I swear my friend Tony is bad luck. Every long ride I've had with him something happens. Last week my belt shredded randomly on our way to the movies. Last year ASS my turbo was nearly falling apart.

Today we were almost home, about 3 miles away. Had to pull over because I basically ran out of fuel/fuel pressure. My #4 injector o-ring wasn't seated and I was spraying fuel everywhere. Fixed it easily after waiting for things to cool down. :rolleyes2:

Pretty sure it was leaking during the weekend here and also the cause of my goofy high RPM behavior.

Other than Greg, Andy and Probably Bruce... Did any of us in an Alero make the entire trip without ANY surprise issues on the way to or from?

I had a surprise wheel bearing on the way up and an HID failure and svs light surprise shortly after we began our trip home.

Sleepy's sunroof broke.

Eric's stereo, battery and starter went all haywire.

Ion had a cap and fuel leak.

Jawa had a tranny line blow.

So maybe Manwhore, sleepy and I were all just tired last night?... My HID went out on my passenger side. As did my high beam after I hit a bump and briefly (split second briefly) lost all power. The car kept going but when power came back on... My passenger light was out! The markers and led strips still worked though. We pulled over to mess with it. Three of us (who all own Alero's) didn't realize that each headlamp has its own fuse! So I drove home with one light.

Today, I use my new multimeter to test connections. I was getting a reading from the harness for the light, but not the internals. I had assumed at this point that the inner assembly wiring had somehow gone bad. As it turns ou, my high beam bulb in the passenger side is blown as was the fuse for that headlamp?... We learned this only AFTER sleepy and I tore my headlamp apart, then drive to his place and back to get another stock housing to replace my euro housing backing that I thought was messed up. After cutting my wiring and splicing into the new housing... Still nothing. At this point we assumed faulty wiring, but decided to check my DRL fuse to be sure that wasn't the cause. When that was good, we looked over the fuse panel and noticed that there was a fuse for each headlamp individually and sure enough... One was blown! Only after destroying my wiring and having to redo my headlamp... Bah!

So for all of you other noobs out there... Double check the simple things first before you get crazy.

My car is doing some wired shit with heating up. I looked under my hood when I got to New York and where the tube that plugs in your T-Stat housing had a very very small leak but I tightin it and thats fine. My low coolent was coming but drove it today and didnt come on but I smell a little bit of coolent when my heat is on. My temp gauge stays pretty much under half untill im sitting around in some traffic but I don't see a leak with my eyes and smell coolent when the heat is on. Anyone?!?!

sleepyalero
06-17-2013, 01:53 PM
Well the sensor might be fked up when you pulled the whole thing out lol. Other then that the coolant smell could be whats buring off the motor from when it was leaking.

Made it home in 11.5 hours.

Car was running super lean in PA. I got 34.6 MPG from Lansing to Verona, PA, then From Verona, PA to Langhorne, PA (had to take Adam home first) I got 41.2 MPG!!!

Of course I was running about 16.5 on the WB the entire way home

Well I can still say, fuck you mr Hybrid! My V6 did the same as a Pruis was doing in 2003 :p

mfuller
06-17-2013, 05:54 PM

I'm going to download it into the car on Wednesday and see what happens, the car is sitting until then anyway

[ion] C2
06-18-2013, 07:42 AM
Yeah so my car is like night and day now.

My fuel leak and vacuum leak must've started before I left, which is why the car was acting so sluggish and not shifting properly. Now it's responsive as hell and way faster. Damn. Wish I had it like this at ASS.

I'm tempted to throw on the slicks and go to the track next Wednesday and get my low 12/high 11 slip finally. I guarantee it will hit around there.

I don't think It's a good idea at all, unless you can find a way to keep it greased the whole time. I guess really it depends on how big the tear is, how much you're losing and how fast It's coming out.

I don't know if someone would warranty something like that, most likely something caught it while driving and ripped it.

For around $15 you can get the repair boot, not too shabby imo.

Take a needle greaser, slip it under one of the band to get some geese in there. Should help out since you lose some once in a while.

My auto trans slips under load and I expect it to blow up when I launch with slicks. I drove 3 people around today weighing the car down and the trans stuttered sometimes even on slow takeoffs.[/QUOte

Are you going to get launch control or anti lag when you get the five speed.

Best way to launch in a stick and get traction is to slip the clutch. Basically you rev up to desired RPM, dump the clutch, the push it back in about half way, maybe a little less, you'll have to play with it a little. You'll get traction and launch really hard.

My cousin showed me that neat little trick in his ranger.

[ion] C2
06-19-2013, 08:59 PM
It seems like launching wouldn't be too difficult. I figure I'll keep the RPMs not too high to start with, and just dump the clutch and get into the throttle not too slow not too fast and go balls out after that. I'll play around and learn what works the best though. Hopefully this guy gets back to me on the Texas car and I can go pick it up and get this swap going.

