Today I went to the track to have some fun with my car. I usually don't do this kind of thing and race... but since I'll probably only do it once the entire time I have the car... I decided what the hell.
Anyways...
My friend came with me.. his car is a 98 Monte Carlo 3.8 v6.
He asked if I wanted to go against him... I'm like I have no chance against you..
I've got the ecotec.
Anyways... he got me to do it.
We got to the track and it started... who ever got to the finish line first won.
The green light came on and we went.
It was practically a tie the entire way... he won the race by by less than half of my car. When I looked over I could see his door handle. Thats how close we were.
Now.. was he being nice and just trying not to make me look like an idiot racing a 3.8.. or would that actually be a close race.
Its not that big of a deal... its just more of a wow.. my cars faster than I thought thing.
Thats all.. just wondering

I put my ecotech up against my friend's 99 Grand Prix GT with the 3.8 and got destroyed. My performance mods are an intake and an Pilot exhasut. He has an intake and 2 Flowmaster Deltaflow 40 series. About 70 - 80 more horsepower than my ecotech. The Monte must not have had it floored. I don't have the 5 speed though, but the difference can't be too much.

I regularly race Grand Prix GT's (only 55-60 more HP) and beat them. I have a CAI and Cat-back exhaust, and my friends cars do to. One of them only just started beating me when he put in his DHP and then it is only by .1 to .2 seconds.
When I raced a stock 4-dr Grand Prix GT I was beating him consistently by over .5 secs. I even have a pic of us at half track with me well in the lead.
I am sure this Monte Carlo was giving it for all it's worth, they just aren't that fast.
FantomForceCustoms02 - Your car is probably slower due to it being auto (as you mentioned), being a 4 door (extra weight), having those heay 17's, the extra weight of the flip flop trunk, and other possible heavy car mods?

i test drove a 98 z34 monte carlo before i bought the aler-ho and it was definatly faster than my 01 3400. but i popped the hood, and the hose after the TB was just hanging there, no air box filter or anything, hows that for a cai? LOL probably part of the reason that one felt alot faster than my car
stock, the 3800 powered cars like monte's and grand prix gt's are just a hair faster than 3400 cars. i think 5speed ecotechs run about even with auto 3400's too, with a good driver.
there about 400lbs heavier than 3400's, 700lbs heavier than the 5sp ecotechs

A litely modded 3400 will beat a stock 3800 just due to the extra weight in cars that have the 3800.
I personally beaten the Firebird with the 3800, but it was very slight victory.

The 3400s are fast compared to the ecotech. A slightly modified 2 door 3400 kept up with my friend with the 4 door Grand Prix GT, but wasn't able to beat him.

Yes the auto slows it down and the additional weight of 4 doors. My 17s are only 17 pounds a piece and the flip flop trunk is the factory trunk with pieces cut out. The trunk doesn't add any weight. My stereo probably adds about 100 + pounds though. i have 2 Legacy 12s, a 1600 watt amp, capacitor, a new floor, and custom box. The Grand Prix's stereo outweighs mine. His single 15" weighs more than both of my 12s. He also has 18" chrome Lexani's. Atleast 40 pounds a piece. So it's not really a weight problem.
If anyone knows how to resize the sig, please let me know. Mines a little large.

I have a V6 3400 in my Alero and I run about 15.4ish and I have two friends with identical Monte Carlo Z34's w/ the 3800 series II motors in them and I spank them every time we race (either one). And the 5-speed Ecotec's (if driven well) can put out times in the mid 15's so I'd say he was tryin his hardest and u just kept up well! Good Job man!

the other night when i was coming home from work and i was going about 55 or so and i passed an alero with a couple guys in it and the next thing i know he pulls up next to me just looking at me and the he gunned it and so did i and i passed him pretty easily and then when we came to a stop i asked him if he had a four or six and he said six. so i figured with just my wai and flowmaster muffler it feels pretty good doin a v6 up like that.

the "couple of guys" slowed down his car too. i notice when my older brother is in the car, my car is noticibly slower, then again, he's about 300lbs, at least, maybe up to 320ish... about the same as 2 skinny guys.
in all honesty, i wish i got the 2.2/5speed. im getting tired of auto's, 2.2 5 speed black coupe...:D but dark blue is the best for sedans!!! :P

In the quarter mile I would think that it would be a very close race against a 3.8 monte. The 3400 alero's and the 3.8 gran prix gts are pretty good races when each car has one person in it. I have a friend that I race every now and then and he has a 99 gran prix gt and we are fairly close every time.

