Hello
I changed the oil in my 02Alero ecotec and added the correct amount 4.8 L of 5w30 and now when I start the engine the oil is puking out. It looks like its comming from the cannister that the filter fits into. I haven't actually seen it puke out but when the engine was running there was a big puddle under the car. Did I put too much oil in? The owners manual calls for 4.8L and I was careful not to overfill. Also did I crush the O ring on the canister lid? the o ring looks good. Could I have tightened it too much? the lid is marked 25nm. I am sure that I didnt under tighten it. Any suggestions

yea i think you put too much, when i do my 3400 it requires 4.5 quarts which is about 4.3 litres, the fact that you added 1/2 a litre more than i did and you have a smaller engine makes me believe you over filled it......

4.8 liters is about 1.26 gallons. thats a lot of oil.

yeah i'd say u over filled it. There might be a double gasket on it tho, that could also cause it to leak out....

I'd say you over filled it no matter what engine you have.

Actually, it turns out that I crushed the oil canister lid when I either removed it or mabe I did it when i put it back on. That was at the nut end. The plyer indented the nut and caused it to leak. Man those lids are delicate. I was using a oil filter plyer type tool. Not one that fits exactly to the plastic nut. BE WARNED!! Could be that I'm just tooo f..ken strong. The 1 1/4 inch ratchet just dosn't quite make it because of the exhaust manifold with the wrench on it. You got to use a fitting that is between the ratchet handle and the 1 1/4 inch whatchacallit. To off set the handle. I asked if there is the proper tool at the GM dealer, but he wasn't devulging much info. anyway, I hope this helps someone else. Cheers and Merry Xmas to all a good night :D

I am ever so happy it wasn't overfilled and busted seals etc. the exact amount that the engine takes is 4.8 L and yes I am Canadian. Super happy that it is an easy fix :D .. Stupid mistake, but easy fix. Buy a new lid

You are scaring me. so I checked the owners manual again. Capacities and Specifications page 5-86 engine oil with filter, 2.2L English (in my manual 5.0 Quarts) and metric (4.8 L) it also indicates that the 3400 V6 is a mear 4.5 Quarts or 4.3 L.. thats ecotec.
