Manual Shifting On Auto Tranny

Hey guys. I've been experimenting with take offs by manual shifting my auto tranny. I've got the 3.4L V6 engine. What i'm doing is putting it in 1st, floor it until it gets up to 5500 RPM, then put it in 2nd. by the time it goes into 2nd gear, the RPM's are at about 5900, then do the same thing in 2nd before putting it in 3rd. It SEEMS to be quicker, but i've never taken it to a race track cuz i don't know where any are in San Jose, CA. :( Does manual shifting make any difference at all?

you have to hit the shifts perfectly or it takes a second to kick into the next gear, ive tried it a few times and find it easier to leave in drive and just floor it :D although i do have the ecotec so that might make a bit of difference

lol i unno call it a prediction, yea you can shift manually in auto but meh...

It's not quicker. No one can shift faster then an auto transmission.

I have yet to also test this out at the track, but theoretically, it should be quicker because you get 200-300 more rpm if you shift it manually. This will help the motor stay in its power band a little bit better. When I shift manually, I leave it in second and only manually shift the 2-3 gear shift. When it's in second like that, the 1-2 gear shift is pretty quick and pretty hard. I also notice when I manually shift from 2-3, the acceleration remains pretty steady after shifting. As opposed to letting it shift itself, then it seems to bog down just a little bit after the shift.

certaqin auto's youll be suprised how fast some people can shift sometimes


the advantage of manual is being able to shift wheny ou want to

i shift my auto like a manual and i have to agree, when you poop it into gear yourself it seems to accelerate at the same constant rate, so it may be a little faster but no one can really tell till its tested at the track :thumbsup:

I shift my Auto alot of the time seems to keep the Torque up gives you a real snap when you get on the gas above 3000 rpm's.

^^^That's nuff said, but do you have the DHP or anything? If you had that, it wouldn't make a difference. Stock, maybe, it just feels like the acceleration is consistent when shifting manually. It keeps pulling strong to the governor. I was going to test it out this Friday coming up, but there's this girl...well anyway. Yeah, someday, I'll get time comparisons.

all i have in a CAI and full catback exhaust.........i thought it felt faster so i tried it on a couple runs......doesn't work.....but you should try anyway....

Yeah, I have witnessed people with teh 3400 and the 2.4L with autos, their times are never as fast as when they just leave it in 3.

^Agreed. Leave it in 3rd instead of D when you launch and leave it there. If you want the tranny to shift faster than this on it's own, then invest in a B&M shift kit so it doesn't "glide" into the next gear but instead snaps in quicker.

manual shifting a auto does sound dumb. but on my aurora, if you left the gear selector in 2, it increased the line pressure, it shifted so fast and hard into 2nd, it chirped the tires, and it would delay the shifts 100-200rpm. i havn't tried it in the alero, but in cases like this, it has a benefit

^^ Agreed...leaving it in 2nd when launching and letting it shift into 2nd from 1st by itself DOES shift firmer and then you have to manually shift it into 3rd. I DO have a B&M shiftplus kit also, but just leaving it in 3 or D does not bark my tires from 1st to 2nd..but launching in 2 does easily. I don't know how/why this is true, but it is...at least with my car.

i didn't notice a difference on the alero, from a dead stop, or kickdown. they did it on 4t80e's for towing.....:D

If he had a 4T80E yeah 4.0L v-8, because the 3.5L v-6 aurora came with a 4t65e.

yep...it was a 95 with the autobahn package (more aggressive gearing). i loved kicking that thing down at like 25mph, and screaching the tires at like 35
