Ok I went out and hand washed my car this morning and I didnt start it or move it. Then I went to start my car to run the wipers and all it does it crank it wont turn over. I checked the oil and the variuos wires for the spark plugs and such and everything is attached I hooked it up to my dads truck and tried to boost it over and it wont. all it does is crank and the check engine light is on while I crank it. When I stop cranking the SECURITY light is blinking, what does it mean? Anyone got any ideas.

Happens sometimes with mine. Quit after I got a new key. Your key might be worn down a bit.

i had that problem and it was the damn shifter. what i did was shift it out of park and put it back several times and it ended up starting.

The shifter makes more sence since I have a aftermarket knob on my auto maby it wasnt it park all the way but I dont remember touching the shifter before it started.

Mine pulled that crap on me a few times. When it just cranks and won't fire up and the security light flashes, the car shut the fuel off! The owner's manual says to see the dealer if that happens, something with the anti-theft stuff. Mine would also come on while driving sometimes, and the manual mentions that too.
Never took it in, usualy the dealer breaks something when the car would go in.
So I haven't felt like some dick who doesn't give a poop touching my car and breaking my dash. Hell, they'll probably try to sell you a new f***in computer!

it has something to do with the ignition switch or something...mine did this a while back, you just gotta let the car sit for 5 or 10 mins and it clears itself up....

Ok I went to my local GM Dealership and they said that in most likely my ignition and that will cost $170.00 to $180.00 dollars to replace it. so I went and had a keyed copy to see id that will help and if it doesnt I will have the dealership my dad works for change it out with his discount. Hopefully I wont have to but mostlikely I will have to change it eventually.

Yeah, I think my ignition is starting to go to. I took the key out and the accessories stayed on for about 10 seconds.

I have kinda noticed somehting like that, when I turn my car off my gauges stay lit for a couple of seconds and my battery light come on then shuts right off.

Yeah, my car does this crap all the time too. It's the passlock anti-theft system. I have read various places that there is a way you can disable this, but I'm not quite sure how. You have to let the light flash for 10 minutes, then start again and usually mine will start up. Sometimes my security light comes on when I am just driving down the road too!! Go figure.
One dealership told me that all I may need is a new key, however I haven;t quite gotten the urge to spend the money on it yet (I think it costs about $40).
I have had my Alero for 2 years (its a 2000) and I am starting to think that it is turining into a giant piece of crap.

Really 40 bucks for a key? I went to true value and got one for 3 bucks and it has been 2 days and it hasnt done it again.