2nd to 3rd can be the most complicated quick shift, ill be honest ive missed a couple of times. But havent in the past couple months.
Yeah I can see how I could slip up there pretty easily.

Also, i dont downshift unless i really need to. Like coming up to a stop, leave it in gear till rpms drop to like 1200 or so, clutch in and stop. Remember brakes are cheaper/easier job then a clutch. ;)
I typically disengage the clutch anytime I expect to slow down significantly, and shift to another gear depending on what I want to do afterwards. I don't usually leave it in gear during braking, I dunno if that's just a personal preference thing or if you're supposed to do it one way or the other.

Secord
06-19-2013, 10:11 PM
I try to stop with the clutch whenever possible, never letting the engine rev past 2k on the downshift. I usually let it float around 1250rpm. If it is a hard stop I depress the clutch and just leave it in gear most of the time while I use the brakes.

03glgold
06-19-2013, 11:01 PM
while I am not a professional, You should technically always downshift as you slow down even if you don't let out on the clutch so that you are prepared if something happened with your brakes

Far as launching hard, well it depends on your traction. Normally at the track if you launch at like 5-6k and you have slicks you'll probably break something with fwd. if you launch to low like 2k then you'll more likely bog off the line. That is what test and tune is for. Depending on track temp and tires and how sticky the launch pad is going to determine where you launch. On average when I have raced with a manual on street tires and its a fwd around 4k was not bad. Even 3500 was decent.

As for downshifting, I have always engine braked. Coming up to a light start downshifting keeping rpm under 3k. I drove my Hyundai for 168k on the original clutch with engine breaking. It does not hurt your car if done properly. Now where people have problems is riding the clutch too much when letting it out or not revving rpm up to about what they will be when you let clutch out for the next gear. Which when people just push clutch in and downshift they will normally ride the clutch more.

My previous clutch vehicles got a min of 75k on the original clutch.

The hardest thing on a clutch and will make it go out the fastest is riding it or burning the clutch. This is all amateur mistakes that people make. Which is why a lot of people don't downshift and engine break cause they don't know how and was never properly taught.

sleepyalero
06-20-2013, 07:46 PM
Match rpms when downshifting, sitting at 1500 and going one gear down rev it up a little higher then 1500 before letting clutch out.

[ion] C2
06-20-2013, 09:25 PM
But what's the point of the extra work in downshifting? Why not simply disengage and shift to the gear you want when it's time to accelerate? Why screw around with the gears while slowing down, seems pointless. I get 40mpg and have no problem doing it the way I said. No need to keep engaging the clutch over and over as you go down the gears.

tw0123
06-20-2013, 10:48 PM
the point to downshifting has already been mentioned... what if your brakes fail? what if you have a car coming up behind that doesn't slow? how will you get out of the way if there is enough room while you are in first gear? simply put, you cant... you need to be in control of the vehicle at all times... thus downshifting a manual... autos do it for you so you do not have to worry about it... if you don't want to drive the stick properly, stay with an auto...

[ion] C2

You have an e-brake.
Shift it into a low gear.
Or do what everyone with an automatic would have to do, turn towards something to slow you down the safest.

what if you have a car coming up behind that doesn't slow? how will you get out of the way if there is enough room while you are in first gear?

You're in neutral, not first. You're waiting to choose a gear as you slow down with the clutch disengaged.
Shift it into the gear you want if you decided you must accelerate before making your complete stop. I don't see the problem with leaving the shifter in the middle until you decide what gear you want to be in when it's time to move faster.

you need to be in control of the vehicle at all times... thus downshifting a manual... autos do it for you so you do not have to worry about it... if you don't want to drive the stick properly, stay with an auto...
Autos do it because the program says at certain speeds and loads to be in certain gears. Not because it helps you brake more quickly. Fuck you and your pretentious professional 5-speed driver mentality. I'll drive a manual if I like, and I'll shift to the gear I want to when coasting, when it's applicable.

Letting ur car coast downhill in neutral will not save gas. (EFI cars provided)
letting ur car coast in gear (clutch disengaged) and above idle rpm on the other hand will cause fuel shutoff and hence save gas.

Well that's retarded then.

I love it when newbs think burnouts and smoking up the tires on a launch equals power. What it equals is loss of traction and slower times.

My Delta can do a nasty burnout, and sometimes spin the tires off the line (rear wheels are 60 lbs a piece) but with it's 140 HP engine putting down about 120 HP and he car weighing in at just a touch over 4000 lbs, it's turning an impressive 18.27-18.80 in the 1/4 mile.
