So, I am going down the road today, which was just gorgeous, about seventy-five degrees, slight breeze, sunny, and I had the windows down and sunroof open on my 2001 Olds Alero GLS coupe. I was approaching my destination, so I put up the windows (was going to leave my sunroof open), and POP!!!!!!! My drivers side window slides back down into the door at amazing speed, as I was surprised I didn't hear glass breaking. After trying to roll it back up, I said a few choice words, and then thought about what it might be. My guess is the window regulator, something that I have known was going bad in my car and was going to get it fixed this fall. Also, when I shut my door now, you can definitely hear something clunking inside the door. I need to get this done now, ASAP, and I can probably do it myself. Am I right in my assumption and how do I know the regulator is trashed and does any one have any pointers?

Thanks,

Jon

Okay...check the switch first any noise when you try to roll it up? now remove the 2 screws that are inside a plastic cover in the grip of the door....now pull off the door panel and check out whats going on. look for the regulator and where it is connected to the window. Has it been making noise here recently? From this point we need more info.

Most likely...its a common thing I am told....ebay has some cheap ones...but remember to buy a haynes manual from Autozone ($14) and remember to shop the internet first but ebay should be good

The plot thickens.....Haynes does not currently have a manual for a 2001 Alero

Any idea of where I could acquire one?

I've seen manuals on Ebay but I'm not 100% sure if I've seen the 2001. I've seen the 2000 though.

you dont really need the haynes manual........just pop the door off, pull the covering off, undo the bolts on the whole window regulator set up and pull it out.........it really isnt as hard as it seems.......i got the door off and popped my new one in in 20 minutes

If your car is still under warranty, bring it back to the dealer and let them fix it for free (that's what I did).

The same thing happened to me in my 99 Alero. The only difference is it happened to me in the middle of winter and I had to drive 20 miles on the highway to get to the dealer. I had to get a new regulator, but luckily for me the dealership provided it. Bummer dude!

 Ditto on it happening to me in my 2000 Coupe. I replaced it myself with one I got off of eBay. Alot easier than I expected! One of the thingys that go on the glass that holds that metal angle piece came off and I had to take it to an auto glass shop to have them shoot some of that black gunk they use to seal windshields and it set up and is tight now. Then I installed it. Really easy. Had to use of couple of pieces of wood to jam under the glass to keep it in the closed position until the glue set up on the glass and the regulator came in from the eBay seller. If you've got even a small amount of mechancial ability, you'll knock it out in a heartbeat. Of course the recommendation to have the dealer do it if it is under warranty still is the best bet. Good luck dude!

Mine haven't done that yet, but both of the front windows cease to function at random intervals (at least its still under warranty!)

What happens is that the plastic pieces that the window rides on, break and then you're screwed. Not sure what breaks them nor how mine broke. It's just cheap plastic. Prolly just a matter of time before my driver's side breaks. I must admit though that it goes up and down now really fast and smooth since I replaced it.
