I just got my car back with the a/f gauge installed. The a/f gauge is going crazy. It is jumpping all over the place. Is this normal?

yeah it will go nuts until you go full throttle, then it should go all green. when you first startup in the morning it should be in the yellow for a few seconds.

Is it bad that we have this?

It's not really bad. A wide band O2 sensor will give you a constant reading and not bounce around like mad. The reason for the bouncing, atleast this is how it's been explained to me, is that that computer is constantly making adjustment to the AF/Ratio unless you are at WOT. Mine did the same exact thing.

^ correct

drill a bung for a wideband and youre set

widebands are expensive. normal price for wideband sensor with gauges is $400-$500

Works fine now. Just swaped my cars battery and it's not doing it anymore. Moves around a bit but nothing like before. I'm thinking my problem was my computer. Think all it needed was a reboot :).

must be running Windows??

Any fuel injected car will do that

Do you have a stock PCM?

the problem is not that the PCM is constantly compensating for various A/F mixtures; this is what the PCM/ECU is supposed to do. the issue is simply that the NB EGO sensor simply is not as sensitive a a WB EGO sensor. To put it in a nutshell its like having a guage that measures in 100s ( the NB sensor) and one the measures in ones (the WB sensor) they just have a difference in the precision that they measure to.

Why drill a new bung when the NB bung should work just fine??

SWEET FREAKIN CRIPES PEOPLE, its supposed to be bouncing. You folks must be ricers for putting in these guages and having abso-freakin-lutely NO CLUE what to expect from them, or how to read them (or in this case - whats needed to derive an accurate reading from them)

Anyhow, for those of us that HAVE installed these and have got them working, which wire did you tap off the O2 sensor to get the signal? Was it the Purple one?

Molson

yep, it was for me in the 2.4

Chillout SS. I got mine from SmokinAMD USED along with 2 other guages that i REALLY wanted so you better back your riceblastin a$$ up and take a good deep breath of that fresh up north air and cool down. I got a pigtail with mine that connects between the sensor and the PCM, and a purple wire just comes out of it to hook up to my guage to. It's actuaaly really distracting and if i can't figure out a way to stabalize it then i'm gonna get a different guage.

Only Riceblastin I'll be doin is SPOOLING by your car, you know the one - the car with all those blinky jumpy distracting guage lite thingys on your pillar? (heaven forbid you should learn what they do... )

Oh thats right (for those of you who havent boarded the Mechanical ShortBus) I said Spooling and you know what that means

Wow, want a cookie?

Hey Turtle, you can't have it calm down, unless you get a wideband o2 sensor, thats just the way it is. As long as when its bouncing, it remains mostly in the Stoich. area you're fine. Under heavy loading it should go into rich, and on a throttle off it will go lean for a couple seconds then even out again.

Yeah, I connected it to the purple wire that is in the wire bundle that goes between the firewall and the back of the motor. It is on the driver's side.
