Original Post

Bought this 2001 5-speed GX 2.4L from a dealer 2 hours away for $1400.

Dealer turned out to be an idiot and the car had a brake line leak causing me to have barely any braking power the whole drive home.

Windshield was cracked. Got a new one.
Had brake line replaced.

http://evilhare.com/ns/aleromodBlueCar/1.jpg

The wheels/tires were also taken from some other Oldsmobile and were a horrible size. The tires were so large that the inside section of the tread was completely shaved down due to contact with the strut. No shit the suspension makes noise (dealer told me). Put wheels from red car on to be safe.

Nice color. I wish you picked grabber blue though.
Light blue looks ugly. It would've came out like DOHC_tuner's abomination (http://evilhare.com/ns/Skittles.jpg).
I wanted it to be a non-Alero color, but for it to look factoryish. I love this blue in person.

deceiving after telling me he fixed the brakes. tires were worn to the steel on the rear. could've advised me of its unsafeness after the title was handed over when he knew i had a 2 hour drive home. guy acted like a master mechanic when in fact many things were just covered up and hacked together.

whats the plans for the old body?
sell the car when the stock engine from the blue one gets put into it

you are off in every way in that...it is going to be the automatic subframe as he swapped the motor to the manual car and got a manual so he could have the manual tranny. His car is a 2.4l and while it is mechanically the same transmission as the ecotec, it has a different bell housing which is cast to the transmission

well you could uh... lower it? get some lowering springs!

I also use 225/50R17 tires which are a little taller to fill the gap a bit more.

Chris, how much are you looking to get out of the red car after motor is swapped? if its super cheap i might want it. let me know.
I'm trying to make money back from all this I've been dumping into this project. I'll be cleaning it up really well overall, and sell it to some random person on craigslist. I'll be selling it with the intention to get $1k out of it. Engine would have 132,000 on it.

Waiting to get this in.

http://evilhare.com/ns/aleromodBlueCar/29.jpg

Haven't done too much lately, been busy. :|

Next week I'm off for 2 days and will be completing the swap. Need to modify the downpipe as I can't seem to get the turbine into place anymore. I wonder how long it's been that way and I've had an exhaust leak due to misaligned v-band flanges. I can't even get it to bolt on with full access to e verything, how did I do it 3 times with the engine still in the car?

So I'm going to redo a small portion of the downpipe to make everything fit perfectly.

Next week, pull engine out of blue car, install clutch in blue car. Install engine into blue car. Install engine into red car. Reassemble/reinstall everything.

I didn't see where anyone pointed this out about the rust spot you showed in front of... looked like the rear wheel... those areas on our cars are rust magnets. When I wash my car I spray water up into the holes where mud, snow, salt, etc linger and can cause rust damage. So far I just have a few pitted paint spots with rust, so I'm doing pretty good, besides where the deer decided to play chicken with my car...

sleepyalero
12-20-2013, 02:08 AM
Actually water sits in there as well. It has a drainage issue so wether you wash the car or drive in the rain..water gets in that spot and can sit there for days.

Never thought about that, I guess in that case we could add some holes but then again it may just attract more dirt and make it harder to clean. Not to mention weaken that part of the body structure.

[ion] C2
12-23-2013, 06:50 AM
HID of course... why would you use anything but after spending that much to get a proper projector? I had HIDs before, but of course now these use different bulbs, so I'm getting another, better kit.

These were made by a friend that does this full time. I'll be posting information on them along with all his options and pricing and see if anyone's interested in a 5-person group buy.

sleepyalero
12-23-2013, 07:03 AM
I might depending on cost.

I know you said pricing and options. Just saying I'd like to know what projectors he would use... clear lens or fresnal lense? For me clear lense is wanted. back when I wanted to do this I was wanting TSX projectors.

Also if you could list projector options/pricing and what bulbs each projector uses would also help.

It's still just a thought. Like I said depending on the price I might....

[ion] C2
12-23-2013, 08:44 AM

That's right.

