so i went to the exhaust shop, mieneeke in west st paul, and the owner/manager was looking at the car
1) he said 2.5" will not fit, the bends are to sharp. he MIGHT be able to fit 2.25"
2) he said my muffler is to big. its a 5x8 muffler that WITH THE TIPS is a total of 19" long ( i modified the tips to be shorter). the only way it would fit is if the muffler slants way down, because he cant get that sharp of a bend in it. i dont want it to slant down, that will look like crap
the muffler is a magnaflow muffler, its a 1 in, 2 out muffler, strait though. the type that if you were to cut it open is a Y inside, i want to use the factory cutout for a single sided twin tip exhaust.
he recommend getting a muffler with a in and out on the same side, that way i can put it side ways. i already have the muffler and tips, so i want to use this
what do you guys recommend?? i know some of you have custom exhaust thats the same setup as factory....
2001 alero GLS btw

I think the guy is just trying to get you to spend more cash.
Does Meineke mandrel bend pipes or are they crushed?

There's definatly room for 2.5" that's what SLP uses. And if I'm not mistaken FormulaNerd had 2.75" pipe on his.

I believe FormulaNerd said he had 3 inch, in the other muffler thread.
Nope sorry he had a 3 inch Cat.

he's got a pressure bender, like "almost every other exhaust shop" looks like mandrel, but it does shrink
i tried to make some suggestions to the guy, but he wasn't having it, very stubborn dude
he said if he had a mandrel bender he could, but a 2.5" has a 5" radius and he cant go above the suspension with that, a 2.25 he could.

That's basically my old setup, and Scot (Oldsman) has it now. SLP slightly flattens the pipe where it goes through the rear suspension; it's a tight fit. I could never get mine to stop rattling on the heat shield surrounding the fuel tank - the exhaust seemed to shift if I took a corner above 15MPH....I would have none of that.

you guys are correct about mine... 2.75" piping w/ a 3" cat.
he told me 3" wouldnt fit over the "axel", but 2.75 fit....

Mine is full diameter 2.5" all the way back (it's welded around every bend), and whoever at GM (or whoever they paid to do it) that originally installed that exhaust on the Alero had to modify it with a hammer around the swaybar area. It's definately a tight fit, but it's on there and doesn't rattle or anything.

yeah im getting my exhaust work done today and the guy at the shop said the same thing. he said a 40 series flowmaster wont fit cause it will be too long with the tips. im taking it back in at 1pm and he is going to put it up on the rack and take a look to see what exactly will fit. he is being a bitch about the 2.5" pipes too so i will probably have to go with 2.25".

my exhaust is on. the pics are in my showcase thread. i ended up getting 2.25" pipe from the cat back with a 40 series flowmaster and oval ss tip. sounds great and i watched the guy install it, he did a great job i thought. 250 bones out the door.

im going to this other place on thursday that i heard about.
jackal, can you do me a favor? measure how long your setup is, from the back of the shell of the muffler, to the very end of the tip. i know ive got to cut my tips to make them shorter, and your system should give me a idea of the "maximum length" also, does your tip stick out past the bumper? or is it flush when you look down?
also, is yours a center in, center out?
thanks

it sticks out just a bit but it looks good like that. i will get that measurement for ya tomorrow. i know he chopped off quite a bit from the muffler and the tip to make it fit.

ok, i just measured it in the dark and it said 22 inches. if you are looking at it from the rear of the car, im pretty sure it goes in on the right and i know it goes out in the center. it sticks out past the bottom of the bumper just a tad and it is actually pretty close to flush with the middle of the bumper.

Thanks for checking that out, im able to get my setup down to 19.5" on one tip, 20" on the other (i want one to stick out more than the other like factory so it flows with the bumper) so that should work fine, mine is a center in, dual out, so i hope thats not a problem when they go to install it
guess ill hopefully know thursday
