Okay, so last night I went out to my car and started it up to find that one of my lights wasn't working. Thinking that it may not have ingnited, I flipped the high beams a couple times and still got nothing. When I got home I pulled the bulb out, but here's my question....how can you tell if the bulb is burnt out or if its something else along the way (ignitor, ballast, etc)? I'd rather not buy a new light bulb only to find out that the bulb is not the problem.

check all the wiring see if everything is hooked up where it's supposed to be and nothing is touching metal or other wires. if it's all good, check the fuse you have the HID's hooked into. if it's not blown check and see if you're getting power from the ballast with a volt meter. if no power, it's probably the ballast. if there is power, it's probably the bulb.

Here is the order I would check in:

1. Fuse
2. Relay
3. Bulb
4. Ballast

Just hope its one of the first 2...

I would swap the bulbs each to the other side.

If the same side is still dead, and the other side works, you know its not the bulb. If its easy, swap your relays now. Or give power to the system and listen to see if your relays are changing over (should hear a click). If the relay isn't clicking, buy a new one. If it is, tap into the output terminals with a power tester or a spare bulb with a couple wires to see if there is anything coming out of it. If there is power coming out of the relay, then your ballast is likely toast :(
