i did a search for "tire diameter" and found a bunch of. . . nothing. . .
so im asking
basically, i'm not interested in going and bigger or smaller as far as tire diameter. . . i want to go wiht a bigger wheel and lower profile tire.
the wheels i want thus far are the american eagle 193 series (i think) 16x7 5x110/115
soo... assuming i get those wheels at a cost of about $530 shipped, what can i get as far as tires thatll keep my overall tire diameter pretty close?
side-questions:
how big are the stock alero wheels? i measures from the center out and got 8 inches. . . x2 = 16? NO WAY...
what IS the overall diameter? i'm upstairs about to pass out. . . im not going downstairs with a tape measure (err. . . to try to find one) so measure the tires...
on quite a few cars here it looks like a drop has been added. . . has one? where can i get it and how much (of a drop/does it cost)
thanks

why would you pay that much for 16's?

...
right now i'm about to passs out and wake up with marks from each of the keys in my keyboard in my face...
i don't know. . .
are the stock wheels really 16s? if so, can i keep the stock overall diameter w/ 17s or 18s? also, i think it was $485+ shipping for the 17s. . . coul find the 16s on the site i was at. . . man im tired...

dude, do 18s..got mine for 630 shipped, and they were chrome..so i'm sure if you look really hard on ebay, you will find some good pairs..i know later you will want bigger wheels..

factory tire diameter is 25"
so this is the diameter you want to stay around.

stock wheels were either 15's or 16's depending on what model and package you got.
FYI 27" is max diameter for the front

Hey Duece. I dunno if you've already found this, but I was surprised that noone mentioned this already....CLICK HERE (http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html) for a handy little tool for configuring your tire/rim combo. FYI: I dunno what the stock tire size is on a 16" stock wheel setup, but the 15's come with 215 /60R /15's. ( Being that your car is a GX, I'd assume your stock wheels are 15" )
Hope this helps.

I'll give something to go on with that site
Alero sizing
215/60/15 = 225/50/16 = 225/45/17 = 225/40/18
On most cars everything changes by 10 points but the Alero max recommened width is 225mm and 17 inch wheels are an odd size on "N" bodies

(again up too last to comprehend much of anything posted)
so to keep the overall 25 inch diameter, i want 17s with a 54 series tire or 18s with a 40 series tire?
225mm is max reccomended width. . . can i safely and "un gaudily"(?) go wider?
i didnt know 16s were so small looking HAHA
guess i'll look forward to 17s or 18s. . .
anybody got any side-by-side comparison pictures i can take a look at?
thanks alot

i'm running 235/40/17's front and rear now, and i want to go 245/40/17's in the back, but i'm afraid i'll rub the strut spring mount.

then i can safely go 235 width?
what about backspacing at that width? i'd kill myself if i had a car with the wheels sticking out 4 inches from the body. . . (yeah, i'm overexemplifying... but the point is clear)
EDIT:
oh... jabartram...
in your signature picture, are those the 235/40/17 wheels? if so, got a bigger picture i can see? ive got an 01 2dr in i think the same color. . . those wheels even look a little liek the ones i had my eye on...

go 18's I got 17s at first, and now I am trying to sell them so I can get 18's
And Redog, it is possible to use 235/40/18 but 225/40/18 is the recommended depending on if you get a 18x8 or 18x7.5
And Duece, 225/40/17 isn't the wheel size, it's the tire size
225 = width (more or less)
40 = Profile (in I think milimeters)
17= size of rim it will fit on, or diameter of the bead of the tire
And get a quote from american racing, and than to go discount tire company, they sell american racing rims, and I bet you will get it a lot cheaper, with a better warranty on the tires, and installation and crap. You will save money
As for the rims sticking out 4 inches, as long as teh offset on the wheel is between +36 and +45 you will be fine

i appreciate all the help yall have already given... keep it coming if you can! got a few job applications to turn in tomorrow... gotta start savin up for some wheels/tires...

The profile is a percentage, so in that case the profile is 40% of 225mm which is 90mm

something to consider: if your town has a lot of unavoidable potholes, don't do 18's. you'll get plenty of curb rash easily. (hell, I get plenty of rash from potholes here and I have 16's)
but if it's totally a show car and not a daily driver, look for some 19's.
