i was wondering when i should change my oil filter. I put synthetic so i'm going 6,000 miles instead of 3,000 miles. So would the filter be ok for 6,000 miles or should i change it at 3,000 miles?

IMO, at the very least I would replace the oil and filter at the regular intervals. no matter what type of oil you are running. but it comes down to how often you drive it, wether it is city or highway driving, and how hard you drive it.

Full synthetic oils can go longer without changing than your regular oil, or your half oil half synthetic.

If you think about it, your oil filter will get all the poop in it that it would get with your normal oil. So its up to you.

I'd do it regularly.

If you do it every other time, you may forget one time.

But that is not the only reason, oil is very important in a car

i agree.

i would never change the oil without filter. nor filter without oil.

your asking for problems down the road.

stop being cheap and just change oil and filter every 3000

Well I suggest an oil change every 4000 miles using full synthetic and bosch fitler totaling out at 50 bucks. Well that what i do since full synthetic is almost $9.00 a quart.

I'll have to check my manual, but I believe the recommended oil change schedule is every 6000 or 6500 miles or sooner depending on driving conditions, and that's for regular dino juice....... The dealerships are the ones that have always pushed the 3000 mile b.s.

Check this site out.... http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/oil-life.html

And a quote if you actually read the testing. Pay attention to the last sentence.......

"The oil change indicator blipped on at 36,091 miles, which is 5,113 miles into the test. During the Mobil 1 study, the indicator tripped at 5,060 miles, so we must be doing a pretty good job of keeping the test regimen fairly consistent. Oh, and those of you who still change dinosaur juice every 3,000 miles are changing your oil 40% more often than you need to."

The Mobil one lasted for 18,000 miles with one filter change at 12,000 miles............

i view an oil change as cheap insurance. i dont mind paying $10-$30 every 2-3 months to know i have clean fresh oil instead of garbage sludge in there. my girlfriend forgot to change hers and her engine went (dodge intrepid 2.7 - known for needing more frequent changes). personally i dont like seeing stuff similar to black water comming out of the engine as opposed to the amber honey that went in. maybe its a comfort thing.

edit: i use synthetic and i go every 4000 miles almost all highway.

you should be able to go 6000 easy with synthetic. all the mechanics i've talked to say you CAN go 10,000 miles without changing the filter or anything. if you change the filter, change the oil also. i'll be switching over to synthetic next time i drive mine and i probably wont have to change mine for 6 months or more since i wont be driving it often.

i say you're safe at 6,000

I have run full synthetic for the past three years, I change filter every 4,000 and run the oil anywhere from 10,000 to 12,000 on a change. It sounds like a lot but by dad runs the same stuff in his over the road tractor-trailer and he pulls samples everyonce in a while and shows no sign of wear at 10,000.
