That looks a lot better than the cheesy kits. I'll put my order in for one w/o all the switches:)

lol, I don't think it's cheesy. A kit like that will probably look just as good as the panel that Aleromaster has. btw - that's one thing you should remember, different switch panels might need different size openings for the switches

I spent $80 Building the prototype that you see here. Although $30 was spent on switches alone and I also had to buy a Radio Bezel from a junkyard. I will be getting a mold made when I move to FL to have it be a one peice Unit and hope to get it priced competively. As of now I would not be able to even estimate a price at this time because I do not have a price yet on the items to make the final product. It will obviously cost more that the plastic kits you buy at bestbuy because It will be a replacment for the entire Bezel. The one thing that I know of know is the kit will be availible with as many (up to 6 at this point) switches or no switches if youd like. A future version will posibly include a lighted design.
Any ideas let meknow

yeah both are nice.. silents is cool cause of the clear plexi glass or whatever it is holding the switches.. i think that looks kinda sweet.. and i've always loved those swtiches with the led inside.. actually aleromasters switches are sweet to.. those are my 2 fav type... my "switch panel" consists of a 4button flatpanel pad that is takes up like.. not even 1/4 of the slot so i can still use it for stuff.. its neat.. one day when i borrow someones dig cam i'll take some pics of everything

what about making the bezels with a slot for an eq, instead of switches?

Aleromaster
11-22-2003, 07:09 PM
I have considered adding a second DIN size slot to the design to allow the use of DIN size EQ's. May also incorporate an option for a 1/2 DIN EQ but that would not be for a while.

What do you guys think of gettting rid of the pocket below the climate controls in order to get a second DIN size opening?

johny_boy32
11-23-2003, 11:20 AM
it would matter what you want but if you want the second din...you almost have to get rid of it.....right?

Aleromaster
11-23-2003, 11:33 AM
Yeah you would have to get rid of it or leaveit just large enough for a couple cds

here's a pic if you wanted to see it. It turned out pretty good. still have some finishing touches to put on it(like primer the sides of the tv) I think i am gonna put some switches under the radio also. I think a 7" widescreen would fit in there perfect, but i really like the quality of my 6".

I wasn't referring to anyone specific when I stated "cheesy kits". I just thought it looked a alot better than the kit the Crappy City put in my car.

Do you mean Bezel? The pro's are your aftermarket Radio looks like it came from the factory, and I hope to be able to configure it any way you please. The cons are it cost a little more

Whatdo you guys think of posibly having it molded in carbon fiber. On an other note less than a monthbefore i move from this frozenhell

some of the kits are better than others I found this one is the best of the off-the-shelf type. Naturally I can't remember who makes it, but it's better than the 'turbokit' one I put in my gf's alero. The turbokit is just a flat panel, no pocket, just an ugly panel over that space. I guess if you wanted to put in a 1/2 DIN Eq. or something, it would be ok, and you could probably modify it to a switch panel, but if you want to do that go all out and buy one of the custom molded ones from the (humble bow) geniuses above

Has anyone else noticed that Alpine head units are good for quality, but lacking in styling? The one I'm buying after prices drop in January (after the big consumer electronics show out in Vegas where all the '04 models come out) looks the same as all the other alpine units, it's just more powerful and has XM capability... I guess they don't ned all the flash to sell their quality products, but I kinda like flash AND quality, ya know?

Yeah I feel Alpine personaly is visually unapealing. And I had originally purchased that kit for my car but my deck was to deep for it and i did not want to cut anything behind thedash. I had gotten it from bestbuy. Then the one from circiut city alowed me to mount my radio without cutting but like you said the blank cover is unapealing. Also i could not mount my radio trin ring that covers the aftermarket install ring with out cutting either the dash bezel or radiobezleand that was not an option to me. Lastly could everyone leave this tread to replies about my bezel as Iam looking for ideas for how people whould like to see this. So far the way I will be making it will alow for a lot of flexability and use of differant supplies to construct it. I originally set up this post on the last board to get ideas of how people would like to see this.

FYI I have decided to kill this prodject for now. I will eventually bring it back as a cheaper alternative to the way it was originally going to be. I could not get the cost of this one down lower than $60 and that was with me making almost no profit. I will be going to a few seminars in the future to get info on a solution to have them physicaly molded from plastic with the HVAC controls. The HVAC is the hardest part right now due to the fact that they are intergrated into the bezel. If this was Malibumod.com I would of had no problem as I nearly perfected my sisters for about $20 and it even has the similar texture of the factory peice. But anyway its dead for now, so look for something new and exciting in the future.

Just for kicks you could make it out of carbon fiber for those guys trying to match it with their interior.

EDIT- then i read the second page and saw you already thought about this.

I'm new to the molding, have do you do this? fiberglass and some sandpaper?

yeah basicly sandpaper and I used fiberglass renforced bondo to fill the spaces but I was building a prototype to use to cast a mold but still could not get it cheap enough

Hmm perhaps it might be cheaper to not worry about the contour lines of the HVAC control part and make the entire piece one flowing mold? ....Although I guess the part that is illuminated for the controls still needs to be incorporated into the mold....hmm I love the idea and would definetely be willing to pay $70-$80 for a custom one piece center console......

Yeah getting the icons to iluminate Is what I cant figure out. The new design would of had a more flowing hump to it than all the angles
