Pix further down but my camera's a piece of SpHoIoTp...
What I did was furk up my on my first try of painting this trim. Since no one really has any to get rid of (I still may need/want a new piece, tho) I figured I'd go ahead and try to salvage the trim I messed up on.
It wasn't a really bad mess up, but I was hesitant to sand down on the piece with the icons around the HVAC knobs. (I ended up slicing it up pretty bad because I'm just stupid sometimes) I found some 220 sand paper in the garage, tho, so I decided to give sanding a shot. It seems to have worked pretty well...
There is no clear coat on here yet, and it still needs another layer of paint, but you get the jist. I also ended up removing areas of the white icons during the sanding, so I just scraped it all off with an exacto. I like the blue better anyway.
When finished this piece of trim will be silver in the HVAC area and 1/3 inch around the perimeter, and the inner area below the HVAC and around the radio will be metal-flake red to match the outside of the car.

^ Look up... lol
I couldn't get the pics to load, so I had to throw em in Cardomain.
Oh, and I will most likely do the HVAC knobs and buttons silver as well.
AND........ the buttons on my stock radio are peeling..... anyone else have this happen? Well, I'm either gonna paint the radio all silver as well, or I'm gonna paint it silver and clear the black paint off the buttons and coat them with Tester's Transparent Blue and hand-paint the #s back on (this would be a silver radio with transparent blue butons). Any suggestions?

I think that would look good, are you going to paint any thing else
smlzalero
03-27-2005, 11:58 AM
Yeah. I've got all the other trim on the dash painted silver, waiting for clear coats. I've done the handle pieces for all 4 doors... but I'm not sure if I wanna do the corner pieces around the tweeters, not sure about the e brake, or certain other trim on the doors like around the door locks on the dr door, etc...

VCguy, I like it.
Now, what silver is that? It looks chromey... or like aluminum, kinda. I used 'metallic silver' and when i clear coated over it.........it looks gray. yucky... watch out for that, make sure you test it on somethin else, first.

very nice both of you...i'll post up some new pics of mine when i'm done again. I tore my whole car apart last night, three weeks and i'm already changing my cr*p around.
VCguy85
03-29-2005, 06:27 AM
yeah it is a mettalic paint. the only problem i face with it now is since theres no clear coat over it, i can touch it and get a silver dust on my hand, (thats why you can see finger prints in the pics)

I used a brush that i shouldn't have used since the Tester's dries WAY faster than artist's oils. :glare: I'm a dumbass.
You could use a cheap synthetic brush from Hobby Lobby.
jwth2005
04-04-2005, 02:29 AM
How wide does the brush need to be. And what about the transparent stuff??
smlzalero
04-04-2005, 02:34 AM
My brush was prolly between 1/8 & 1/4 inch wide, flat brush. I also used a 5/0 Royal Gold (fine detail brush)
Before you paint around the icons, use an exacto blade and GENTLY scrape the white coating off (the plastic is blue underneath). Then paint around the icons, then you can go back in with the blade and scrape off any paint you may get in there.
