Hey i'm new to this site so this is my first post. But anyways I have a 2001 oldsmobile alero. Overall it drives fine but just from first to second it shifts kind of hard. Anybody know if this is normal for the 2.4L Twin-Cam or should I get my transmission looked at???

i'm assuming its auto, and the previous owner probably drove it hard. the shifting is adapted by the computer to how you drive.

i'd unplug the battery for 30 min, then plug it back in and idle the car for 5-10 min, then drive it normally the next few times, and the shifting should smooth out.

could also be due to wear on the transmission, and signs of a bigger problem, i'll leave that up to overdrive

Are you letting it shift or are you shifting it like a manual? Like I do most of the time :)

I just bought it a few months ago.......I let it shift automatically. I usually always drive normally so i don't race or drive hard with it so i'll try taking the battery of for 30 minutes and see if that changes anything

I do it at races at when I wanna keep my torque up otherwise it stays in drive but I only drive about 40 minutes a day on average just to work and back.

also the thing is i took it to a dealership and had it looked at. He tested it and everything and said he couldn't find anything wrong with it?? so i don't know what's up with it????

actually increased line pressure and firmer shifts are better mechanically for the tranny.... but not so good on the seals. it's a give and take type of thing.

Mine was doing that right after I got my Intake installed, it went away after a couple days.. try resetting the battery, and then if that doesn't work, make sure your IAT ( ) that goes to ur intake is in right, for some reason that made a difference with mine...

ya i'm probably gonna mess around with it a little bit today and try to see if theres anything to change it cuz' thats kind of annoying when it drives like thave even though it's not ALL the time.

Are these firm shifts happening when the car is cold, like sitting overnight with cold ambients, and then smooth out as the car warms up. If that is the case, then the computer is controlling as it is supposed to. Higher pressures when cold, to get things to shift on time and not fry the trans, as the fluid flows like honey when cold.

I also have a 2001 and it is somewhat like that when the weather gets cold. I've drivin about 70,000 miles on it so far.

ya I guess it is usually when it's cold. Cuz' I reset the battery and everything so that might of changed it a little bit but i'm not sure. So ya once it's warmed up it's usually a smoother shift.

^^ Yeah ok, that's how it is suposed to happen, you see the transmission has to run at higher pressures when it is cold. This is because the fluid get's less viscous as the temperature of the fluid goes down, and you need higher pressures to make things happen. The side effect is somtimes very firm shifts. At -40C you should see the fluid it is like cold molasis.
