View Full Version : Sneak Peak at the new system

The upgrading is underway again, 600RMS is not enough. I am planning on competing in the Street Stock category <2000RMS, 1 battery, etc.

So the new amp is the t1500bdcp, does around 1800RMS @ 1ohm, doing the big 3 and running power/ground from front to back with Knukonceptz Kolossus Kandy 0 Gauge capable of 375A. Since I can only have 1 battery in the stock category, I will be getting the XS Power D3400. Currently I don't have a subwoofer picked out, but it will most likely be a Skar Audio ZVX-12 or Sundown Zv3.

I think thats everything.

Rockford fosgate amps are underrated they can do up to a 1000 Watts rms over the rated rms. Great looking system.

going green eh? tired of the white and red theme or just different accents in different areas? I noticed you switched your headlights from white to red... what about the tails?

S8track16
09-20-2013, 11:09 PM
the green is mainly for under the hood, the tails are still white but I'm trying to make my own LED tails that are colour matched

Also, I got tired of the white plastidip, it was impossible to keep clean.

One step closer, got the DC Level 4 12" Dual 1 Ohm Subwoofer, underrated at 1400 RMS. I still need a XS Power D3400, if someone you know is selling one, let me know.

Aeroforce interceptor scan gauge... monitors something like 100 parameters on the car and then get an oil pressure sensor since the low oil light will be blocked... the interceptor gauge has a dual display so you set one to volts to monitor your system and the other display can scroll through the other settings :) i have one and its awesome!!

I can't install it yet, I still need to make a box, one for daily, one for spl. Also need sound deadener for the entire trunk and possibly roof of the car, and a few other little installation pieces.

oh very nice the DC subs are underrated i almost bought one but got a JL w7. Hope you have an amp and electrical system to power it. i am going to ask some people if they know anybody with an xs power battery for sale. I am a member on a couple car audio forums.

S8track16
10-03-2013, 08:39 PM
What size of W7 do you have? And ya my amp should do well, its the BDCP model, rated for 1500 rms @ 2 ohm, does around 1700-1800, doing the big 3 and all other wiring with 0 gauge (5145 strand).

If you find a battery let me know. thanks.

S8track16
11-10-2013, 01:38 PM
Got the d3400 installed. Had to make some modifications to the battery mount since this battery is wider and longer. If I didn't have an aftermarket intake, the battery wouldn't fit. Still a tight fit and the battery terminals just slighty hit the hood when closed. Also installed an intellitronix voltmeter, 14.6v when the car running, drops to 14.4 when I hard the sub playing.

Finally it has been a bit warmer (-3C compared to -30C) than usual and I was able to get some work done. Pulled the amps and sub out of the trunk and put one layer of knukonceptz kolussus sound deadener on the entire trunk floor and some on the sides. The deadener makes a huge difference and it should when it weighs 1lb per sq. ft. Then put the carpet back in and routed the wires through. Also put the gauge pod in with the voltmeter.

You should have done the same. Calls for less attention

Actually turned on my car for the first time since September, with the d3400, car started up right away. Installed the tweeters/ crossovers and put my 4 channel amp in to test it out. I'm pretty impressed with the crescendo mid/highs so far, they are extremely loud and clear. Also hooked up my ddm tuning 8000k HIDs. Installed them, turned on the car and nothing, had the switch the plug the opposite way for some reason, then they worked fine. I just checked the brightness this evening and the HIDs are brighter than the high beams.

S8track16
02-15-2014, 08:59 PM
If you have a factory airbox, it won't fit. I had to cut the one end off of the mount completely as well as the metal mount from underneath the factory airbox.

02-15-2014, 10:44 PM
LOL figures thanks though :>) I had been looking at the XS batteries as an alternative to the Optima. Maybe a smaller one will fit. Got a grand coming to me in tax refund thinking of 17 inch rims and tires. Won't take but about 400 to do my 4x6's, amp, deck and back up camera. I figure I can save about $170 per week and when the refund gets here in 3-4 weeks have enough to do all of it. Below are the rims and tires I' am looking at. Thinkin of going 17 due to low pro's maybe looking funny with stock height. Thoughts on that? The rims also come in the last ones thinking silver would look best with my tan color.

If you are going to get aftermarket rims, you could also just get some lowering springs as well, rather than the complete setup. I have eibach springs, I would have liked the front to drop a bit more since I have a lot of weight in the trunk, it balances out.

tw0123
02-16-2014, 09:43 AM
Brandon... i had the same issue with the eibachs... even the specs show the rear drops more than the front... i switched to h&r springs because they offer the reverse... front frops more than the rear for that aggressive stance, but with a heavy system it balances it out!!

negolien
02-16-2014, 02:11 PM
thanks what's a rough estimate on price? I wouldn't need any shocks or anything just the springs?

