Hey ya'll! Car forums rule! Here's my intro: I'm in Colorado. My digital camera is picky about lighting but I'll try and post pics once in a while anyway. I've been doing the painting-the-interior-panels-thing with the spray on chrome paint, pics coming one of these days. My ride is a silver (thus the reason for trying the spray-on chrome paint) 2003 Alero GL something something, which is what attracted me to this site- lookin for info. I'm able to narrow my car down to being a GL, but I've been asked a couple times like by the insurance company and body shop if its a GL 1 or a GL 2. Anyone who can tell me the difference, you rule  so let me know, ok?!

Welcome to the site. I can't answer that question.. I can't answer many questions about cars. LOL But anyway, there are a lot of people here with a great deal of knowledge so you're in a good place.

Welcome to the group! GL1 and GL2 has something to do with your option package. Depending on what you have on your car will determine if it's a GL1 or a GL2. That's all I know. Maybe someone else will fill in the rest of the information.

well the only way that i really know how to tell is to look down behind your shifter and see if you have a little button that says "trac off" or something like that... or if you just have an open little space there that looks like there should be a button. My last one was a GL2 and it had it, this one is a GL1 and it doesn't so thats the only thing i can determine.
and welcome aboard.

GL1 and GL2 are the 2 different levels of the GL package. So depending on what options you have determines what GL you have

Welcome to the Site. Mine is a GX and I have traction control with a trac off/on button so what is my car a GX 2?

In 2000 when I got mine, the difference between GL1 and GL2 was the engine. The 4-cyl was standard for the GL package, the 3.4 was added as an option for GL2 and GL3. Then the 3.4 was standard on the GLS.
Mine's a GL2, 'cause I wanted the 3.4, but I have cloth, no sunroof, no sport package (I do have traction control).
And welcome!

well be cause the 3.4 IS an option on the GL1, the best way to tell would be the rear brakes. because the GL1 had drum and drum only. and the GL2 has rear disc. no other options. traction control is standard on GL2 and GLS, but still an option on GX and GL1.

And again that gives me questions becuase I have a GX with Rear Disk/Drum brakes or was it a option on the GX just like the Traction Control?

i think in the first year or two all aleros came with rear disc.

i think as they started towards the end of production, they just started putting whatever on whatever...LOL... which explains the GX we have sitting on the top of the hill with GA hubcaps on it...

All alero's 99-2002 had rear disk. Then in 03 they started making it an option. So the drums were standard on GX and GL1

Are you serious? A new car has the wrong hubcaps? That don't make sense because GM still has to make EXACT parts for the Alero for atleast 10 years after they stop production.

Hey thanks! That link did the trick - the 2.2L is "not available" on the GL2 and I have the 2.2L, therefore the car is a GL1. . . rock on B)

Thats cool that you guys actually hang out sometimes. It was you that has his car away for the winter isn't it? I think I read that in another post. Having it in storage would explain why I haven't seen it driving around Aurora or Northglenn then.

^ that was someone else with a blue kit'd Alero. He doesnt store his for the winter, he just breaks it :P
Like he said, i'm in longmont, I've only met 99Alero_boy, and I think hes coming down to L-town to get some tires and crap from my work soon. Look forward to having another Colorado Alero around!
