Just curious, but does anyone know what an Ecotec can run stock with a 5-speed versus modded?

Mid-16's? Maybe low 16's with a reall good driver on a cold day..

well, I'm hoping to cut that to the low 15's without going to cams and cranks on it- first I'm going exhaust, CAI, plugs, and short shifter. I can get away with a lot without voiding my warranty, but even I can't hide a race head from a GM auditor! :P

the CAI and exhaust will be more obvious than a ported head, as long as the head still works with the stock computer...

And none of that will get you into the low 15's

Put your car on a weight loss program... cavalier 5-speeds can pull low 15's with simple bolt ons like you mentioned, because they're a few hundred pounds lighter..

I'm talking blown-up engine kinda warranty issues here- anything else I'm already authorized to fix. The only thing my dealership has to call GM on is actual engine replacement, and it's simple enough to reinstall the factory exhaust and intake before they come out to look.

A ported cylinder head has never played a part in blowing up an engine...

Yes, but it DOES void a warranty.

Only if they can prove it played a role in whatever part is in question breaking.. otherwise they can't refuse you service, if they do, call GM on them and tell them.. besides, why are you so afraid your engine is going to glow up? It's not going to with simple bolt-on's like that...

I have a 03 alero ecotec. Bought it after a lease was up and recieved it with 25000 miles on it. I bought it wednes day and took it to the track that night to see if I really wanted it. Make a long storie short i was running consistant 16.3's with wheel hop from hell and launched very good one time and got to the very tip of a 15.9. Now im almost sure that Alero has factory mods on this car compared to the cavalier because I personally have not lost to one yet. Just fyi some of the cavaliers from like 2000 till they started the new body style are accually heavier than the four door alero by a couple hundred pounds. THis was before they switched to unibody. Those are not as fast as the newer ones with ecotec.

A *few* problems with what you said:

"From like 2000 till they started the new body style" - the cavalier has been virtually the same car from 1995 until it's final year in 2004-2005, regardless of body style, underneath the car has been identical.

"This was before they switched to unibody" - Ok I'm not sure what you think a unibody car is, but the cavalier has always been a unibody structure since it's inception in the 1980's, the Alero/Grand Am are also unibody vehicles (like EVERY passenger car since the mid-1980s

"Actually heavier than the four door alero by a couple hundred pounds." - No. They are actually lighter than a four door (or a two door) alero by a couple hundred pounds. A 2-door, 5-speed ECOTEC equipped Alero (the lightest offered) is probably ~200lbs heavier than the Z-24 (2.4L TwinCam, heavier iron block) 4-door, sunroof-equipped cavalier, probably the heaviest cavalier offered. And the 4-door, V6 fully loaded Alero is probably 400lbs heavier than a cavalier.

My 2003 2 dr Ecotec alero came at a whopping 2888lbs from the dealership. I have a CAI and a catback. I'm taking it dragging this weekend, see what times I'll get.

A guy in Grand Am forum ran a stock rented 4 door cavalier with the 4 speed auto through the 1/4 mile at 15.88

I raced a rental 2001 Cavalier LS I rented from I work 2 years ago in 'King of the Hill' It is an elimination race 1 on 1 around a 1/2 mile oval Just outside of Toronto. I beat a 4 cyl MX-3 in my first race, then got spanked by a Corvette in race 2. I still have the pics somehwere
