I'm not sure how any people on here have put some kind of grill plating on their car... but i have a few questions anyhow... (i'm still kinda on the fence about this....)

What did you use?
How did you rust proof it?
How did you fasten it on?
How much did it cost?
How hard/how long did it take?

thanks.

I haven't put it on yet... But I've done some research and what I'm planning on doing is;

Buy mesh wire at home depot (haven't looked into size, cost, ext.)
"Fasten" it on with clear silicone.
I'm expecting to pay like 30-40 dollars at most.

I used Grill Mesh, that was extra from my Brothers Bodykit. Silicone to hold it down, came out really well.

I used gutter guard from Lowes (Home Depot same thing) and clear silicone to put it on. total price was like 10 bucks or something.

I used gutter guard too, mine's held in place with a few zip ties. That stuff is so light you could almost hold it in place with a well placed loogie...almost.

any kind of mesh or gutter guard will work and some zip ties and silicone and you'll be fine. Just watch out for those damn black birds. I had my middle one taken out because of one.

i'm more worried about unplowed streets in the winter. a decent ice chunk from a car, or it rusting from all the precip we get around here....

Mine's rusted but it's been there for like 3 years. Looks like poop I need to take it off.

paint it like silver or something and it shouldn't rust.
Mine hasn't rusted, I got mine from customcargrills.com used silicone fasten it in. And here in Colorado, my neighborhood doesn't get plowed, and I always drag the bottom of my car and the lower part of my bumper in the snow, and it's stayed in there fine

I bought a nice one at the speed shop about 4 years ago.

I used white engine paint the paint mine

Center piece I used drywall screws to blot it down, the sides, wedged in front of the fog lights and zip tied them in

So all i need is some silicone adhesive and zip ties?

anyone have some under the bumper pics of there... like where they zip tied to?

i think after i do my calipers, i'll hit the grill with some of the left over clear coat... that should do it...

just get some aluminum mesh, i got mine for free from Dupont because they had some extra laying around the machine shop, the good thing about aluminum is it wil not rust adn is semi corosive resistant so it wont look like crap after that first snow storm.

maybe you need to pay attention more!

Anyway, the grill thing is easy (yes I had one at some point, but it came off in my July '03 crash, and I never bothered to replace it) I had mine held on by just the foglights. And I don't like how the middle piece fits. the bumper is too messed up in the back for it to look right, IMO. Look in the bottom corners of Redog's middle grill piece to see what I mean.

I like it. Makes the car look more agressive. Has anyone made an e-manual for the alero that shows the propper way of taking off bumpers, headlights, and all that good stuff?

or am I going to have to shell out the cash?

I used gutterguard on mine. A dremel or tin snips come in handy. I wanted mine at the front of my bumper, and for it to be on real good, so i made a template using cardboard to get the shape with the required angles and curves. once i got this i traced it out on the mesh, then cut around it leaving a 1/2 inch extra to bend backwards with pliers to make a lip that was towards the motor. Slid them in place and screwed them in from behind with a stubby screwdriver. They've been in for 3 years now, and they have lost their shininess so i will be replacing them this spring with some grill i bought that has a flame pattern on it. I may actually just attach the new stuff to the old stuff so it will be on the front of the bumper again.

That's why I only handwash my baby... She will never see a touchless carwash.

Maybe no need to paint, I bought and installed black gutterguard mesh.

ya, they have black gutter guard but its plastic. if you wanna attach it from behind you can use the plastic stuff, but if you want it flush with the front of the bumper like i mentioned i did mine, I think you'll need the metal stuff. heres a picture of how mine turned out.

i'm still debating as to wether i should paint mine black or leave it silver. i think rustoleum or that krylon fusion paint w/ some clear coat would be nice.

(i'd clear coat the plain silver mesh anyway, just for some added protection)

if you paint it, it will prolly chip off. If you want it black go with the plastic gutterguard, you can't tell the difference and you won't have to worry about it oxidizing EVER!!!

how did you get your mesh so flush like that? that is amazing lol

i described how on the first page, basically the insert looks almost like a sardine can before i slide it in the hole, then i screw it in from behind the bumper. Its a little trickier to do then just putting it behind, but i think it actually looks like part of the car instead of just an insert. And it stays in really good to, i hit a couple snow banks and the mesh bent a bit, but it stayed in, come spring i'll just stick a screwdriver through the mesh and pop out the bends, good as new.
