View Full Version : Acceleration Surges When Engine Is Cold

Once again, as the title says. When my fiancee's engine is cold (like after all night) it doesn't accelerate smoothly. It acts like it's struggling or something, as if I'm not holding the throttle steady. I have never checked it under hard throttle, as that isn't good for a cold engine. I am, once again, curious if anyone else has had this occur..?

give it 5-10 minutes to warm up at least i've lived in montana and am now living in colorado you must warm your car before pulling out otherwise it will sputter.

Yeah, I've noticed this too living in Missouri.

My car had to warm up for a bit yesterday before it idled right. It was going from 300-700 rpms. Sounded really nasty, but once it warmed up it was good to go.

I live in NY & My car does the same thing, just let the car warm up a bit like the others said....must be a 2.4 glitch
PS: My fuel Pump just bit the dust on My 2001 Alero & it only has 24,500 miles!

i dunno if its 40 degrees colder, i had the problem too, not as bad i can still drive the car but under moderate acceleration it hesitated and sputtered a lil bit........i think when its just extreme weather change, although its been getting to high 30's at night here in southern california ive been waking up with ice on my car especially on the hood, top of car, and the deck........i know you guys are thinkin high 30's that aint cold, for southern california.......trust me, thats cold......

Usually you are just supposed to warm your car up for about 30 seconds to get the oil to all the necessary parts. After that you are doing more harm than good.

Is it a standard? I know a cold throwout bearing can do this until it warms up from the friction.

same thing happens to me from time to time with my 2.4 in the grand am. it seems to be a common problem with the 2.4 in all cars.