Is that a crossover between the two amps? Do you only have one battery? Could you get a shot of your distribution box? Finally do you use any kind of processors or just the head unit, amps, crossovers and speakers?

S8track16
04-22-2014, 10:50 AM
Is that a crossover between the two amps?

Yes, they are audio pipe crossovers from eBay. I'm using these so I can hook up multiple speakers to my t400.

Do you only have one battery?

Yes, I have the XS Power D3400 under the hood and no batteries in the trunk.

Could you get a shot of your distribution box?

I'll post a picture up a bit later.

Finally do you use any kind of processors or just the head unit, amps, crossovers and speakers?

I currently don't have any sound processors but my get one in the future if I get more amps and speakers. For now, the deck and settings on the amp are good enough.

S8track16

Here is the distribution block, it's a Knukonceptz KNF-60. I have a run of 0 gauge (power and ground) going in, and 4 gauge going to the amps.

Awesome possum thanks bud :p I think my only issue is finding a block that's one in and 3 out. I was also going to go 0 gauge power and ground and maybe 8 gauge for the 3 amps since they will only be 45/150 100/300 and 500/1000 I think 8 should be ok shouldn't it?

You have any issue or thoughts on pressure from sub or subs beating on the cone of the 6x9's?

As a side note hahah my alts right on top of the motor should be super easy to swap out for the HO coming. You have any issue with yours or is yours still stock?

S8track16
04-29-2014, 01:18 PM
The port is forward and close to being sealed from the trunk so there won't be an issue with the 6.5s.

I wish my alt was on top, I still have the stock one installed but I have the 250a singer alt waiting. Not sure if I want to attempt to change it myself.

So how exactly did you "tune" your box for your desired hertz?

S8track16
06-13-2014, 08:58 PM
I used a box calculator app and sometimes Torres box calculator. You input your desired outer box dimensions, size of wood, subwoofer and other displacements and then you can determine the inner dimensions of the port that helps you achieve the tuning frequency you want as well as the net box volume. For my case, I wanted the tuning fairly low (30-32hz) and needed the box to net 4 cu. ft. or 2 cu. ft. for each sub.

So are you going more for looks than comp? Port looks a little thin for the height, drivers are a little to far a way from the port. 3/4 MDF isn't as stiff I ever like it to be, last box I had in the Alero was 4cubes with 1.5" of MDF fiberglassed on the inside. Did 143.6 at the dash at 40hz. I have to say all your work looks very clean. Grounding to the strut?

First off, the bigger the speaker the more directive or focused the SPL is, this is how line array speaker systems work. The F factor in the line array is how close the drivers are. The closer multiple drivers are the more they act as one big driver. The port acts like a speaker but on a bandpass. I'm not trying to go into to much detail.

Also important know that the electricity in the car flows from the negative to the positive. That being say about the negative, what do you think is going to allow more power to flow, all the metal in your car or one run of 1/0? That's why it is so important to upgrade grounding around your battery and alternator to the cars body.

Batteries don't produce power they only store power, an alternator is the only way get more power. Don't bother adding a second battery unless you plan on running your system with the car off for extended time. A second battery will only cause extra stress on the alternator. Also Watts/Volts=Amps so 2000w/14.4volts= 138.8 amps, the stock alternator is only 105amps = dimming lights and stressed battery.

Check out my album http://s215.photobucket.com/user/afugy/library/ I ran the speaker department for an audio company.

After looking at the port again in the pictures, I'd like to add. It's hard to tell from the pictures but a ports height to width should not exceed 8 to 1 at any point inside the port, exceeding 8 to 1 can cause port noise, me personally I would take it even farther to 6 to 1 on anything under 40hz. The wedge thing at the back of the port is doing nothing for you, if you wanted wind that's one way to get it.

I hope you don't take any of this as insulting, I'm just trying to help. You really do have the skill to build it.

S8track16
07-03-2014, 05:23 AM
The run of ground from the front to back is to connect the second battery up once I pick it up. The alt and battery are grounded to the chassis but I wanted the amp grounds to come from the battery since I had problems which chassis grounds in the trunk before.

Also, with the stock alt, I have never had any issues with light dimming with the xs power battery. So are you saying that I should run 5000w without extra batteries because it causes strain on the alt. This doesn't really make sense based on what I have heard from people that do this for a living. As a side note, my Singer 250A alt is arriving in a couple days so that won't be an issue.

Another thing, how does the wedge in the back of the port apparently not do anything? People do this all the time to direct the airflow from each chamber so they don't interfere with one another. If that wasn't there, the air produced from the subwoofer would try to enter the opposite chamber.

