitched enough that they refunded me all the money and bought me a new cd player. It's a Sony Xplod or something like that. Looks nice but it's still not my Pioneer. I checked the price value and there isn't any difference so it's all good. Gonna take the money from that and get my subs installed PROFESSIONALLY either this weekend or next week. And I'm going to take the Pioneer back and get my money back so I can get something else I've had my eye on lately. Anyway, it pays to be a mean ass sometimes. ;)

how about we set aside a day where everyone meets up and helps Marie!! that way i can get my car lowered, get my subs and amp put in, get my corners cleared........... lol and the chimes are kinda helpful for me because i have a bad habit of leaving the keys in the ignition. :(

so you leave the keys in the ignition...you turn around to lock the doors using the remote and realize you don't have them...OR, you go to unlock your apartment ot realize that you dont have keys... But I guess if you like them, its on you..they personally annoy the piss outta me...and we will have a day to help Marie..it will be in October, i'll let you know when but make plns to come and you can hit up the flashlight drags with us, then we cna come back, drink beer and work on your car...simple

I'd love to dear, but a drive to Kentuky doesn't exactly fit my schedual. ( not to mention the fact that i'd have to explain to my wife why I took the trip in the 1st place ) " Uh, hun? I gotta go down south for a couple days to go help out a cute little country girl. "
yeah, THAT would go over well.

brad, i don't have a remote. i guess the gx didn't come with one or they just screwed me. :( flashlight drags... i saw that thread but i didn't look at it. i'll check it out now. it'll just depend on when since i'm already going to myrtle beach in october. gotta make sure the funds are there, ya know? ;)

Should come to the St. Louis meet, subs and amp would have been put in and corners cleared in under an hour and a half. Then ya could have helped us drink beer.
Although, I think we didn't need any help doing that, we did a damn good job by ourselves.

Well as you know, I would've came to the St. Louis meet if I wasn't leaving for the beach next week with the family. Plus, I'm Daddys little girl and I don't like being too far away from home with my Dad being in the condition he's in.

sounds like you got a great deal, they couldnt really do anymore for ya, free deck and wiring harness, plus your old deck back which you can warranty and all of your money. PMS power lol. Lot of hassle though, was it worth it in the end to get the extra stuff?
cutelilcntrygrl
09-28-2004, 10:30 PM
i guess it was worth it but it would've been a lot easier to have it done right the first time. i made like 4 or 5 trips up there, which is about 25 miles from my house. but i learned my lesson about the place so yeah, you could say it was worth it.
