Hey I found this while researching about what would be possible tirewise on my Alero. After searching posts here and elsewhere on various forums this was the closest supportive bit of info I found. However this particular person owns a GAGT.. http://www.cardomain.com/id/blakegrandam is his cardomain. He has a set of eagle alloy 077 17 x 8's with 255/40/17! I was amazed, i had never even heard of many ppl going larger than 235 on their aleros. Does the Grand Am have deeper wheel wells than our Aleros? How would this be possible while the wheel only has an offset of +38, this is something I would like to look into. The handling would be incredible with a set of 255's! with the 17 wheel and this tire combo i think would be the most appropriate balance of wheel protection and handling, the treadwalls aren't too thick or thin, but the tread width would be great. Let me know what you guys out there have read/seen/heard about/experienced.

I'm pretty sure 245s would fit on the 077 18" rims, but I really don't know about 255. IMO that would be pushing it. It might be possible on 17" rims with a high offset (like the 077's)... but if you try it, you might rub the tires when you turn.

I was mainly concerned with whether or not the tire would clear the fender/wheel wells and the suspension tower through the entire turning radius. I am confident a 245/255 would fit on a 17 x 8 rim.

you could have the tire place do a test fit. i'm pretty sure you'll rub the strut assembly though, maybe if you got some wheel spacers and some longer lug post bolts (if needed) you could put 255's or maybe bigger.

255's will fit but would require wheel spacers.

the 225s look pretty wide on the stock rims, but 235 might work. I'd ask first though.

Yeah bigd, i think our stock rims are actually 16 x 6.5 in size, with a +43 offset (correct me if i'm wrong) but I would not reccomend going bigger than 225, unless you get a wider rim, atleast a half inch or so. One time I walked up to an alero that happened to have 245's on 16 inch wheels, however these were aftermarket wheels, not sure what width. They were had to be atleast 7.5 probably 8 inches. Does anybody out there know the specs regarding wheel well/strut tower dimensions according the the Alero and Grand AM GTs? I am curious if there is a difference in size, or clearance between the two models.