Headlights will happen. Group buy of 5, with free demon eyes in your choice of red/green/blue. Tired of everyone disappearing when headlight options are hinted at being available. This guy is a friend I've had since like 1st grade and he's not going anywhere. I will make a separate thread about the headlight details when my car is done and I'm not stretched so thin with everything that's going on in these next couple days.

btw, do you have a front stb to go on there as well, or does the piping get in the way of it? I have one on my 5 speed and its a pain to check the clutch fluid level if needed!! so far I have been ok with mine, but my mechanic swore a storm when he had to change the clutch and bleed the lines... then he took it off hahaha :)

Yeah I have custom strut tower mounts so it moves the bar forward and out of the way, but it blocks my oil cap so I have to undo one side to raise it up to take the cap off. Got annoying when I put in a quart a week for the last year and a half or more. Fixed that issue.

Whats left to do?

intercooler mounting
all charge pipe installed
modify bumper to accommodate intercooler thickness
boost/vacuum hoses finalized and connected
finding and installing a belt (345K5 is too small for no A/C no bypass pulley, will try next size up)
wiring primary O2 sensor in
wiring boost gauge
wiring AEM wideband sensor to gauge and to PCM for datalogging
exhaust welded together with new flexpipe, new hangers
write tune
bleed clutch

It's gonna be faaaaast. Can't wait.

no the trans was constantly slipping under load, it was faster at ASS '12 but still not to its potential. over the last year or so when i had 2+ passengers it would slip a ton trying to just take off from a light at a slow pace.

yep but getting time off work to do things has been the issue. shop's closed on weekends and closes an hour after i get out of work on weekdays. i like to go slow and check everything over to make it all perfect too. next week it should be running.

Lol it's so tall... are you putting in a short shifter? Mine feels much more responsive with the shorter throws...
i know i used 225/50R17 tires so they're a bit taller. i'd need to get different spacers and probably go back to a 45 series tire to lower it any more because it already rubs on turns and suspension travel. minor things to change in the future.

ya i have a short shifter and will install it when i feel like it. i want to drive it as is first when everything works before fooking it up

supposedly you have to modify shit with the shifter to make it fit I hear, people have to dremel out things or have issues getting it into certain gears. right now the stock shifter is the smoothest one i've ever handled and I can shift pretty damn quick with it. 450HP will keep it responsive enough for now.

tw0123
01-11-2014, 02:36 PM
I can atest to that ... it's a bit stiff to get into first and was a bitch to get in lol... i used a sharpie on the cables to ensure they were still lined up properly... the reverse clip is also notorious for tearing the boot as it's tight to grab reverse...

There. Good as new. Just gotta throw on some JB Weld.

http://evilhare.com/ns/aleromodBlueCar/58.jpg

I want to put a 3" v-band on so I can disconnect and dump it, but this was free and quick so 2" at the stock piping was it.

http://evilhare.com/ns/aleromodBlueCar/59.jpg

Hilarious to see a v-band on the stock resonator.

http://evilhare.com/ns/aleromodBlueCar/60.jpg

Mmmm. :awesome:

http://evilhare.com/ns/aleromodBlueCar/61.jpg

Bled the clutch, it works. Started it up a few times, worked fine. Fuel leak at the FPR. I apparently forgot an o-ring on the return line or something. I'll fix that tomorrow. It also has an exhaust leak at the 3" v-band on the downpipe because the flange was warped to shit when it was welded. I said it would leak. V-band flanges seal flat to flat. He said it wouldn't because the clamp would flatten it out (yeah okay :wtf2: ). Whattaya know, it ticks and leaks there.

So tomorrow I'll fix the fuel leak issue and hopefully drive it around and verify it's good. And hopefully confirming that the leak is at that v-band and having a new one welded better.

added exhaust hanger to eliminate stupid clunking
Alternator wiring is screwed up, easily remedied tomorrow.
Didn't find the source of my fluid leak yet, but will tomorrow.
They're gonna weld on a new v-band flange to replace the warped one.