I go up against V6 grand prix's all the time and they suck against my 2.4L and all i have is an intake. I beat them by like 2 1/2 car lengths it's really sad lol ive also beaten a 1990 plymoth laser(killed it) I dont know how but my cars pretty fast for a little 4 banger :pimp:

it does not take much to make a gp gt fastest....so if you go up against one with some mods watchout. I am on clupgp and alot of the gt's are modded!!!! Watch out for GTP's also......

did they make a 2.4 5 speed? i thought it was just 2.2's, but i could be wrong as i dont own one/know about them. but no way will a auto 2.4 take a 3800 grand prix, you must be racing old 3100 ones., or even 3.1's

I am not saying you havent beat a gt...so dont take it that way.....they are just not as slow as you are making them out to be........I foresee alot of alero trying to take on the gp and seeing nothing put the reflective pontiac logo on the rear. lol......just messing with ya....!!!!

I've never had that problem.
power to wieght the gpgt and alero V6 are very close.
with minor minor mods I'd pull gpgt's pretty easy.

i ve raced a 2.2l cav it ran 17.2 with an intake and it was manual o ya it was a 2 door also i don't think any 2.2l can beat a 3.8L unless it has like 200,000 miles on it and flat tires. 2.2L are slow. i have the 2.4L 5 speed (aem intake, flow master 60)and i ran 16.6 at best i had alot of gas so i could maybe get down to a 16.4 i don;t see my car getting any lower. but there is no way a 2.2L can even beat or keep up with any 3.4 or 3.8 unless the person is half retared thats driving it. so lads not to get your hopes up but your 4 bangers are slow and will always be slow. thier fun to drive to i will admit that expesialy the 5 speed its got some go

You do know that we all have 2.2L ecotec engines and that 2.2L Cavy you raced is a completely different motor right?
2.2L ecotec = DOHC, 16-Valve 140HP (underratted) 150lb-ft Aluminum block
2.2L in that cavy = OHV 8-valve 115HP 120lb-ft. Iron block
So yeah, the ecotec is way faster and will/does smoke your 2.4L (did it many many times). The OHV 2.2L was a POS, slow slow engine.
A 2.2L ecotec can keep up with and beat 3.4L/3.8L in the right heavy car.
A friend of mine had a rented 2003 Cavalier 4 door with the 4-speed automatic and the 2.2L ecotec (switched over to the ecotec in 2002 from the 2.2L you raced)
He did a 15.77 in that car, and that is a bone stock car abused by renters. So that car would of embarresed your car. Check the numbers of some of the ecotec 2.2L guys on this site, we have some fast times.
I know I did a 15.21 in cold weather and could run 15.4's and 15.5's all day long in the heat. I had a CAI, Catback exhaust.

And don't make such an ignorant statement without checking facts.
A 1992-1993 Pontiac Grand Am or Oldsmobile Calias with the 2.3L QUAD 4 would eat almost any stock non-boosted GM V6 (except for that new 2.8L and 3.6 DOHC engines). They made 170-180HP (depend on cams) right out of the facotry. A 1990 Olds Calis with the hotter cams would do 14.9 stock according to car and driver magazine. I have witnessed two different 1993 Grand ams with WAI, catback exhaust do runs of 15.10 and 15.33 respectively and each had close to 200 000KM on them at the time.
The only problem with that engine is they like to blow up. My friend who ran the 15.10 just blew his third motor in that car.

but a auto eco with a muffler and wai will see the ass end of a 3400, especially a 3800. 5 speeds are different, they seem to about match a auto 3400 if driven right
