I used to own a 1996 Corsica with a 3100 v-6 in it. I sold it a week ago and I started looking for a new car. My only preferences were:
1. GM certified
2. 5-speed
3. 4cyl
4. Red, Black, Blue, or White
5. Better acceleration than my corsica.

I looked for three days for a car like this, testing cavaliers, sunfires, saturns, and even a neon. I couldn't find a car I liked and could also afford. Until I ran across a 2002 Red Alero coupe with a ecotec and a 5-speed. My first reaction was that this car weighed 3000 lbs, and that it would be slower than my friends 2004 cavy (coupe, 5-speed). But I drove it anyway just because it was in my price range.
This car blew my mind! It was noticably quicker than my old car, and it rode like a dream! Needless to say, I bought that car, for $8400 with 30,000 miles on it.
I love my new car! But I do have one question...I tested all of my vehicles at a spot near my house that has a black bump that is exactly 1/10 of a mile from the stop sign. I tested my corsica and got a 61mph run. I tested my friend's cavalier and got it to 62mph. But I tested my Alero and got it up to 65mph!?! How is this possible when my friends car has the ecotec as well? Did i screw up when I drove his car? Is it the gearing of my car? Traction control thingy? I don't know.
But I can't wait to continue posting messages here. From the searches I have done on this page, this seems like a knowlegiblegroup of people.

Welcome to the site!

It is gearing, better clutch, and other then that I don't know why, but our ECO's seem to be quicker for some reason.

And yeah, that engine can really pull once you get some mods, for some reason the '03 AND 04' engines are making faster times

From the GM site:
What they said about the Ecotec in the Alero: "Power:
You choose. The 2.2-liter DOHC 4-cylinder with 170 hp, or the 3.4-liter V6? No matter which you choose, when you put in the call for more power, there's always an immediate answer."

What they said about the Ecotec in the Cavy: "Easy to own and fun to drive, the 2005 Cavalier has distinctive styling and a spirited 140-horsepower four-cylinder ECOTEC engine. Choose coupe or sedan and get standard features like air conditioning, a PASSlock theft-deterrent system, and much more."

That seems kind of weird, because I always thought the 2.2 Ecotecs always had the same power, no matter what car they were in. Humm...maybe that explains why the Aleros with the Ecotec seem to be pretty strong. Anyway, welcome to the site. Have fun modding!

welcome, put in a CAI or a WAI, and an exhaust, cheap mods for more horsepower, you should notice quite a difference after you change those things.