I drove the car around a bit today. Feels really good. Clutch is smooth. Turbo sounds nice. It's gonna be quick. Sure will be fun to drive.

This is what's been leaking all these years. An engine plug with teflon tape. I picked up some good liquid thread sealant and will reinstall the plug this afternoon and let it cure until I drive it next Monday.

http://evilhare.com/ns/aleromodBlueCar/oilLeak.jpg

I also will cut off this stud down to the nut because it is way too tight with the v-band clamp in the middle of my downpipe and will cause rattling/clunking with any engine movement.

[ion] C2
01-16-2014, 07:14 PM
I cut off the stud, and that oil plug was the source of my mysterious oil leak all along. Wow. I tightened it and it completely stopped.

I think it's ready to drive for real now. I don't want to take it home unless everything is perfect though.

I'm making the shop weld the new v-band flange on because there's still a leak, I guarantee it. No one thinks it's significant or they say "it's so miniscule..." no it's not, as I drive it's loud and annoying as shit. I know what an exhaust leak at a flange sounds like, and I can't stand it.

Of course we're getting dumped on with snow. No driving til Monday-ish I'd say. I need to verify the clutch is actually working the way it should. I thought it was but when I was playing with the pedal today it felt different... idk we couldn't get it to really bleed much at all. It was very strange.

[ion] C2
01-17-2014, 12:44 PM
Minor tasks completed today:

re-bled the clutch just to make sure it's good
audio tuned back up the way i like it

New v-band should be installed today, and hopefully when I drive the car around Monday (weather permitting) everything will seem OK and I'll take the car home and do some minor tuning in the next week or so after I break in the clutch some.

Some HD videos will come soon.

Yes, they'll be either reconstructed from scratch or powdercoated black. That's on the very soon agenda. Here's the majority of the agenda:

finish wiring alarm/keyless entry
3" full exhaust (vibrant resonator and dynomax or walker quiet flow)
manual window lever trim, passenger windshield trim
paint wiper arms
install recaro seats
mill front wheel spacers thinner to be more flush instead of mexi-flush

from the looks of it, I would say the saab is between 35-40%... It is just enough to stop the glare and provide a good amount of tinting... I think it will also look darker on the dark blue of your car, probably just the optical illusion, but still...

Unfortunately, the KY Stage 3 6-puck clutch is not holding my power. There are 2 other bad reviews on j-body regarding them slipping. Very disappointing. One member says they replaced his clutch under warranty after 3 weeks of complaining, and then they said it may take 1500 miles to break in. He's at 2000 miles now and still slipping under load.

I just ordered a Bully Stage 4 6-puck clutch, yay, another $700. Plus install because I am way too lazy to be dropping the transmission.

Today I got the e-brake fixed, tomorrow the exhaust will be corrected (right now it touches the right side of the tunnel causing ANNOYING vibrations/noise), and Friday I will be getting 35% tint all around (except windshield).

That was some short lived fun.

Broke the turbo.
Need a new one ASAP. The TiAL housing, even using high strength M6 bolts, Nord-Lock washers, and Rocksett enginering adhesive, allowed movement of the CHRA/compressor side of the turbo independent of the turbine housing. Basically, you could wobble the compressor/CHRA side. Apparently it has wobbled enough to cause the turbine fins to collide with the turbine housing's interior, and destroy the fins and also overheat the bearing assembly (maybe) because it sounds bad. But it still spins a long time when the car is off, but you can see the side to side play now.

I didn't expect this turbo to last as long as it did. I bought it used and abused for half price. I used and abused it.

Edit: Ordered a new one.
http://evilhare.com/ns/turboOrder.jpg

Countermeasure for failure:
The CHRA will be tack welded to the TiAL v-band turbine housing. This will prevent the CHRA from moving and allowing for friction and wear of the turbine wheel.
I realize this is unconventional, but I do not need to ever take it apart nor do I need to clock it any other way than the way it's installed.

