My AC has started making a funny noise. When I am at idle, my AC compressor makes a sort of grinding noise off and on. Its like it continues to cycle on and off and the idle goes up and down. It still cools fine, but I am not sure what it could be. I think the compressor may be going bad. Oh well I just wanted some input. I mean its still under warranty so I don't have to worry about paying for it. Thanks a bunch.

Well the compressor kept getting worse and worse. I took it today and dropped it off at the dealer. They are going to look at it Monday. This is just not a "normal" alero problem. I have done lots of research and found no one that has had an AC compressor on their alero at such early age.....Oh well, I will see whats going on Monday evening.

^haha
I had problems w/my AC and the blower thing. I thought it was ridiculous for a prob like this to happen only 20 months old, but I had to replace it. Lots of crappy probs w/these cars.

I would say the same except my stupid car kicks on the AC compressor when you put it on Recycle or Defrost. When I 1st heard it I had the Defroster on one morning. I liked my Mazda where I decided when I wanted the AC to kick on, not the car...Stupid GM. If the compressor is shot, it may be because I use recycle all of the time which makes the compressor always stay on. But I have bad allergies and smells from other peoples cars make me sick, so that helps keep those odors out.

My car does the same thing, seems to come and go. But the last time I had the car at the dealer, I noticed today that the sound went away. This could be due to that the weather is cold here in Ohio and in a warmer state the compressor may act different. Most people I talk to that have a newer N body say the a/c is a little noisy in their cars too. The dealer probably did nothing, but I know that the noise isn't there in the cold.

My AC has always made some noise since I bought it new. But this started last month and it is like a grinding. It almost makes me think that the compressor is going to lock up. I also heard that they can make noise if they are low of Freon.

It seems to me if I remember correctly that mine made a grinding noise too. But as I said its cold out here so maybe the freon is different in warmer weather then cold. It would be nice if it was warm out so I could see it my car is still making that noise now. Oh well.

That strange that yours won't do it all of the time. It has been in the high 20's here of the morning this past week. I can turn my defrost on, and buy the time I get to work and park, I hear the noise from the compressor.

Well I checked the compressor agian after driving around about 25min and the grinding sound is there, but not as loud. I know I could hear the sound really well last summer. I thought it wasn't making the sound in the cold, but after driving around the sound is evident. I suppose the compressor has to get so much use before the grinding sound starts. My brothers car is an 01 malibu and after talking to him, he has the same problem with his car. Could be common with GM cars.

What a crock of CRAP! I toolk my POS to the dealer and they claim the noise is within GM's operating Spec's..... That is a JOKE! They say that GM compressors must release preasure and that is the sound I am hearing. Oh well, I guess I will just drive it in hopes the compressor locks up. Then they will be forced to do something about it! My car has 32k on it, so if it happens after 36k my extended warranty will have to eat it. These are the days I HATE MY CAR and these stupid A** Dealerships.
my car is outside and it is freezing here... in the single digits... and my heat has been rattling too, i think it is just cuz of the temp... cuz i've never had that happen before...

Well I thought about it, and thought about it until I got really pissed off today. I went back to the dealer and MADE a technician get in the car with me and listen to what they call "normal".I ask them if it was so normal, why did my car not make the noise for the 2 years I have had it until now. They did not have an answer. I told them that I was not satisfied with my car making that "normal" noise. Then they said they would replace my AC compressor if thats what I wanted them to do.... Its so funny how bitching works so well sometimes. I am sick of paying high prices for these junky cars, then the dealer trying to screw people out of fixing them under warranty...
