Mmm....paint fumes.
I got tired of my gloss black GAGT mirrors, so I figured it was time to correct that with the nice 70 degree weather.
Got a few coats of primer on them now. Looking pretty damn good.

i take it you are using a rattle can???
make it easier take a box poke 3 holes and bolt the mirror to the box
no need to lay it back down
let that dry scuff the rattle can primer down with a red scuff pad
then go ahead and base rattle can and the rattle can clear
between those steps use dx 330 and a tack rag to remove dust

Looks good. Why didn't you pop the mirrors out? they just pop right out of place with a little tug and go back in place with a little push.

Score....matches perfectly to the new paint. Once I clear coat them, they will look awesome.
I'm comparing it to my old mirrors, just cause thats the only thing I had available.

The factory one looks more grey-ish blue, and yep, more metallic, but I don't think it will be very noticeable once installed. It'll obviously be a closer match than black was.

Chris, did your professional eyes notice the primer that was showing thru too? That was just with one VERY light coat of blue.

I think bdyman needs to get a grip, those mirrors will look 100% stock color with a couple more coats of paint and a couple coats of clear on them the reason why they dont look as metallic is becuase there is no clear on it.

anyhoo.....it does need to be a little more metallic...clear wont do anything for that....seems that its quite close other than that.

The paint looks flat till it has clear, Clear coating it will make it look alot better and will let the metallic stick out.
smokinAMD
11-18-2004, 09:10 PM
I'm finishing the paint when it stops raining outside. It was too cold and humid to do painting today. Didn't even bother cause I know it wouldn't stick.

Black mirrors come on the base models. Ala your GX. Body matched mirrors were standard on the GLS. At least this was the case in '99. I think the GL's got black mirrors in '02 or '03.
Seeing as my original mirrors were body matched, I thought I'd paint my new mirrors.
Once done, the paint is going to match perfectly.

Opened to reply, not via PM, cause this actually was a good question.
As far as I know, GAGT's DID NOT come with manual mirrors. Power only. Manuals were on the SE's, so you are out of luck.
Of course, my brother has a '97 GAGT, but he has manual mirrors. So I think this was something that took place when they moved over to n-body in '99.

Color comparison again.
Anyways, I'm REALLY satisfied with the way this turned out. It matched the new paint on my car PERFECTLY. The paint on those mirrors is original so its a little bit off.
Heres how its gone so far.
1.) Scuffed the mirrors up with 600 grit sand paper
2.) Shot 2 or 3 coats of primer on
3.) Put 2 layers of base coat on
4.) Sanded with 1000 grit sand paper
5.) Put final layer of base coat on.
6.) 3 - 4 layers of clear coat letting sit for about an hour between each coat.
7.) Let sit overnight
8.) Buff out with rubbing compound
9.) Put back on car
Oh yeah, driving with no mirrors on my car is uhh...interesting.

If anyhting the color on the new mirros is alot better probabaly do to the old mirrors had faded a little, but just like I said the clear would bring the metallic out of it and make it shine. Good Job Smokin.

Nah, you are lucky. You can get yours from a junkyard color matched for dirt cheap.
They didn't make Grand Am GT's in my color, SE only. (Unless someone can prove me wrong.) So I didn't have a choice in the matter.
I got the mirrors from a chevy dealership in Arkansas on ebay for $85. Paint supplies set me back about $70.

I'm curious how 2 month old paint has faded allready.
I still haven't buffed the mirrors yet, once I do that, it should be perfect. I think it's allready there, just the mirrors might be a bit shinier then the rest of the car.
