Ok, so i've been looking at a new alero... and I want a 6 cylinder coupe, but I haven't seen any on like... autotrader or anything like that, I was just curious which model is the V6, is it only the GLS? or do other models have them as well? all the coupes i've seen are 4 bangers... and also, if anyone would be kind to post, or direct me to an area where they compare each of the models of the alero. Thanks Everyone!

I was checking out that site and I can't really tell a lot of details different from my 99. Other than the radio, everything else looks the same. But hey I guess if it aint broke you dont fix it.

I beleive those are the options for the last year Alero was sold. So if you are looking for a 2004, that would be helpful.

The options had to have been different for at least the 99s. I have a 99 that's labeled a GL with the 4 cylinder. it has 4 wheel disc brakes with power windows, locks and mirrors, and factory foglights, all consistant with a GL1. but it came stock with the 15" steel wheels and hub caps, and the stereo without the "speed-compensated volume control", which is supposed to be only the GX, and not only did it not come with a remote keyless entry, the car isnt even equipped with the control module for it. I guess you could kinda say i have a 99 Alero GXL1.... :huh?:

^ to clarify, I think the spectrum from "bare minimum" to "fully loaded" goes like this:
GX -> GL1 -> GL -> GL2 -> GLS

If it's not that, it's pretty friggin close.

My 02 is the GL v6 full-loaded coupe without leather, but I didn't want leather.

If you've upgraded the struts and springs, then you have the sports suspension.

well suspension components consist of much more than struts and springs, but i doubt olds upgraded anything else with the "suspension package"

actually, someone on here bought sprint springs and found that his car already had eibachs... it was never declared that they were aftermarket from a previous owner, or stock (maybe part of the sport suspension package?)

well some alero's came stock with sports suspension, and like formula said, shocks and springs arn't all thats in a suspension, the olds version may have other "beefed up" parts in it.

i got a 04 alero coupe, it's got a v6, and it is pretty phat

The way to tell the sports suspension is the stock tires. (16" premeium)

The regulars on a GLS were Goodyear egale LS's

The sport suspensions were goodyear eagle RS-A's

GX, GL1, GL2, GLS

They have different models and standard equipment over the years, the trimlevels were-

GX - GL1 - GL2 - GL3 - GL4 - GLS

I believe i have ALL the brochures for the alero for 99-04 I may be missing one though.

GX was only a 4-cylinder and had crank windows

GL1 was a 4-cylinder with power windows, optional V6

GL2 was a V6 with performance suspension, certain years had the 4-cyl 5-speed optinal

GL3 had even more standard equipment than GL2

GL4 (only made for 1 year?) was a 4-cylinder with leather

GLS was top of the line, leather, V6, etc... optional performance suspension

^ Correction on the gx.. it was also the only model that offered a 5 speed transmission.. none of the other models offered it.

I drove a GL2 5-speed on the dealer lot, it was a 2002. Without looking it up in my info, i believe you could get a 5-speed GL in 00-01-02 but not in 03 or 04 unless you were in Canada.

Ok, i'm confused. I have the 3.4 V6, front and rear disk brakes, rearview mirror with map lights (only available on GLS) yet I dont have leather which is standard on GLS, and I have 15 inch wheels which point to GL1. Can anyone figure this out???

doubleN0alero

Both of my GL's had maplights...

Based on Oldspimp's post about tires, i'm led to believe that my fiancee's '02 GLS has the sport suspension. Anyone know what the difference between the sport and the regular suspension is?

Alero04

doubleN0alero

it has a little different look to it. No pun intended, but it looks a little more "sporty"...LOL. On the GL, when you get the sport suspension though, you also get the 16 inch wheels as well.

Okay I got a question...what is with the gold trim?...is it just for looks or is there more to it? I have an'01 GLS with everything...Leather...roof...fogs...suspension but according to Croleros Alero options post the power height adjusment was not available yet I have it...is the options page says it was not available...(possible misprint?

Look at the SPID (Service Parts Identification) label, i believe it's on the bottom side of the spare tire cover. Look for the 3 digit code "FE3". If that's on there, then you have the "performance suspension package" or whatever they called it.

I know it's the sport suspension, I'm just curious as to what exactly was upgraded with the sport package, how much better than stock it actually is, and how would it compare to aftermarket suspensions.
When we were test driving it, we did figure eights in an empty casino parking lot and it felt tighter and more stable than i expected, but i haven't driven one without it, so I don't know what to compare it to.

Probably shock/strut differences, and bushing material differences (I know that some models use different control arms)

ran

the alero sport suspension have stiffer springs 23% front 14% at the rear. the struts tuned more aggressive and the bushing is harder .the result is improve stability but harder ride.

Stencil

The sport suspension also has stamped steel control arms instead of aluminum ones up front.

So, Cliffy - we figured out why my 04 GL1 has leather (aftermarket!), but what's up with the rear disc? It's not supposed to be available on a 4 cylinder car of that year :)