A lot of the info that you posted seems contradicting to what I have been told and learned from people who have built many systems over the years.

If you ground to the strut tower you wont have a problem with grounding.

You can't direct airflow in the port, you DONT want airflow at all. You want sound moving threw the port. If wind speed is over 10% the speed you will have port noise. Those people that have done the wedge have no idea how sound waves work. Making the port area smaller with the wedge only cause the waves to scatter more after the wedge causing destructive interference in the port.

I've been doing this for 16 years, worked for one of the largest sound companies in the world as the Head of the Speaker Department. Last install I did I used 2x 8 inch subs using the back seats to make a 6th order bandpass on 400 watts and still do 132db on the mic in a 48 chevy.

Nice work!

I don't think the distance between the drivers would cause a loss of output at very low frequencies, like below about 50-60 hz. At 100-200 hz, possibly, depending on where they cross over. Outside the car up on a stand they might lose some output, but not in the confined space of that car.

It makes no difference what direction the current flows, the result is mathematically the same, and depends on the resistance in the circuit. It is usually easier and better to ground with a short cable to the chassis, if the grounding point is chosen carefully. If you have a negative cable already run to the trunk from a battery near the engine, just connect another negative cable to a point in the trunk and see if the voltage increases. If it does, then disconnect the longer cable and check again.

That port is a very complex situation with the two enclosures feeding into one opening. The linear distance between the backs of the drivers to the large port opening can affect the tuning, as well as the mass of air in the port. Boggles the mind! I guess if the computer app used a model specifically for that, you should be ok. The other variable on the port is the length of the duct, which can reinforce or cancel certain frequencies. That can be an advantage, if you choose an optimum crossover point. If the port does not work out there is a fairly easy way to correct it, but I'm interested to see how it sounds now, and if the box actually did achieve its target tuning of 31-32 hz.

First of all, the alternator is working and voltage is stable at 14.6v.

http://i1314.photobucket.com/albums/t573/S8track16/20140715_133637_zps1cd23433.jpg (http://s1314.photobucket.com/user/S8track16/media/20140715_133637_zps1cd23433.jpg.html)

When I first got the alternator back and installed it, voltage was once again at 17-18v meaning that the regulator wasn't working. Apparently, the light and sense plug that goes into the alternator only had a voltage of 5v rather than the 12v that is required to turn the regulator on. So I tapped into a switched power fuse and made sure the plug was getting the required voltage. Turned the car on, and the alternator was working fine.

I'm not sure if the plug only needs to be 5v for the stock alt or if I had a short in the wire somewhere. I figured I should let everyone know my situation in case you run into the same thing when changing to a high output alt.

Afugy, are you sure that the peak spl should be the same as the box tuning frequncy?

Well, I'm not sure it should be the same. There are many possible alignments for those or most other woofers, for one thing. Some of them involve equalization of the extreme low frequencies to bring up the output at the box frequency. While it is possible in theory to get flat output below the driver's free air resonance (in this case about 40 hz), I would have expected a drop in output at the box tuning frequency in practice.

Afugy
07-24-2014, 08:48 PM
Lower frequencies are harder to get greater SPL but to tune your box to 31 and peak at 41 is way off. I've never trusted any of those box programs. I've used them to make 3 test boxes and not once did they come out right when I tested them on Smarrt. Peaking that far off means the frequencies that you tuned your box to are being canceled out, from A. speakers being poorly spaced to your port (should cause it to be that far off though(note. if the box was firing into the trunk it would not matter because you turn your trunk into a 6th order bandpass)). B. Splitting the port cause air speed to exceed 10% the speed of sound and you're just getting port noise below 41hz.

AleroB888
07-25-2014, 04:22 PM
The thing is, if in fact the peak bass output is around 40 hz and drops off below that with an f3 of about 28hz, this project result does appear to closely follow a known alignment. (I know the O/P used a higher box volume, but that can work better in practice).

If you compare the manufacturer's specs with the data in the chart, it tracks well with the predicted ratios for a No. 7 C4 vented box.

Total Speaker Q Value (Qts): .489
Free Air Resonance (Fs): 37.9 Hz
Equivalent Compliance (Vas): 27.38 liters
Suggested Box Volume (VB): 1.50³ ft

NO. 7. Type .....C4
Ripple.... 0.13 dB
f3/Fs........ 0.729
fB/Fs.......0.829
VB/Vas......1.372
Qt..............0.466

Not only that, I think for normal music input, around 40 hz is a good place to have strong output. I'll bet that system rocks! Anyway, the O/P built a solid vented system that has to be considered a success.
