I have had this faint noise for a while now. Once in a while when I turn my sterring wheel like turning into a parking space, I hear a faint zipper type sound coming from my steering wheel area. I can't pin point exactly where its coming from though. It almost sounds like when you unzip a coat, but somewhat fainter. I think it has done it since the car was almost new. I don't want to take it in unless I know it may be a real problem cause my dealer has a hard time with noise complants. They always say they can't hear it (most of the time it never makes any strange noises at the dealer)...And being that it don't always do it, I think it would be a waste of time to take it. Just wondering if any of you have every heard this type noise from your Alero?

Heh, better get it fixed before your next date or you might scare her off :P

My car has been making new creaking noises since the temperature dropped to minus a kabillion. I can't think of what might be causing your noise though.

Yes, I had the same thing. It was the intermediate steering shaft. Mine had to be replaced.

I don't think its anything serious. I am just picky when it comes to noises. The noise does seem to change with weather. It makes me think something rubber just needs to have some lube sprayed on it...

Did that fix your noise?

Yes it did, no problems since.

I'm picky with noises as well, and my dealer has a hard time hearing noises as well (still have an unrelated knock right front end behind dash which comes back every winter), but my zipper noise was quite noticable.

See the noise I have is not very noticable yet. My car has 33k on it, but I have an extended warranty until 100k. So I am going to let it get louder and consistant before I take it in for that. Thanks for your help though. I wonder if there is any danger with it or is it just a noise?

I'm really not too sure, but I did not get the impression it is a dangerous condition. Mine just started loudly at 55k (kms).

zipper noise...............boy did my mind get off topic quick.........LOL

i have heard some rubber rubbing noise if i listen very close but i don't think it really is much.

but when you have it fixed, let us know if it is not taken care of if it is dangerous.

THATS exactly what I think it sounds like. Rubber rubbing something. On the next warm day, I am going to check along the steering rod and see if there is a rubber boot or something that I can spray some lube on. To me the noise don't really sound serious or loud enough to take it to the dealer. All they will say is "unable to dublicate problem" or my favorite "Operating within GM's Spec's"

it's the leather/vinyl from the steering wheel rubbing against the stationary part just behind the steering wheel ...BOTH my friends' GAGT's do the same thing...my alero doesnt tho :) There's really no way to fix it unless you like put some armor all between there to sort of lube it.