That sucks Chris, but at least you have another on the way.

[ion] C2

Indeed. I also e-mailed TiAl for recommendations:

Hello,

I have a GT30R SS 0.63 turbine housing that I’ve used on my Garrett GT3076R turbocharger for a few years now.

I have had to remove and reinstall the turbo many times over the years due to loosening of the CHRA/compressor side relative to the turbine housing. No matter what I do, how meticulously the turbo is installed, the CHRA becomes able to “wobble” and clock slightly back and forth after the first few drives. This has led to damage to the turbine fins as well as exhaust leaks at the CHRA-turbine seal. The turbocharger recently failed at the turbine wheel and bearings last night after a good amount of high RPM/throttle fun this weekend.

My question is: Do you have any recommendations to increase the clamping force of the CHRA to the turbine housing and prevent any future wobble/clocking after heat cycles?

Over the years, I have used:
1. TiAL Inconel bolts only
2. TiAL Inconel bolts and Nord-Lock washers
3. New TiAL Inconel bolts, new TiAL clamp plates, Nord-Lock washers, Rocksett engineering adhesive
4. High strength bolts, Nord-Lock washers, Rocksett engineering adhesive with everything assembled to extreme detail

The CHRA has wobbled and contributed to failure in all of these cases. For the most part, the bolts have not actually become that loose, they feel tight. It’s just that the provided clamp plates seem to not provide enough clamping force for the CHRA pressing into the turbine housing. Until all 6 bolts are removed and re-tightened fully, the CHRA can clock and wobble. Only at that very last miniscule amount of bolt torqueing does the CHRA become firm. But after a few heat cycles it relaxes and wobbles.

Basically I’m wondering if you have any advice to prevent this from happening on the new GT3076R that I ordered. Do you, can you produce turbine/CHRA clamp plates that are thinner in the flat section to maximize the clamping squeeze in the raised ridge that presses the CHRA into the turbine housing when the bolts are tightened?

My only idea and option I can see is to tack weld the CHRA to the turbine, which I realize is quite unconventional, but my turbo is never apart and never needs re-clocking from the original installation position. Please let me know if you have a better solution available.

Thank you,

Edit: What a surprise, they redesigned the clamps in Dec 2013. Too bad no one has any in stock.

Wonder if TiAL would ship me some direct. I'm sure the new design would help if not solve the issue without welding.

might just sell it and keep the factory shifter.

race me and find out if it matters that it's the original length :)

it's a "feel" mod, and a very, very minor aid in quicker shifts. i can shift plenty quick enough to snag a good time. a short shifter isn't gonna take more than a tenth off at most.

Hopefully I'll be able to go to the track this month.

Still hesitant, always nervous since the last time at the track was catastrophic. I like to have a lot of extra nest egg money sitting around in case of bad things, and I don't really have too much.

Going to tune everything proper and make sure it's safe. I've got a co-worker with a truck who said he'll bring a tow dolly in case something happens at the track. He'll film it from the outside, and I have a dash cam for interior.

Also, been averaging 22 mpg over the last month or so lol. I drive too spiritedly.

Cracked the turbo manifold significantly at a weld at the collector.

(No pic yet, this is just a location point-out on a picture from 2011)
http://evilhare.com/ns/crack.jpg

Couple months of hard shifting and wheel hop with nothing supporting the weight of the exhaust will do that, what do you know. No one would help me weld hangers and support. Well, now they will. Turbo manifold will be re-welded at any areas with evidence of cracks, and a support bar or two will be added to it. The exhaust will have multiple hangers holding it up as well, and I hope to have a nice sturdy transmission/engine mount to minimize the amount of movement/flexing.

Fun note: I've beat everything I've raced since the new clutch in June. And I've raced a lot of things. Kept even with a Lamborghini. Once I get closed and settled in with my new house later this month and the car is properly tuned, I'll hit the track probably in October.
